Part 3

KNOCK KNOCK

“Just a second!” Colleen called out as she stuffed her struggling bound and gagged roommate into the closet. Dani did her best to scream and make enough noise, but there was no more knocking as Colleen successfully shut her closet doors in Dani’s face.

She just hoped that didn’t mean the person at the door had heard Dani’s muffled screams and gone to get help.

No, Colleen told herself as she made her way to the front door. That was silly. Even if this person had heard Dani there was no way they would have figured out what was going on just from that. This person had to be here for something else. They had to be!

Colleen made it to the front door and opened it to find… oh, great. This was just what she needed.

Sonia Vaughn was one of Colleen’s English professors. She was a somewhat plump woman a little bit taller than Colleen with neatly arranged short blonde hair. Today she was wearing jeans, low-heeled boots for the winter, and a puffy looking black jacket with a faux fur-lined hood.

“Hello Colleen,” she said with a friendly, yet somehow restrained smile. “I’ve been trying to get ahold of you all day, but you haven’t been responding to my texts or calls. Is everything all right?”

“I… uh…” This was surreal. Colleen had been expecting a neighbor, maybe one of her or Dani’s friends, or even Dani’s date, but her teacher? The flirty one she always thought was maybe a bit too interested in touching her shoulder? Okay, maybe it wasn’t that much of a surprise, but still.

Thump.

Oh, great. Dani was making noise again. Colleen had to get the teacher out of here. Fast. She shook her head, trying to focus. “What are you doing here, Professor Vaughn?”

There was that smile again. “Well, you left your notebook behind on Friday. I’ve been trying to reach you about it, but you never answered any of my messages.” She pulled a notebook out of her jacket. Colleen didn’t recognize it.

“That’s not my notebook.”

Thumpthumpthump.

The professor frowned. “Yes it is. It was on the floor next to your seat. I contacted Laura and it wasn’t hers, so it must be yours.”

THUMP THUMP

Jesus, how was this woman not hearing that noise?

“I don’t know what to tell you, that’s not my notebook. Did you look inside of it?”

Professor Vaughn scoffed. “Did I look inside of it? Are you really asking me if I didn’t bother to check the inside of the notebook before I went out of my way to drive to a student’s apartment and deliver it?”

Colleen didn’t know what to say when she paused, letting her words hang awkwardly in the air. She was about to respond with a simple ‘what?’ when the teacher beat her to it.

“Because I think… I actually did forget to check inside.” She gave Colleen an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry, let me just take a look here…”

Colleen sighed, not quite believing this ridiculous sitcom bullshit was actually happening. She crossed her arms as the older woman fumbled with opening up the notebook in her winter gloves.

Suddenly an arm wrapped itself tightly around Colleen’s stomach at the same time a hand came to rest over her mouth. Colleen was wrenched off her feet and away to the door. Her legs flew into the air only to end up in the grip of a man dressed in all dark clothing, who took hold of her lower limbs before she could start flailing with them.

“MMMPH! MMMMMPH!” Colleen cried out as she was carried deeper into her own home. She had just enough time to see her professor step inside and shut the door before she was wrestled down onto the couch.

“Sorry about this honey,” came Vaughn’s voice over the sound of Colleen’s struggles. One of the men, the one holding her mouth shut, was putting enough wait on her back to keep her from getting away. The other sat down on her legs. And all the while, Vaughn kept talking.

“I’ve been trying to do this the nice way all semester, but you just wouldn't take a hint!”

She paused long enough for the men to grab Colleen’s wrists, pull them back and–

Click

“WHHHM EEE UUUGH?!” Coleen demanded as the cool metal of what had to be handcuffs were locked around her wrists.

Vaughn kept going as if she hadn’t made a sound. “I mean, really! I thought I was laying it on pretty thick, but you would not bite! Fortunately, these gentlemen here were willing to help me out. I do some work with them a few times a year and I called in a favor. So you’ll be coming home with me!”

“Wwhm ee uugh aagh oou aaallghng aaaooough?!?” Colleen had no idea what the hell this crazy woman was talking about. None! But she knew she didn’t like it, so she did her very best to struggle against these psychos attacking her. Too bad there was nothing she could do. Within another few seconds her legs were forced together and another pair of cuffs were slapped onto her ankles.

“MMMMMPH!”

And Vaughn was still prattling on!

“I was planning to make a move after the semester was over, but they cried ‘scheduling conflicts’ and here we are a few weeks early. That’s okay though. The police won’t find you in my basement.”

“MMMPH!?!”

“We have a lot on our plates, Sonia,” said one of the men. The one on top of Colleen’s legs. “We weren’t trying to weasel out of helping you. After today we genuinely can not help until the end of January.”

“Oh, don’t give me that. And what was up with all that noise you were making? You kept stomping your way into the house. I’m amazed she didn’t turn around to see what was making all that racket!”

“That wasn’t us.”

“What do you mean that wasn’t–?”

As if in answer, Colleen’s door burst open and Dani thudded into the hallway with a loud cry. She was resplendent in her duct tape covered limbs, haphazardly messed up clothes, and sweaty read face. “MMMMMMPH! EEEELLLGH EEE!”

Colleen, Vaughn, and her two partners all turned in that direction as one. For her part, Dani stopped short at the strange sight in front of her. Whatever she’d been hoping to find, she certainly hadn’t expected to see three people in the process of restraining her captor.

The frozen moment ended when Dani blinked, sagged to the floor, and sighed.

“Aangh ooou,” she said. It sounded suspiciously like a ‘thank you.’ Dani then launched into a longer, more garbled sentence with longer words. She thought these people were coming to rescue her.

“Huh,” said one of the men. “I was not expecting one of our targets to be taken care of when we got here.”

Dani blinked again. “Aargeghs?”
