“Hey, Ash, why the long face?” asked Ellen as she entered her living room. Ashley was perched on the couch beside Elliot.
Ashley waved to Ellen, trying and failing to put a brave smile on her face. “Sorry, just... I’ve been working with Kevin for days and days now, and I can’t even change an apple to an orange.”
“Hey,” interjected Elliot. “You got the apple to turn orange. That’s a start.”
Ashley giggled weakly. “It looked like it had been dipped in orange paint! It’s so frustrating. I can see the spells, and I understand the theory. I just have the magical capacity of an asthmatic mouse.”
“That sucks, Dragon Sis. I’ve got more power than I know what to do with, I’d share if I could.”
Ashley’s grin grew. “That’d be amazing if you could.” She hopped off the couch. “Wonder Twins... I mean Dragon Sisters powers activate!”
Ashley put her fist out for a fist-bump, and Ellen obliged. “Dragon Sisters powers activate!” As their fists touched, there was a bright discharge between the two, blinding everyone in the room briefly.
“Ow, ow ow...” Ashley was struggling with her shirt, and both the Dunkels lept to help her. Once they had it off, the reason for Ashley’s discomfort became obvious. Two green dragon-wings sprouted from her back.
“Oh, wow,” gushed Ellen. “Dragon Sisters for real!”
Ashley craned her neck and her wings suddenly flared wide, to a magnificent span of... about three feet. “Eee! I have wings! Wait, why do I have wings?”
“Maybe I gave you some power after all. Quick, try a spell!”
The room suddenly smelled strongly of citrus. Ashley covered her mouth in surprise. “Oh gosh. Oh no!”
Ellen spun about and saw a four foot tall orange in the middle of the living room. “What? What did you do?”
“The ‘turn into an orange’ spell. I think I cast it on...”
Ellen started to laugh uproariously. “You turned... Elliot. Into an orange! Nice one!”
“How is it nice? He’s an orange! And he smells really delicious...” Ashley shook her head vigorously. “No! I have to turn him back.”
“Eh, he can turn back on his own. I’m sure he doesn’t want to be an orange.”
“Yeah, but that could take days. That spell had a lot of power behind it.”
Ellen shrugged. “Then we’ll get Tedd to change him back. I’m sure he’ll have a way.”
Ashley shook her head. “No. I can fix this! I just have to...” She aimed her hand at the orange. “Revert!”
The orange remained stubbornly an orange.
Ashley tried a few more times, each more frantic than the last. No effect.
“Um, Ash?”
Ashley sighed and glanced toward Ellen, head drooping. “Yeah?”
“Your wings are gone. Maybe you used up all the power I gave you.” Ellen held her fist out. “Dragon Sisters powers activate?”
Ashley echoed the gesture, and this time they were braced for the lightshow. After a moment it dimmed to a more tolerable brightness, and continued to pulse as long as Ellen held her fist to Ashley’s.
Ellen gasped after a few moments. “Your wings! They’re... Ow, there’s something under my shirt.” She quickly divested herself of her T-shirt, revealing wings of her own. She spread them at the same time Ashley did. Both of them had wingspans wider than their outstretched arms.
“So cool,” breathed Ashley as she sculled her wings through the air. The breeze set the magazines on the side-tables fluttering. The noise woke Brownie, who glanced up at Ashley, shrugged, and curled back up for a further nap.
“Try the reverse spell again,” encouraged Ellen.
Ashley pointed her hand at the orange once more. “Revert!”
A moment later Elliot stood up, and hugged her tight. “You did it!”
“You’re not mad?” asked Ashley worriedly.
Elliot shook his head. “I got used to this kind of stuff when Tedd started experimenting with the TF Gun. What was I?”
“An enormous orange. And you smelled so good... Oh bother.”
“Ashley!”
Ashley hung her head. “Sorry. I’ve been working on that spell so long it’s kind of reflexive.”
Ellen sighed. “And your wings are gone again. But mine... aren’t?”
“Maybe you can will them away?” suggested Ashley.
“Maybe. Don’t want to yet.” Ellen held out her fist once more.
Ashley put her fist to Ellen’s, without the phrase, and power still flowed. “Are you doing this deliberately?”
Ellen nodded, watching as Ashley’s wings grew in, barely noticing the scales cascading over her chest until her arm turned green. “Woah. Even more dragony. I wonder if I can go all the way.”
“Form of a Dragon!” called out Ashley. A puff of smoke enveloped her, and when it cleared an Ashley-sized dragon was standing on its hind legs. Her body had lengthened but become much narrower, and she had a long sinuous neck contributing to her apparent height.
A moment later Ashley dropped to all fours. Her shoulders barely came to Ellen’s knees. She craned her neck to look at her self. “Did I do this?”
“I think the power might have done it since you welcomed it. Form of a dragon!” called Ellen. She glanced down at herself and pouted. “Foo. Ah screw that.” She pointed her palm at Ashley. “Clone power activate!”
Soon two green dragons were trying out their wings and discovering that they were small enough that flight was an option. With some difficulty they made it outside, and headed for the sky.
Ashley took a few nasty tumbles before Ellen managed to teach her the finer points of flight, but soon both were soaring through the Dunkel’s back yard and into the park beyond. They perched on top of a swing-set for a breather.
“Flying is fun!” enthused Ashley. “But I feel like I’ve forgotten something.”
An orange in a super-suit drifted to a landing beside them.
“Oops.”
