The moment she walked into the bar, it was like the script of a movie playing out. The people nearest the door fell silent and stared, which caused everyone around them to do the same. Slowly, a wave propagated through the audience of the small bar until even the live band fell silent to see what was going on. After a moment’s hesitation - while the woman’s eyes adjusted to the dim lighting everyone drank in her image - she started walking confidently toward the bar.

She made eye contact with the bartender, holding his gaze with a relaxed demeanor. If she knew that everyone in the room was ogling her, she didn’t show it. “Whiskey, please.” Two simple words, filling the air with the velvety tones of her honeyed voice. The bartender scrambled, pained by having to look away from her as he went to fill the order. Gradually, life seemed to return to the bar. The band started to pick up again, albeit shakily at first, while the crowd started to murmur and talk amongst themselves. The spell broke, but no one could ignore the presence of the woman.

I watched this happen from a distance, faintly amused by the behavior of the crowd. Apes, I regarded them, driven by a more basic instinct. For those that saw her beauty and were excited by it, that instinct was a carnal hunger, barely controlled by the guise of being in a public place with so many witnesses. For the rest, their base emotions were that of jealousy and anxiety over the new threat to their own chances of finding a partner tonight. Sure, I found her attractive; she was probably the most beautiful person I had ever actually seen in person. But I wasn’t driven to stupidity like those around her.

It started with drinks being ordered on her behalf. Every bottle of whiskey in that little bar was opened and poured for her, along with many wines and a few beers. Every drink was turned away though, with a sad purchaser holding their rejected offering until they drank it themselves, trying to dull the ache of being turned down by a seeming angel.

Then, they tried to dance with her. People of all types and identities tried to get her to join them on the dancefloor, but she wouldn’t even hold their hands. Somehow, just like the drinks, she turned them down with grace and charm. No one grew angry or agitated, just disheartened at having lost their chance. Eventually, the offers stopped coming, and the woman seemed to look around, a soft frown on her face.

Until she spotted me, at my table off to the side. Apparently, my casual watching of the situation hadn’t gone unnoticed.

The way she glided across the floor was mesmerizing. The crowd parted for her, and she approached me unfettered.

“May I sit here?” There it was, that voice again, but now I had my first up close look at her. It was as though a spell had been cast over me, that I only barely managed to avoid succumbing to its full power. Still though, I took the chance to eye her up and down.

She had long crimson hair, full and voluminous with bouncing curls through its length down to the mid of her back. It was the type of red that shimmered in the light, catching and reflecting it like the shiny surface of a gemstone. In a way, her hair almost seemed to lead the eye to the body of her dress. Strapless, clinging to her curves for the only hope of staying on her frame, the body hugging pencil dress was a deep dark blue that had a long slit along her right leg. Once seeing her dress, there were so many things to look at that it tore your attention in different directions. Perhaps you’d ogle her gravity defying breasts, each the size of her head, that bounced and shook in such a way to clearly demonstrate she was braless? Or maybe it was the long slit that went up to her hip and yet revealed no underwear underneath, but did show off the dark tan hose she was wearing? That of course would lead your attention to the stiletto heels that held her feet nearly vertically.

No matter what part of her body captured the senses, it was her face that had the most refined beauty. Her tanned skin seemed to glow in the warm dim lights of the bar. Her makeup was immaculate, looking edited for a magazine rather than something naturally applied. Her eyes were soft and kind, maintaining a youthful innocence, while her smile carried the confidence of an adult woman.

I realized I hadn’t spoken yet, and cleared my throat into my closed hand. Had it been a brief second, or had I actually been captured by beauty? She giggled, a soft chiming noise that immediately made the entire world seem better, and I couldn’t help but smile back.

“Sure thing, miss.”

“Thank you!” She took the seat beside me after smoothing her dress carefully. Our knees were touching, and such an innocent action seemed unignorable. “My name is Lilly, what’s yours?”

“Uh, Jake. Nice to meet you, Lilly.”

“It’s nice to meet you too. You’re the only one here who gave me space and didn’t try to claim me. How come?”

My throat dried, and my heart stopped. Why was I acting like an idiot now? “Well, it seemed rude to rush up to you like that. I mean, you can choose who you want to be with.”

She smiled, and placed her hand on mine. “I think I have.”

Waking up in a bed that isn’t your own is a strange experience for the first while. Sure, Lilly and I had been dating for a couple months, but staying over at her place still felt novel and new. It didn’t help that I hardly ever woke up next to the same girl I fell asleep with.

I rolled over and saw a short girl getting dressed. I had to take a moment to reflect on how radically different she was from the woman I met in the bar. That woman was classy, elegant, and commanded the room with her presence. But as this girl pulled a plain black bra over her pierced nipples - a strange sight considering she had no piercings for the last few months - and squirmed into tight dark jeans and a faded band t-shirt, it seemed she merely wanted to fade into the background.

“...Lilly?”

The girl smirked and blew a kiss. “In the flesh. Er, rather, a flesh I guess.” I rolled my eyes at the bad joke I’d gotten used to over the last couple months. When your girlfriend is a shapeshifter that really doesn’t have a sense of “identity” you learn to roll with the punches. “You’re so cute when you’re waking up, still a gentleman trying to make sure it’s your girlfriend’s tits you were just ogling.” Her voice was different. Such a strange thing, as you’d expect a girl of a completely different size and shape to sound different, but she still talked like the Lilly I’d gotten to know recently. Today’s voice was rougher, a little scratchy, but still very much hers.

“Where are you going, all dressed up like that?”

She shrugged, grabbing a small backpack that doubled as a purse. It was one of many different styles of bags that adorned the apartment, to complement her various looks. “I’ve got work today.”

“Wait… you have a job? You need to work even though you’re…”

Her eyebrow quirked up. “Even though I’m what?”

I shook my head. Saying the ‘shapeshifter’ word was weird still to me, though I couldn’t place why. Maybe because it meant admitting that magic and supernatural things existed? Or maybe because it made me seem mundane and boring by comparison. “You know. Why don’t you just, like, turn your hand into a pile of diamonds, and then just grow it back?”

Lilly looked positively stunned at me. Had I said something wrong? Was that a rude thing to say to a shapeshifter? Could she not turn into something inanimate like that? After a few moments, she turned her gaze to her hand, and suddenly a pile of diamonds fell to the bed. Her hand swiftly swelled back onto the stub of her arm.

“Huh. Well that changes things.”

A long pause filled the air. “Wait, you mean you’ve never tried to make something before?”

The girl looked sheepishly around the room, a strangely cute look considering the tough-as-nails punk style she was going for. “What can I say? It never occurred to me.” She held her new hand out in front of her, as though studying it for any sign that it hadn’t regrown correctly. Then, she changed it into different hands. A man’s hand, a dark skinned hand, and then back to her pale hand that matched the rest of her nearly albino coloration. I’d never seen her so enraptured by her own power. She always treated it as something to be casual about, just a small piece of who she was. But now it had her attention, and she probed out the possibilities. She grew her nails out, and then shrank them back in. Then she grew them out again, but they were different this time. They were fake nails, changing colors as nail polish formed on top of them. With a moment’s thought, Lily grew her real nails out so that the fake nails were entirely off her fingers, and then her nails seemed to trim themselves, the fake nails falling to the floor.

Satisfied with that test, Lily turned her attention to her wrists. Thin, golden chains formed around them. Perfectly unbroken, these bracelets dangled and swished around her skin. Then, she frowned. “Interesting. I’m still touching them, but I can’t change them anymore. I guess when they stop being attached to me, they aren’t ‘me’ anymore for the sake of my shapeshifting.”

She had more said those remarks to herself than to me. I just sat in bed and watched as she continued to explore this power of hers. It was strange, though, watching as large dark bands started to emerge from her forearms. Perhaps a solid three inches wide, solid black leather cuffs pushed out of her skin and rested flush against the surface. Given that studs and spikes were forming and changing on the surface, I could only assume that Lily had kept them attached to herself, even if just barely. She held her wrists together in front of her, and a thick metal chain seemed to grow out of each of the bands. The chains lifted and waved through the air, connecting to each other. Lily winked at me and grinned wordlessly, and all I could think of was how much of a dork she was being.

I gestured to the cuffs, and then to the pile of diamonds that still rested on the bed. Strange how a literal fortune would be less interesting than an impromptu bondage fantasy. “So, I suppose this removes the need to buy clothes anymore. And it looks like rent and all your utilities are covered, hmm?”

Lily nodded, and tried to reach for the diamonds, only to be stymied by the short chain of her cuffs. With a grunt and a sigh, the restrictive accessories seemed to fade away, presumably being absorbed or something similar back into her arms. Now, successfully, Lily managed to pick up the diamonds, turning them over between her fingers while she thought. “You know, I could pay rent anywhere I wanted.” She turned to look at me. “We could even live together. Find a place big enough, and just enjoy our life.”

With a chuckle, I nodded. “Yeah, that’d be great.”

“Awesome! It’s settled.” I blinked and looked surprised at Lily. “We’re moving by the end of the month.”

 ===

There was a knock at my small apartment door. Then another, and another. Lily was never the most patient person in the world. I finally made it across the cramped studio apartment to the door and popped it open. The hulking figure on the other side of it let herself in. For a long moment, I couldn’t help but stare at her. She was huge, easily eight feet tall and made of muscles. She looked like something out of a comic book, like her name would be “Muscle Maiden” or “Lady Might”. Of course, at that size and with literally hundreds of pounds of muscle flexing under her skin, many feminine features had been foregone. Her breasts were nonexistent, especially compared to the pectorals that threatened to rip through the tight t-shirt.

She laughed. It was still her musical laugh, but the pitch was shifted downward, deeper as it resonated through her large chest and throat. “Are you just going to eye me up all day, Jake?” I blushed, and stepped aside, letting her into my abode. The already cramped space was feeling positively minuscule now. There was a lot of awkward shuffling as we tried to move around each other, and in the process of trying to slip past her, I fell onto the couch. From my lower vantage point, Lily would have been terrifyingly huge, if she hadn’t immediately dropped to her knees to look me in the eyes.

Once she was assured that I was fine, she started to head off, grabbing boxes with ease. I knew what was packed into some of those, and she was easily holding a couple hundred pounds and acting like they were just pillows. I hopped up, grabbing a singular box to help. Lily immediately came over to me and took the box out of my hands, casually adding it to the stack she was holding with a single hand while addressing me with the other.

“Hey, who’s the super strong person here?”

I sighed and rolled my eyes. “You are, but I can help!”

Lily shook her head, pushing her finger onto my chest. “Yeah, you can help, but it’ll take us all day just to get through this if we keep getting in each other’s way.” She smiled at me, trailing her fingers up my chest, over my neck, and onto my cheek, without ever losing contact. Something felt off about her touch, though. It felt… somehow both too smooth and too rough, as though the texture of her skin couldn’t decide what it wanted to be. It created a strange pressure against me, as though magnets were trying to pull my face into her hand.

She had noticed it too, given the strange look on her face. She gently rolled her fingers over my cheek, watching me squirm. “I wonder…” Lily trailed off as she spoke, her face scrunching in concentration. My own face felt uncomfortable, as though it had something akin to the pins and needles of a limb falling asleep moving through it. Lily’s eyes lit up with intense glee, and I felt the same strange sensation pass through my face, and then I felt it happen again.

“What’s happening? Are… are you doing this?” I asked, barely speaking in more than a whisper. The skin on Lily’s hand suddenly felt normal again, and she giggled, caressing my cheek.

“Don’t worry your pretty little face over it.” Once again, her eyes went wide, but the smirk across her lips gave away that it was more of an idea this time than surprise. “Do you trust me? And what I can do?” She sounded so serious at that moment, genuinely wanting to know my answer.

“Of course,” I replied, without hesitation. It was true. Despite our time together only being a couple of months, Lily had only ever been forthcoming and honest about her shapeshifting powers, so I had no reason to doubt her.

Her smile said it all for her. It was both an expression of love and excitement. “Good! Now, I’d tell you to hold still, but something tells me that won’t be necessary…”

I was about to ask what she meant, but the pins and needles were back, and I found myself unable to speak. At first, I thought I just needed to clear my throat, but then I realized I couldn’t open my mouth at all. Then, moments after that revelation, it dawned on me that I wasn’t even breathing. The room seemed to swell in size. My apartment was tiny, only able to hold a couple people at a time, but now, it seemed massive. I realized, belatedly, that it wasn’t just the apartment that was growing, but everything. The furniture, the packed boxes, even Lily. Why, from this perspective, it looked like Lily was multiple stories tall. My brain sluggishly put together all this information, and came to the conclusion that it wasn’t very likely for the entire world to be growing instead of me.

I must have been shrinking. It’s the only thing that really made sense. How was I shrinking though? My mind was in the process of putting it all together, when I was suddenly lifted in the air. Lily’s massive hand encircled my torso and legs entirely, leaving my arms resting atop her grip and my head exposed to the rushing winds of being pulled through the air. My urge to frantically wiggle - a fruitless instinct given my lack of mobility - was quickly suppressed by my fear of heights. Lily held me up in front of her face, and the glances I got toward the floor confirmed I was - relative to my reduced size - multiple stories up in the air. A fall from this height would surely be lethal, or at the very least permanently damaging.

I tried to make eye contact with Lily, but found myself unable to even look around. Fortunately my gaze was more or less at Lily, and I could hear her speak. “Hey, try and stay calm. I’m going to show you what I did. Assuming you can see…” She quickly hurried through my apartment, managing to locate the bathroom. After she flicked on the light, I was able to see her reflection. Strangely, I was nowhere to be found, but she was holding a doll in her hand. It was a beautiful porcelain doll, one that looked brand new despite its antique styling. As Lily gently lifted and moved the arms of the doll, I realized she wasn’t just manipulating the doll. That was me.

“Who’s a good little doll…” Lily murmured, occupying herself with playing with me. I could feel the pins and needles coming back. “That’s right, Dolly, you are.” That uncomfortable feeling was swelling in me, and it felt like there was a cloud of bees swarming in my head. This… wasn’t right, but I couldn’t figure out how. “Well, Dolly, I better get back to moving. Don’t worry, I’ll get all your stuff into our house.” Oh yeah, the move. Strange how that had slipped my mind. Though, it was hard to figure out why I had stuff to move. I was a doll, and dolls don’t have stuff. “Now, you just be a good Dolly and wait here.” It was getting hard to think, but that’s ok, since dolls don’t think. The entire world seemed to take on a dim, sleepy haze. Lily set me down on the counter next to the sink, looking out into the apartment. As she walked away, busying herself with loading everything into the moving truck, I found myself drifting away into a deep sleep, unable to stay conscious without her attention.
