Gina was surprised, it actually worked. Jill - now Jack, Gina corrected herself - had figured out the missing combination of values and settings that had tripped the machine into behaving so peculiarly. Or, he at least got close enough for Gina to dig through the right sections of code and find what was controlling it.

Gina sent over a small software update to her local Virtual Vacation prototype, stepped in, and stepped back out wearing a brilliant new red dress and matching heels. She went back in and out multiple times, changing aspects of her appearance and clothing and rejoicing the she had fixed the bug. She came back out in a more relaxed set of clothes and pushed the software change out to Jack's machine.

Not that Gina wanted to head straight there and change Jack back. She figured letting the new male stew in his stuck state would be fitting revenge for the same stunt that was pulled on her. She ended up going to lunch, instead, then spent the rest of the day back at the office. The bathroom was a small adventure for her, and after nearly heading into the wrong room, she embraced her change and headed into the women's.

The day dragged on by. Gina only had a few code changes to review in the software driving the Virtual Vacations; her team had been addressing most of them, and the software had to be relatively bug free to be in the prototype phase. A chuckle tickled in Gina's throat. "Relatively bug free" apparently meant spending a couple days as the opposite gender.

The end of her shift came and went, and Gina pushed her final code changes before she left the building with many of the other employees. People in other departments didn't recognize her, and eyed her up and down. Her face red, she hurried her pace, cursing the small wedge heels she had selected as part of her final outfit, they were only slowing her down in her escape and giving the other employees a better look at her pivoting and swaying rear.

She ducked into her car, still brightly blushing. She felt hot and her breath came in short pulses, and there was another sensation lower down in her. "Did...did I get turned on from being admired?" Her hair rustled about her as she shook her head, attempting to dislodge the thought. She started her drive back to Jack's house. She would change herself back, then Jack, then go home and not think about this again.

Gina remained resolved until she crossed the threshold into the Virtual Vacation. The room had changed into a seemingly beach villa, and Gina found herself in the bedroom. Jack was a few feet away lounging on the bed, his back to the doorway. His very naked, very defined back. Gina gulped. The strange lower sensation was back. Jack looked over his shoulder at his visitor. "Oh, hey!"

Jack rolled over, facing Gina. She quickly eyed him over, then less quickly found herself inspecting his waist. Jack chuckled, standing up. He watched her bite her lip, the red blush spreading down her face and onto her chest.

"Something on your mind?" Jack asked, tilting his head. He knew the signs and symptoms, he had been in the position just a few days ago. Gina might not mentally be into guys, but her hormones would be making things confusing.

Gina shook her head, turning away. "Valerie? Please use the new Permanent Effects mode that I deployed to this unit earlier, and turn myself and Jack back into our normal, original selves. And… some appropriate clothes for us."

A soft chime indicated she complied, as instantaneously the changes were put into effect. Jill sighed; as Jack she had been curious about more happening between them, but she figured Greg was still upset.

"Valerie, please give Jill her full rights to this unit again." Another chime, and Greg turned to face Jill. "I'm heading home. The problem should be fixed, or at least more stable. You were right, by the way. About what was causing it. Good job."

Greg lingered another moment, looking over Jill before shaking his head and leaving through the doorway back into reality. He looked over himself, then back at the ominously dark doorway to the Virtual Vacation. He half expected to see his coworker come after him, but he wasn't sure if he wanted the male or female version of the person still inside. Either way, there was a lot of baggage in Greg's mind to be unpacked, and he started to mull it over as he got into his car.

The radio switched off from whatever bass-heavy song it was currently playing to a special news bulletin. Their local town had suddenly become far more noteworthy as reports of various fantasy creatures and characters were caught in public. The news described various magical beings, like elves and dwarves and even dragons, as well as beings from science fiction like aliens and robots. The reported even awkwardly explained what a 'furry' was, and how these half human, half animals were running around their sleepy town.

Greg furrowed his brow, which only tightened further as his cell phone rang.

"Greg. Your project has gotten out of control. You need to get to the office immediately, along with Jill Jackson. We know you're both responsible for this mess in the news." His boss was a normally pleasant guy. You could expect him to ask how you're doing, ask what's going on and if this is a bad time, and spend another fifteen minutes just chit chatting before getting to the point. But this wasn't like him at all.

Greg practically flipped the car as he spun it around the corner, stammering out an affirmative and going to Jill's house to drag her along.

Jill and Greg both sat nervously at the desks brought into the lunchroom. The impromptu meeting hall was called because of the larger than usual crowd gathered around them. Creatures of all shapes and sizes breathed and shifted and whispered in entirely inhuman patterns. It felt like a convention with the world's best cosplays, except everyone was focused on the two bland humans who had just been chewed out by every level of management above them.

Now everyone waited in the hushed cafeteria. Management had left to convene in a different room, discussing the repercussions that would befall the staff.

A blanket of silence fell over the room as the supervisors and leaders of the company filed into the room. A young woman, mid twenties and in an excessively expensive suit, took to the stage and stood behind the podium. Seeing such an important person in the lunchroom had a strange effect, and everyone leaned in subty to listen.

"Some of you may know me, but for those who don't, I am Lisa Liserdine, the owner and founder of Innovention, Inc. Today has been an interesting day, as many of you know, and as the scores of press agents outside our doors know.

"There seemed to be an issue with our most recent prototype, the Virtual Vacation. Miss Jacklyn's unit seemed to make any changes in the virtual world affect our physical world. I stead of following the proper channels for fixing the issue, she instead went through the more common method of directly contacting Mr. Garlson about the issue.

"He fixed the issue, with some interesting happenings along the way, and then made the mistake that brought us all here this evening. While fixing other issues, he seemingly mistakenly sent out the code allowing this mistake to every prototype Virtual Vacation there was. The virtual assistants helpfully informed all of our testers about this new option, and our employees took the opportunity to change into rather unique forms."

Lisa took a moment to survey the room. "All of you are Innovention employees, and know our rules about breaches of information. Wearing those forms into public revealed information that wasn't to be made known yet, and that was a violation of your contract. Everyone here could be fired right now, no questions asked."

The room exploded into nervous chittering and whispers, with a couple members shouting their disapproval. At the mere wave of her hand, Lisa managed to get the room silent. “While some members of management wanted that, the decision remained mine to make. I happen to believe that terminating the majority of a company wouldn’t be a good decision.”

A collective sigh of relief washed over the room, but Lisa held up her hand again. “That doesn’t solve the horde of reporters at our doorstep. The fact of the matter is that we can’t keep this a secret, the cat is out of the bag now.

“People are going to expect to be able to turn into anything and anyone they want. Transformations are going to be everywhere.

“We didn’t intend for this to happen, but we just altered the fate of the entire human race.” Lisa took a moment, gesturing at the crowd in the room. “Or, ended the human race. So we need to come up with a way to handle this, immediately.”
