Kiana, still drowsy from waking up early, walked into her new Sociology class. She was still adjusting to the new semester’s schedule. Figuring out how to fit enough sleep in was tougher than she thought it would be, and it didn’t help that she wasn’t too interested in sociology. She was a journalism major. Knowing about sociology might help her, but it wasn’t a focus.
The sight that greeted Kiana when she stepped into the room finished waking her up.
Standing at the head of the room was Kiana’s friend Jodie. They hadn’t seen each other since last semester when they exposed Councilwoman Brockton’s drug smuggling operation. Jodie the tomboy—who Kiana never saw in anything but jeans, sneakers, and her favorite worn-out jacket—wearing a tight pencil skirt, four-inch heels, and a nice blouse. Her brown hair was neatly combed instead of loose and messy. She even had on makeup, and stockings. Kiana never saw Jodie use makeup. Or stockings!
Kiana took a startled step back. She might have felt a little self-conscious. The Filipina student’s eyes had wandered before, but Jodie apparently cleaned up well. She was an athletic girl with a great figure. Kiana was no slouch in the looks department herself. She exercised and took care of her appearance. But the shorter, twenty-year-old Filipina girl felt distinctly underdressed in her jeans, running shoes, and university shirt.
“Hello Kiana,” said Jodie with glossy eyes and an oddly flat tone. “Please take your seat. Professor Leoda will be in shortly.”
Kiana moved in a daze, almost tripping over a backpack before taking a seat next to a blonde girl she didn’t know. It was her who snapped Kiana out of it with a nudge to the shoulder.
“First time in one of Professor Leoda’s classes?”
Kiana blinked herself back into focus. “What? Oh, yeah. I’ve heard the rumors…” Leoda’s high standards for her teaching assistants—the dress code, the deference, all of it—made their way around campus. Most of it was whispers and rumors, but Kiana was a budding journalist and always on the lookout for a story.
“But seeing it for yourself is different. Believe me, I know. A friend of mine was her assistant a year or two ago. I barely recognized her.”
Kiana frowned. Her shock had worn off. It was time to ask questions. That glossy look in Jodie’s eyes wasn’t normal. This was more than a dress code and high standards of behavior. This was a story.
“Do you think I could talk to your friend?”
The blonde shook her head. “No, she transferred. Leoda’s TAs always find good internships and study abroad programs. She’s got connections. I don’t think I’ve ever seen one last more than a semester. It’s like they disappear.”
Connections? Kiana was about to ask more when the door opened and the teacher in question made her entrance.
Professor Leoda swept into the room. She was a tall black woman wearing a colorful dress. Her hair was drawn into a bun at the base of her neck. She spoke a few quiet words to Jodie, who replied with a polite nod (practically a bow!) before stepping aside.
“Good morning, class,” Leoda smiled as she took her place at the front of the room. “I’m looking forward to getting to know you all this semester. But first we need to get the syllabus out of the way, so let’s dive right in.”
There were a couple of scattered chuckles, but Kiana’s focus was on Jodie sitting primly near the exit with hands in her lap, as if waiting for further direction. She looked proper, respectful, and utterly unlike Jodie.
Kiana turned her attention back to Professor Leoda, who was reading from a sheet of paper, oblivious to the younger woman’s suspicion.
Something was off, and Kiana was going to get to the bottom of it.
Three Weeks Later
“Excuse me, Professor Leoda?” Kiana asked after class one Friday. “I was wondering if you could help me with something.”
After three weeks of digging, Kiana had found almost nothing unusual about Professor Leoda. Her house was bigger and nicer than a thirty-one-year-old college professor should have been able to afford, but Leoda was open about being from a wealthy family in Haiti that helped her out financially.
There had also been that strange day in class when Leoda asked for volunteers to give her a lock of their hair, but that had tied in with the day’s lesson about the supposedly “magical” occult practices of certain social groups. Voodoo, Shamanism, Wicca, that sort of thing.
Kiana volunteered. She thought it would help her make a favorable impression. Plus, she’d been meaning to get a haircut anyway.
There was nothing to be found about the missing teaching assistants either. Kiana found names. Tina Marks, Beth Carson, Sylvia Donner, and other female students. But all deleted their social media accounts upon becoming Leoda’s assistants, and Kiana couldn’t find any of their phone numbers after they supposedly left the University for “internships” and “study abroad programs.”
Something kept on nagging at the back of Kiana’s head. A suspicion. Rumors and whispers of a criminal wanted by the FBI whose illegal activities revolved around college-aged, strangely over-obedient women.
It seemed ridiculous to suspect a college professor Kiana knew in her personal life might coincidentally be the infamous “Doll Maker.” Yet what little was known about the wanted criminal seemed to match Leoda.
The Doll Maker operated on the East Coast. She was known to be a woman and believed to be from a Caribbean or Latin American nation. Her suspected clientele was high class. Witnesses described her “Dolls” as extremely docile in a way that reminded Kiana too much of Jodie’s recent behavior.
Kiana hoped she was seeing things that weren’t there. Paranoia was better than running into someone the Feds were actively hunting for. But she couldn’t know for sure. And with traditional legwork getting her nowhere, Kiana decided to approach Leoda directly.
The Sociology teacher looked up from the homework assignments Jodie had collected for her and smiled. When she spoke, it was with a faint Haitian accent. “Of course, Kiana, what do you need?”
The smile had an impact on Kiana. She couldn’t help it. Despite her suspicions, Professor Leoda made an impression. The woman looked good and carried herself with confidence. Today she wore a cream-colored sleeveless sweater top that showed off her muscular arms, stood out nicely against her dark skin, and went well with her loose, tan pants. It was an attractive ensemble.
“I have an assignment for one of my other classes to interview a member of the University’s faculty,” Kiana said, carefully not facing Jodie as she spoke. It was difficult for Kiana to see her rough-and-tumble friend like this.
Jodie’s outfit today was typical of the new Jodie, but incredibly strange in one way: it matched Leoda’s. A light turtleneck with tan calf high-heeled knee boots and a matching miniskirt. Somehow Kiana doubted it was Jodie’s idea to color coordinate like that.
“And you want to interview me? I’d be delighted!”
“Oh, uh, thank you!” Kiana was caught off guard by the exuberant answer.
“Don’t mention it! I love when my students approach me about things like this. They rarely come to me for help with my own classes, much less for assignments in others.”
Kiana smiled politely. “When we got the assignment about interviewing faculty members, most of my classmates went to more established teachers, people who have been part of the system longer. I thought it would be most interesting to ask someone with a fresher look at the University.”
“Smart girl,” Leoda turned to Jodie. “Judith, when is the soonest time I’ll be available to be interviewed by Kiana?”
“Now, ma’am,” Jodie replied in monotone. She had no reaction to hearing her full first name, which Kiana knew she hated. “You have several hours before your next class and no office hours today. Your schedule is otherwise full for several weeks.”
“Very well, then. Let’s head out and we can get started.” Without waiting, Leoda grabbed her large bag, swept on her coat, and walked toward the door with the clear expectation that both younger women follow. Jodie moved instantly; no doubt used to sudden exits like this. Kiana froze for a second before following along herself.
“Um, where are we going?” Kiana asked when she caught up. How the heck did they walk so fast in those heels?
“To my home. I may be free tonight, but I need to feed my pets. They’re on a strict feeding schedule. Besides, won’t it be better to interview me somewhere we won’t be interrupted?”
Kiana’s mind raced. She should say no. She absolutely should not be following someone as suspicious as Leoda to anywhere private. Especially on the off chance Leoda really was the Doll Maker. Kiana knew that.
Then again… Kiana did have her phone. She hadn’t told her roommate Sarah about her suspicions, but Sarah did know to call for help if she went too long without hearing from Kiana. The Journalism Major had an unfortunate habit of getting into trouble, and Sarah knew that better than anyone except maybe Detective Carly Vang, who often checked in on Kiana herself. Between the two of them, the authorities would be alerted if Kiana disappeared with no explanation for too long.
Besides, if this interview didn’t go well Kiana was probably going to have to break into Leoda’s home herself. It might be helpful to get a look at it in advance.
“That sounds great,” she said. They made it to the main doors and left the building. As they walked, they proceeded to chat about class. Kiana took the time to ask some preliminary questions. She hadn’t made up the interview assignment. It was real, and if Leoda wasn’t the Doll Maker she could still get a good grade.
Soon they made it to the staff parking lot. “We’ll take my car,” said Leoda when they reached a silver Lexus. “It’ll be faster than taking more than one, and we can drop you off afterwards.”
Kiana was about to give another polite thanks only to stop short when Jodie opened her door for her.
“I-uh… thanks,” she carefully put herself in the proffered car seat. It was the backseat of the passenger side. Jodie didn’t reply. Kiana stared as her friend moved to the other side of the car to hold Leoda’s door open as well. The professor slid into the seat next to Kiana.
“Isn’t she wonderful?” Leoda asked when Jodie was in the driver’s seat, starting the car. “I’m sure you can guess how difficult she was when I first got my hands on her. So rude! But after three months with me she’s much better behaved, aren’t you pet?”
“Yes ma’am,” Jodie intoned. She punctuated her words by locking the car. The sound was impossibly loud. Kiana was suddenly very aware of the fact that the windows were tinted, impossible to see through from the outside.
This was insane. Kiana knew getting into the car was risky, but she never expected Leoda to act so quickly. They hadn’t even left the parking lot!
She hadn’t expected Jodie to help, either.
Desperate to keep that realization off her face, Kiana played dumb.
“I don’t—what are you talking about?”
“Now now, Kiana,” Leoda was digging around in her bag as she spoke. Her tone changed. The friendly teacher was gone and in her place was someone sinister. “Let’s not pretend. We know the real reason you want to ‘interview’ me. Did you think I didn’t notice the way you’ve been staring at Judith and I in class? Or all the ‘investigating’ you’ve been doing? I know your reputation for snooping,”
Kiana stopped playing dumb and went for her phone. The car was already moving. Kiana had to text Sarah. She didn’t have to say who she was with, she only had to send her a single “s.” That was their code for S.O.S. Send help.
“Oh no no no, don’t do that.” Leoda’s hand was still in her bag as Kiana ripped her phone out of her pocket. Kiana had just enough time to open her texts when, somehow, she dropped it.
Kiana blinked. What the hell? Her hand had simply opened up and let the phone drop. A second later, her wrists were wrenched backwards. Nothing was touching them. Some impossible, invisible force had grabbed hold of Kiana’s arms and forced them to move. Her wrists met behind her back, smushing them against her seat. She tried to pull them apart, but it was as though they were tied together. Kiana had been tied up before, she knew what it felt like.
Turning to Leoda, Kiana tried to demand answers. But when she tried to open her mouth her bare lips remained sealed shut. Kiana’s eyes went wide when no words escaped her, only muffled noises. “Mmm mm mph—Mmmmph! MMMMMPH!”
Leoda’s smile was triumphant. She had Kiana right where she wanted her and Kiana had stupidly—willingly!—walked into her trap.
“MMMMMMMMMMMPPH!” Kiana screamed. She was bound and gagged with nothing! Her arms remained firmly together behind her back, her lips refused to open, and it only took a few more seconds of struggling to notice that her ankles were invisibly bound together the same way her wrists were!
On instinct, Kiana tried to open the car door even though she knew it was locked. It was probably the only object other than her backpack she could reach with her hands. When nothing happened, she whipped her head back around to stare at the woman beside her.
“Are you done panicking? Feel free to continue if you’re not. I’m enjoying the show. Although…” Leoda took one hand out of the bag and leaned forward. Kiana shrank away from her arm before realizing that Leoda wasn’t grabbing at her. She was reaching for Kiana’s seatbelt.
“Safety first,” Leoda smirked as she pulled it across Kiana’s chest and buckled it. Then she patted Kiana’s leg. “I won’t let any of my girls get hurt.”
Kiana glared. Her girls?
Seeing the glare and knowing what it meant, Leoda only laughed. “Judith, once we’re home, I want you to cancel all of my appointments until Monday. I have a new toy to play with.”
“Yes ma’am.”
“Mmmm-mmm!” Kiana shook her head and stamped her feet. “Mmm-mmmmph!”
That just amused Leoda more. Her hand reached out again, this time coming to rest on Kiana’s thigh. “Yes, Kiana. I’m afraid so. You’re mine now. Just like Judith. Soon you’ll be as polite, obedient, and—” she cast an amused eye over Kiana’s casual outfit, “—well-dressed as she is.”
Kiana was breathing deep as she tried forcing herself to calm down. She had to keep a level head and stay focused. She’d been in tight spots before, literally. Crime bosses, corrupt police, slavers. You name it, Kiana had dealt with it. She would get out of this one too. Somehow.
If nothing else, she had been right. Leoda had to be the Doll Maker. These abilities of hers, this invisible bondage. It meant she could abduct people and hold them prisoner without any signs of a struggle. That detail alone would make it much harder for authorities to investigate her. There would be no marks or defensive wounds on Kiana’s body, no evidence that she was bound. But how was she doing this? It was almost like she had a Voodoo doll, but that was impossible.
“That’s an interesting look on your face, Kiana. So focused, and I see you trying to move your wrists and ankles too. I bet you’re wondering how I’m keeping you still,” said Leoda. She took her hand away to reach back into her bag and pull out… a doll.
It was a simple doll. Bare-featured, plain, and made out of straw except for a lock of black hair, a couple of little black spots for eyes, and a thin stitch for a mouth. Its arms were wrenched behind its back, its legs together at the ankles, and Leoda was holding one of her left-hand fingers over the spot where its mouth would be.
Kiana sucked in a breath as she realized what she was looking at. The black hair on the straw doll’s head must be hers! It was the lock of hair she’d cut off for that stupid extra credit point!
But… that was impossible. It couldn’t happen! Leoda herself said that they weren’t really a thing in Voodoo like Hollywood said they were!
“You’re so sharp, aren’t you? It usually takes new girls longer to realize what’s going on. They don’t want to admit it’s possible. But I can see you understand. That’s right, this is a Voodoo doll. I make them to help me keep all my girls under control, and now there’s a little you! Say hello!”
Leoda took one of the little doll’s arms and pulled it out in front. Kiana’s corresponding arm instantly did the same, leaving its counterpart behind her back while it went up in front of her face and waved at the doll.
“See?” Leoda put Kiana’s arm behind her again. “With this I can make you do whatever I want you to. In fact, let’s have you hand that phone over to me.”
It happened. Manipulating the doll, Leoda made Kiana bend down, pick up her cell phone, and turn it off before dropping it inside of Leoda’s waiting bag.
“You really should be more careful with the batteries on these things,” she mocked. “Isn’t it such trouble when they die on you?”
“Screw you,” said Kiana. Then she froze, surprised. Leoda had taken her finger off the voodoo doll’s mouth.
“I can’t hold my hand there forever, can I?” There was laughter in Leoda’s eyes. Kiana didn’t want to respond. The older woman was playing with her. But this might be her only chance to get her to talk. Kiana couldn’t afford to lose that opportunity.
“You’re the Doll Maker,” she accused.
Now it was Leoda’s turn to be surprised. Her eyes went wide, and she leaned back. She recovered quickly, smiling as she did, but she clearly hadn’t expected to hear that name. “My my, you have done your homework, haven’t you?
Kiana snorted. “I obviously didn’t do it well enough, since I got in the car with you.” She tested the ‘bonds’ at her wrists and ankles. They didn’t move.
“Don’t be so hard on yourself. It isn’t your fault you were unprepared for my powers. You were careful. I’m sure you were going to text some little friend of yours if I’d given you the chance. Your roommate, yes? Sarah Evers? That’s who Judith tells me you share all of your ‘extra-curricular’ activities with.”
Kiana fought to hold her poker face at the mention of Sarah.
“I figured you’d end up in my care sooner or later. Ever since that first article about the smugglers downtown in your freshman year. You’re a nosy little snoop, always getting into more trouble than you can handle. But you won’t get away from me. And don’t worry about your roommate. I’ll be dispatching some of my other girls to take care of her later.”
She paused, waiting for a reaction. Kiana felt her jaw tighten, her eyes narrow, and her brow scrunch in fury. Still, she said nothing.
“Don’t want to talk anymore? That’s okay. We’ll have plenty to discuss later.” Leoda pulled out a roll of silver duct tape out of her bag and ripped off a tiny piece of it, just large enough to fit smoothly over the doll’s little mouth.
“Wait, you don’t nee—aaammmph, mmmmph!”
“There we go, nice and quiet as a good girl should be.” She reached out again. This time her hand found Kiana’s side. “Hmmm, such a baggy old sweatshirt. No one can see your firm, sexy body when you wear this.”
“Mmmph!” Kiana tried to squirm away from her. It was futile. There wasn’t enough space in the car to pull away from the older woman’s touch before she pressed up against the door. It still felt good to try. And… Kiana hated admitting it to herself, but part of her was responding to being felt up by the Haitian woman.
Leoda chuckled. “No no Kiana. There’s no getting away from me now.”
With the doll in her hands, Leoda made Kiana come closer to her. There was no resisting the doll’s power. Kiana’s body simply moved. She scooched from the door, her back went ramrod straight as she bent at the waist closer to her captor and her head tilted up to look at her. Kiana realized what was happening an instant before Leoda’s lips found hers.
“MMMPH!” was all Kiana could get out as Leoda forcibly kissed her. It was a hard kiss, telling Kiana in no uncertain terms who was in charge. It lasted for at least a minute. Leoda grabbed Kiana’s chin to hold her steady and it kept it there when she was finished. Then she leaned back and simply looked at Kiana. Inspected her like a piece of meat. Kiana glared back.
The car ride progressed much like that, with Leoda taunting Kiana and using her doll-given power over her to play. She made Kiana scrunch up into a ball, had her put her arms high above her head, and a dozen other small things until Jodie announced their arrival. Kiana looked out to see the expensive house she’d checked out just a few days ago. It was large, ornate, and side-by-side with an expansive garage Jodie parked in.
“Now the real fun can begin.” Leoda trailed the back of her hand down a grimacing Kiana’s cheek until Jodie was opening the car door for her.
The garage door finished shutting when Jodie stepped around the car to let Kiana out as well. No one could look in and see what was happening, which meant there was no one to see Kiana tumble out of the car and land on her hands.
“MMMPH?!” Kiana cried out in shock.
“Amazing!” Came Leoda’s voice from the other side of the car. “I had no idea you could walk on your hands, Kiana. That’s so impressive!”
Kiana couldn’t see the woman and her Voodoo doll at all. She couldn’t see anything but the bottom of the car and Jodie’s tan boots right next to her face. It was hard to focus on anything but her own hands on the dirty cement ground and watch as they began moving of their own volition, carrying her through the overly large garage.
Jodie parked in the farthest stall from the house, so Kiana had a long way to travel. She did her best to take in as many details of her surroundings as she could. There were two more cars in the garage, a sleek black one and a much less expensive looking blue one. She passed Leoda, glimpsing her nice shoes beneath the loose pants, and tried to glare up at her. The Doll Maker was holding her voodoo doll upside down, showing Kiana just how she was managing this walk.
Her arms burned. Magic or no magic, Kiana’s muscles were unused to this kind of use. She hadn’t stretched or prepared them in any way. They naturally protested at their impossible motions.
“My girls just never know what they’re capable of until I get my hands on them,” she heard Leoda abruptly say when she wasn’t far from the door. As she spoke, one of Kiana’s hands lifted away from the ground, leaving her balanced on just one.
“MMMMMPH! Meeeaaazgh eeeg eee ooough!” Kiana begged to be let up. Begged. Kiana never begged her captors. But none of her captors ever used magic. Kiana was starting to understand just how thoroughly under Leoda’s power she was.
Steadily, Kiana felt herself lowered back to a right-side up position. She was on her feet again, breathing a sigh of relief. It caught in her throat when she turned around just in time to see Leoda make the doll do a flip in her hands.
Kiana blinked.
The most athletic thing the Filipina woman had ever done in her life was a 10k run. She was not physically capable of doing a backflip and could only feel pure shock when body did just that. With no preparation, training, or the required muscle mass, Kiana performed a backflip. The world spun until Kiana found herself back on her feet. She’d stuck the landing.
She stood there, stunned, barely noticing Leoda and Jodie’s clicking heels announcing their movement until they were standing in front of her. Kiana saw Leoda’s grin and glossy-eyed Jodie at her side. Kiana was now terrified she would be sporting that same vacant look before all this was done.
“You’re a smart girl, Kiana,” Leoda stood feet away, too far for Kiana’s arms to grab the doll from her casual grip. She drew closer a moment later when she forced Kiana’s wrists back together behind her back. “Now that you’ve seen some of what I’m capable of, do I really need to force you to walk for me?”
Leoda removed the tape from the doll’s face. Kiana could talk again. She swallowed.
“No. I-I’ll walk on my own.” Kiana’s face grew hot as her indignation caught up with her fear. She couldn’t believe she was doing this.
“Good girl. Judith?”
Jodie was already moving. Her booted heels clicked on the ground as she went to hold open the house door. Watching her friend continue to act like a mindless servant burned as much as Kiana’s protesting muscles. Her teeth grit, her shaking steadied, and she pulled at the invisible bonds holding her wrists.
She couldn’t ignore the fear, but she could embrace the anger. Magic or no magic, Leoda wasn’t going to get away with this.
Kiana was led into the house. Neither Leoda or Jodie touched her, and she was allowed to walk under her own power. It was mortifying for Kiana to realize how much the notion that she was being allowed to walk with her own legs relieved her. But her arms were still magically bound behind her back, making it impossible to ignore the reality of Leoda’s powers.
Leoda’s house was every bit as nice on the inside as it was on the outside. Kiana took note of every detail she could remember as she was hustled through the entrance hallway and to a destination she didn’t know.
She could hear footsteps in other rooms. Above her head, off to the side. More of Leoda’s captive girls, no doubt. Kiana saw no one else, but she knew they must be here. Leoda said as much herself.
There were two or three more dolls too. All with the same fuzzy black hair, positioned in corners or places with good views of the hallways and rooms. Kiana guessed the hair on their heads belonged to Leoda, but why would she make Voodoo dolls of herself? Did they function as security guards or cameras?
They didn’t travel far before Jodie opened another door and Kiana was hustled down a set of stairs into the basement. Kiana’s breathing grew ragged as she descended behind Jodie and in front of Leoda. It was a nice basement. The stairs were as richly carpeted as the actual floor once they got down. That didn’t make it any less of a dungeon. Now that Kiana was down there, she had no idea when she might come back up.
No! Kiana couldn’t let herself think like that. She would be up soon. By the end of the day! She would!
The three women came to their destination, a room that was almost comfortable. There were nice plush chairs, some beautiful decorative pieces on the walls, and even an artificial fireplace humming with gentle warmth. Kiana might have been impressed if she wasn’t a prisoner.
“My sitting room,” Leoda said as she finally stepped past Kiana to sit down in one of the chairs. She set her bag aside after pulling Kiana's Voodoo doll out and resting it on her lap like a sorcerous mall Santa. “I have another one upstairs to unwind in after a busy day, but this is where I like to get to know my toys. Stand over there.”
It took Kiana a second to register the command before she moved to stand in the indicated space before Leoda. That plush chair was looking more and more like a throne. And beside it was something Kiana missed from the doorway. A little plastic… tub? And there were towels folded neatly next to it.
Jodie shut the door and walked over to her Mistress, whose feet were now resting on the padded stool in front of her. Kiana’s friend knelt directly between Kiana and Leoda (giving Kiana an annoying pleasant view of her skirt-covered rear), then carefully removed Leoda’s shoes. She set them neatly to the side, and leaned in.
Leoda didn’t bother looking at her. Her only acknowledgement of Jodie’s presence at her feet was the pleased hum of someone receiving a massage. Leoda kept her amused eyes firmly on Kiana while the brunette was at her feet attending her. They traveled up and down Kiana’s body, taking in as much of the Filipina girl as her casually baggy clothes showed off.
“What is this?” Kiana finally demanded. She couldn’t take the silence any more. “Are you just here to make me watch her rub your feet?”
“No dear,” Leoda laughed. “I was only enjoying the moment. Now strip.”
She said it so casually. Kiana took an instinctive step back. Her arms shifted. She wanted to cover her chest. Leoda chuckled when she saw Kiana straining her arms and responded by taking one finger and flicking the doll’s limbs apart. Kiana’s wrists came undone.
Kiana did not want to strip. The thought of baring her own skin for this woman was unthinkable. But she knew she couldn’t just say no. She had to stall. Ask questions. Anything. Anything at all to…
As the seconds dragged on, Leoda’s hand drifted back to the doll on her lap. She didn’t touch it, but her fingers were inches away. The warning was clear. Kiana could strip herself, or she could be manipulated into doing it herself, like a puppet.
“If you can just use the doll, why bother telling me to do it?” Kiana demanded. Inwardly, she flinched. Kiana meant to say something more careful, but the sight of Leoda threatening to puppet her body again was just too much and words came tumbling out.
Leoda laughed. “Manipulating the doll so finely is tedious. I would prefer it if you were simply a good girl.”
Kiana glared. She did not want to be a “good girl.” The very thought of obeying the Doll Maker like that made her want to throw up. But Kiana knew that she hated the thought of losing her limbs again even more. Her arms still ached from her handstand walk. She squeezed her eyes shut.
It didn’t matter who was actually moving her hands, she was still being forced to do this.
Quickly, with the jerky motions of someone ripping off a band aide, Kiana pulled off her sweatshirt to reveal her black tank top. That went off next. They fell to the floor in crumpled heaps. Kiana then kicked off her tennis shoes and pulled down her pants. She threw everything aside, wanting to be done with this as quickly as possible. It was all to the music of Jodie massaging her mistress’s feet and Leoda’s little mumbling moans of pleasure.
Kiana’s socks went off last. All that remained was Kiana’s plain panties and bra. The Filipina stood there in her underwear, hands wrapped over her chest, using her glare to dare Leoda to say more.
Leoda didn’t speak. She only raised one elegant brow, communicating her next command very clearly. When Kiana didn’t move to finish stripping, the Haitian woman’s hand resumed its journey towards the doll. She got as far as touching it before Kiana caved, hurriedly ripping off her underwear.
There she stood, naked before her kidnapper. Leoda’s hand continued on without stopping. She snatched the doll’s arms with one hand and forced them together again. Kiana’s wrists once again welded themselves together.
The Filipina student shivered as the Sociology teacher’s gaze wandered, examining the naked body she had no choice but to display. Kiana kept herself in shape. She was short, only a few inches over five feet tall, and had a body built for running and swimming. Her muscles were tight and compact, her breasts firm even without a bra to hold them up.
“That wasn’t a very exciting strip tease.” Leoda’s pleased smile was at odds with her critiquing words. “And your clothes are a mess on the floor. You should have folded them and set them aside neatly. But we’ll have time to work on all that.
“Judith,” Leoda snapped her fingers at the brunette at her feet. “Take care of your friend’s clothes and find her a new outfit. And find Cassandra while you’re upstairs. I want tea.”
Jodie nodded, stood, and shuffled around the room to pick up Kiana’s clothing. Kiana did her best to make eye contact with her. To get her attention or communicate some kind of message. The Filipina could see Leoda’s amusement at her efforts but kept on trying. When her clothes were piled in a heap in Jodie’s arms, the brunette left without ever giving Kiana a second glance.
“Don’t worry about her,” Leoda stood. She took two steps forward to loom over Kiana. Even without her heels she was still at least half a foot taller than the Filipina. Her bare arms reached out, and Kiana found herself being groped. Leoda was purring as she explored Kiana’s body without any clothes in the way. First it was her breasts. Then, quicker than Kiana might have thought, down to her sides and midriff. From there Leoda’s grasping fingers grew rougher as they traveled further along, down to get a tight grip on her ass.
All the while, Kiana squirmed. She even tried to step away, but with her arms bound there was no way to keep Leoda from doing as she wished, grasping and touching and groping to her hearts content. Kiana snarled at her through grit teeth, which just made Leoda laugh.
“You’re so feisty! I’m going to enjoy playing with you.”
Then she leaned down to force another harsh, possessive kiss on the Filipina woman. Kiana yelped, more surprised than angry even though this was the second time it happened. She squirmed harder, even aimed some light kicks at Leoda’s legs. None of it mattered. Leoda kept one firm hand on Kiana’s ass while bringing the other arm up to her back to hold her still while invading her mouth, her tongue darting in and out.
Finally, mercifully, it ended. Leoda was almost gentle as she pulled away. Her hands migrated up to Kiana’s shoulders, one idly toying with her dark hair. Kiana’s face was hot, her breathing ragged as she stared up at her kidnapper, humiliated into silence. Leoda met her gaze with the satisfied look of someone enjoying their time with a new plaything.
“You’re mine now.”
With that, Leoda let go and turned back to her seat. There, for what Kiana knew would be no longer than a small handful of seconds, her eyes were not on her captive. With fear-born adrenaline surging through her body, Kiana took in the sight before her with wide eyes.
She knew, recklessly, that this might be her best chance to get away.
Kiana dashed forward, clipping Leoda with her shoulder as she did. There was a fraction of a second where she heard Leoda’s yelp and was privately triumphant, but there was no time to savor that. This was her only chance. Twisting into a near-dive onto the comfortable chair Leoda sat in minutes before, Kiana grabbed hold of the doll that controlled her body. With fumbling fingers, she felt for the little straw arms that bound—yes! She had them. Kiana gripped the ends of the two limbs and made to rip them apart so she could free her trapped wrists.
Nothing happened.
Kiana blinked, confused. She had the arms, right? It took only a second to hold the doll out to confirm that yes, she held the doll’s arms. But nothing happened when she pulled! Kiana tried with all her strength to rip the doll’s wrists apart and free her own, only for them to remain stubbornly stuck together.
“Nice try,” said Leoda. Kiana looked to find her standing with crossed arms and a smirk. “But that only works for me and whoever I allow to use the doll’s power. That does not include you.”
Kiana stared.
Then she ran.
She held onto the doll while going straight for the door. Even if Leoda was the only person who could use it there was no sense in letting her actually have the damn thing. Kiana kept a tight grip on it with one hand while she reached for the doorknob with the other.
It didn’t budge. The door was locked.
Panting now, her heartbeat raging, Kiana turned back to Leoda. The Haitian woman had sat back down on the chair, utterly unconcerned with Kiana’s escape attempt. With the casual air of someone reaching for the remote, Leoda held out her hand. The voodoo doll was torn from Kiana’s grip and flew through the air back to Leoda’s.
Kiana’s mouth fell open, then she fell to her knees. She yelped as they touched the ground and Leoda chuckled again. She was holding the dolls legs, knees out in front. Kiana watched as she manipulated the limbs to make her crawl until she was in the same position Jodie had been.
“What, Jodie’s massage wasn’t good enough for you?” Kiana snarled. Her eyes were almost even with the older woman’s bare feet.
They’re so clean, was Kiana’s surprising first thought. Because they were. The black woman’s feet were immaculate. The skin was smooth, soft, and well-cared for. Her toenails were perfectly manicured and painted to match her outfit. Kiana wondered if Jodie had been the one to paint them.
“No, Kiana. You’re not going to massage them. You’re going to worship them.”
At first Kiana was confused. Then it came to her. A memory of one of her earlier cases. It was the summer after she graduated high school, before coming to college. She had snuck into an embezzler’s house to look for evidence and ended up hiding in her closet for an hour while the woman watched bondage videos online. Foot worship had been one of many subjects Kiana glimpsed that night.
“I see you know what I mean,” said Leoda. “And here I thought you were more innocent than that.” She leaned back, making herself comfortable while shoving her feet closer to Kiana’s face. “Get started.”
“You can’t be serious,” Kiana tried to glare, but she couldn’t keep her fear out of her eyes or the tremor out of her voice.”
The mirthful light in Leoda’s eyes faded into something harsher. “I am deadly serious, Kiana. I have been lenient up until now because I understand how scary it must be for my girls to begin their new lives. No more. I’ve let you have your little tantrum and now you’re going to obey.”
She held the doll up again. With tortuously slow motions, she placed one finger on the back of its head and carefully pushed it forward. Kiana tried to resist. She squeezed her eyes shut and put forth all her will to keep her head straight and upright. Maybe she even succeeded for a second or two. Kiana hoped she did. But as with every other use of the Voodoo doll, she couldn’t resist forever. Against her will, Kiana felt her body lean forward and her neck crane her mouth closer and closer to her kidnapper’s cute toes.
“Do a good job,” Leoda said when Kiana’s lips were almost touching her toes, “—and I might not punish you for trying to run away.”
The reminder of her futile escape attempt shattered another piece of Kiana’s will to resist. She opened her mouth just in time for Leoda’s toes to enter.
“Mmph,” she grunted at the taste of her kidnapper’s toes. It was mortifying.
“Now suck,” Leoda ordered. “Lick. Do what comes naturally.”
She didn’t say not to bite, Kiana noted. There was nothing stopping her from chomping down hard whenever she wanted to. At this point it seemed like the only thing Kiana could do to resist. To fight back.
Instead, she began to suck. Lightly at first. Hesitantly. Gently. Kiana didn’t quite know what she was doing. A half-remembered video glimpsed from within a closet was her only experience with this. After a little while she began to flick her tongue out much like Leoda had done in her mouth minutes earlier.
“There we go, Kiana. Good girl. Goooood girl.” Leoda began to move her feet, to shift her toes up and down, in and out of Kiana’s mouth. Kiana did her best to find some kind of rhythm to move to. Her efforts were awkward and inexpert, but Leoda seemed to enjoy it. Soon she switched her feet and Kiana started over, this time with a little less hesitance.
To her shock, Kiana found that being forced to worship Leoda’s feet wasn’t that bad. Humiliating, yes. Her cheeks burned red. But the actual act of worshipping her kidnapper’s extremities was… fine. It didn’t even taste bad.
“See? I knew it would come naturally to you,” Leoda mocked. She shifted every few minutes. Soon she had Kiana sucking on her heels, then licking the soles of her feet. A few times she roughly shoved them deep enough into Kiana’s mouth to nearly make her gag.
“This is where you belong, Kiana. At my feet. Serving me. Worshipping your mistress. This is your life now. No more classes and no more getting yourself into trouble snooping around other people’s business. Just service, obedience, and being a good girl.”
Kiana growled a wordless denial, but that only made Leoda laugh more.
At some point the door opened and another girl walked in with a tray. A new girl. She was tall, wearing black lingerie, and had long red hair. Kiana couldn’t see her very well with her head forced into a foot worshipping position, but she was pretty sure she hadn’t seen her before. This wasn’t one of the student Teaching Assistants she researched; it was someone else. Leoda wasn’t only making her Dolls out of students.
“Thank you, Cassandra.” Leoda took a teacup off the tray to enjoy while Kiana continued working at her feet. The redhead remained standing, still as a statue, while Leoda sipped her tea.
Soon after, Jodie came back with an armful of clothes that looked suspiciously like more lingerie, a nightie at most. Kiana let out a little whimper while Jodie moved to stand on the other side of the chair from Cassandra.
Kiana didn’t know how long she was down there for. It was probably only five minutes, maybe closer to ten or fifteen, but time seemed to slow and stretch until it felt like hours. The way Jodie and Cassandra stood so silently didn’t help. They loomed over Kiana, their unnaturally still figures a grim reminder of what was at stake. How long had they been in this doll-like state? Months? How long did it take Leoda to do this to them? And how long would it take her to do it to Kiana?
The Filipina girl squirmed in place as much as she could, straining at her wrists and ankles to separate and her neck to move back. Her invisible bonds held her nearly as still as her fellow captives.
Leoda didn’t even have dolls for them! Why were they still so mindlessly obedient?!
“I think that’s almost enough for now,” said Leoda. She set her teacup back on Cassandra’s tray.
Kiana looked up.
“I wouldn’t say you’ve been a good girl, Kiana. But you have done a good job worshipping my feet for a novice. I think you deserve a treat.”
She had taken something from the tray. A little piece of… candy? Yes, that was it. Leoda unwrapped a piece of chocolate and placed it in the crook of her big toe.
“There we go,” she smiled wide. “Eat up, Kiana. Enjoy your treat. And be sure to get all of it. If you leave a mess on my toes, I’ll be taking it out of your hide.”
Kiana grimaced, but this time she didn’t hesitate or need to be forced to move. She leaned forward on her own and once again enveloped her kidnapper’s toes into her mouth, where the chocolate soon started melting as she licked at it and resumed her gentle sucking.
It was then and there that Kiana accepted she was going to be here for some time.
She wasn’t giving up! Never! Kiana was not a person who gave up.
But she had to face the reality of the situation. Leoda knew what she was doing. She had a system that had been sucking students and other victims in without getting in trouble for years. As far as Kiana knew, she was the only person who had ever cottoned on to the truth.
And she had magic. Impossible abilities that could do seemingly anything with the right tools. Getting away… it wouldn’t be easy. Kiana would do it; she knew that. She had to believe it. But it could take her a much longer time than she was prepared for.
At least the chocolate was good.
