NOTE: Germany made same-sex marriage legal in 2017, Canada in 2003. The story is set closer to the earlier date (to map it somewhat to events in my life), though not at any super-specific time there. When I worked out the dates to figure out how many months they’d been together, the holiday Monday in Chapter 17 aligned best with the 2005 calendar, so nominally it takes place that year.
