Gina staggered back into the Virtual Vacation located in Jill’s house. She slouched against the frame of the doorway inside the simulation, her hunched posture betraying how weak and weary she was. Her day had been long and tiring, as she fought to try and replicate the conditions that would allow the Virtual Vacations in the lab to change her back into the identity of Greg Garlson. The fact that she couldn’t even acknowledge that she had been Greg wasn’t lost on her, and made the day more taxing.
Jill quickly rushed out to greet Gina, emerging from the doorway of a hotel room. Gina finally took the time to realize that she was located in the hallway of an upscale hotel, with the Virtual Vacation’s ominous dark doorway located where the door to the elevator shaft would be. Jill looked stressed, pacing around Gina.
“Where have you been? I’ve been waiting… a long time, I guess, to see you. Had to ask Valerie to remove my tiredness. I didn’t want to sleep. I didn’t want to miss you coming back. I knew you’d be back. I think I figured out what happened, why I have more controls than normal. I’m sorry I changed you. I just, had to, you know, make my point. I didn’t think about how you would react. I’ve been waiting to say that so long, so it probably sounds insincere. I mean it, though. Seriously. I’m sorry.”
Gina held up her hand, and Jill seemed to almost have to visible brake from her continuous deluge of thoughts. “Can you change me back?”
“Oh, of course, yes, easily. I could change you into anything. Want to be a monster? Want to be a superhero? You could even be a lamp, or something impossible like a shadow!” Jill nodded, noticing Gina tapping her foot and looking impatient. “Yes, sorry, I’ve just waited so long and there’s been no one around. Right! Valerie! Please turn Gina back into Greg Garlson, and give him all the same administrator rights as I have!”
Gina relaxed, nodding. Finally, her - no, his - own body back. He looked down and saw himself already back to normal. A quick pat down reassured him everything was back in order. Jill seemed to almost be fidgeting in place though, as though she couldn’t focus or keep herself still. “Valerie? Please… fix whatever happened to Jill. If she needs sleep, can we make sure she gets some sleep?”
“Of course, Greg Garlson.” Jill collapsed suddenly to the ground. “She will need sleep for approximately three days.”
“Three days… straight? How long has she been awake?”
“In simulated time, Jill has been conscious for approximately four days. She decided to run the simulation at ten times the relative speed of the real world. She refused to make modifications to herself until your return, other than removing her need for rest and her body creating a self stimulating chemical.”
“Jesus…” Greg muttered under his breath. He needed Jill awake again to run some tests, and having a second person present would greatly reduce the risks associated with turning back. Besides, some of what she said sounded fascinating. “Valerie. Are you able to run commands after I leave the unit?”
“Yes, Greg Garlson. As an administrator of Jill’s unit, you are allowed to issue future commands. These commands can be started after a certain amount of time, or based on actions or events. Would you like the tutorial?”
Greg shook his head. He programmed the system, he didn’t need to learn it again. “Good. I will leave the unit. Please run the simulation at the maximum speed, one thousand times normal once I leave. As soon as Jill wakes up, revert the speed back to that of the normal world. I’ll be in shortly after that.”
“Understood, Greg Garlson. Your commands will be processed as instructed.”
Greg slipped into the ‘elevator’ of the hotel, waiting outside the door back in the real world. At a factor of one thousand, the simulation would experience three days in just over four minutes. That meant four minutes of standing in his coworker’s house. The same coworker who had just changed him into a woman and mentally subjugated him into that role. He felt an anger rising inside him.
She had no right to do that to him, and he doubted anyone would disagree with him on that. It was wrong. But… he had learned a lot from the experience. Even now, Greg thought about his time as Gina and wished he could have had a little longer. Maybe tried things, experimented a bit. He paced off, embarrassed at thinking he would have played with himself as a girl. But, wasn’t that the point of the Virtual Vacation? Try and do the impossible, go places and see things that you normally wouldn’t be able to go to?
Granted, being transformed into something else entirely and spat back into the real world as that something else was not exactly in the realm of possibility that they planned for. Getting stuck as that person wasn’t the goal, either. That didn’t have to be how the story ended though.
Greg glanced at his watch. Six minutes had elapsed. Jill should be awake by now, ideally not for more than a minute or two if Valerie had slowed the simulation down again. He stepped into the Virtual Vacation’s doorway and found himself in the hotel, with a groggy Jill sitting against the wall.
“Oops… sorry I kinda left you there…” Greg mumbled, offering a hand to help her up.
Jill accepted the gesture and waved away his concerns. “No worries. I probably needed the sleep anyway. So… how long’s it been?”
“About three days for you. For me, a few minutes. I sped up the simulation for you.”
Jill nodded, heading into one of the bedrooms. “So, I sped up the simulation while I was waiting for you. I wanted to try and figure out why my unit is glitching out."
"Why didn't you slow down the simulation, if you were waiting for me?" Greg followed into the room, halting abruptly at the doorway. The walls were covered in scribbles, notes Jill had been taking during her time here. They looked like the writing of a crazy person.
"Because I wanted more time to think and study this, obviously. After I sent you out there, I realized you would have a hell of a day, and wanted to be able to give you some answers."
"Right… and you wrote on the walls and not something normal like paper because…?"
"It was faster, easier to get to. That's all." Jill looked back at Greg staring at her. "I'm not crazy. Don't act that way."
"Yeah, ok. So, what did you figure out? I left my degree in wall scribbles at home."
Jill stifled a laugh. Clearly Greg was in a better mood than when he came back as Gina. "Well, I went through all the user modes. The machine skipped me all the way up to administrator when I entered, since I'm beta testing for Innovention, and I work there, like you.
"I should have, if I was a normal customer, started at what Valerie keeps calling Entry Level. That's the tutorials and such, which I skipped. Next is Normal User, which has all the basic entry rules. That's what you had when you entered. Limited simulation speed controls, and can make changes to the simulation if an administrator allows it. Administrator is the next and final role, which gives full control over your own unit."
Greg interjected. "I know this, I programmed it in. If it was an issue with being the administrator, I would have been able to change back at my machine."
"Right," Jill continued, pacing over to another section of wall. "If it was JUST an issue of being an administrator, then we'd have solved the mystery already. But, what model unit is this?"
"It's a normal unit, one for consumers."
"Of course, and what's available in this consumer model?"
"It's the same as the prototype machines in the lab, just a nicer shell."
"No, it's not. It connected to the internet. Innovention provides updates and better AI for Valerie, as well as being able to custom design experiences and load them at any other Virtual Vacation. It also offers the remote support in case something goes wrong a tech can fix it."
"So you're saying the internet messed it up?"
"I'm saying, Valerie connected to the internet, saw that I was an Innovention employee AND that I owned this unit, so she assigned me as administrator, but also put this unit into a debug support mode, with myself as the support tech."
"Ok. Then why didn't I get the same rights when I entered? Hell, why didn't Valerie say something along those lines before?"
"You were the administrator of this unit, and there was ready an employee assigned this support case, in her eyes. Why would she double up on that? And she didn't say because she couldn't. By her own admission, she is unable to identify the support agent inside the simulation. If something has gone wrong, assigning that label could make the employee targeted by the virus or whatever is in here."
Greg looked over her notes more carefully while he pondered this. They were a somewhat accurate recreation of his own notes on user permissions in the system, but the information was clearly gathered through odd means. "How'd Valerie tell you all this? She's supposed to be rather tight-lipped on how the inner workings of the Virtual Vacation are configured."
"That was why it took so long. I had to ask her question after question, and then ask questions about her answers, and pry at any gals I could. Hence the notes."
Greg nodded. In theory, this was reproducible, now that they knew how her unit trigger the response. Debug support mode can instantiate any matter from the simulation as the AI dictates is needed, but since there wasn't an emergency, Valerie let everything go through the unit as though it belonged.
"Jill, I'm going to see if I can reproduce this at the lab, alright? We're going to see if this is the right combination of effects to make it work." Jill nodded and Greg paused for a moment on his way out of the room. "Valerie? Remove Jill's administrator permissions, she is to be unable to alter her own avatar. Set her avatar to that of an attractive, muscular young man, early twenties. Make sure he can only call himself Jack. Jack Jillson, that is. And set my avatar back to Gina, please."
The changes instantaneously affected the pair and they looked at each other. Gina's diminutive height had left her a bit shorter than Jill, but next to Jack she was nearly half his height. Jack looked surprised and confused, unable to form a sentence to Gina.
"Jack, listen. I'll change you back when I get back from the lab. But for now, try and enjoy your new body. And consider us even."
