Gwen made shooing motions at Erin and Sandy. “Go dance.”
The pair looked to Donna first. She nodded. “The experiment is over.”
“Yes, Mistr... I mean yes, Donna.” Erin grinned apologetically.
Sandy hesitated at the door. “Can we ask a favour before we go?”
“Anything,” replied Donna earnestly.
“Turn us back into catgirls.” At Donna’s dark look Sandy held up her hands. “Not pets! I can see how you feel about that. Twin catgirl dancers.”
“Oh! Sure, I’ll...” Donna trailed off as she realized the changes had started before Sandy had finished asking. “Apparently all you need to do is ask.”
Pale-furred ears with dark tips grew in, followed by demi-muzzles. Long swishy tails followed, and their hands acquired a dusting of chocolate brown fur. Their heights and builds shifted subtly, converging on the average. They darted to a mirror when the changes were done, oohing over their looks and peering closely to see if they could find any differences at all.
“They seem happy,” said Gwen. “So why the frown?”
“They’re bound to me,” said Donna softly. “Like you, they can draw on my power to change. Just each other, though. So far.”
“You could cut them off.”
Donna nodded. “I probably should before they figure it out.” She watched them run up onto the stage, smiling at the eager excitement she could feel through the bond. “But I don’t want to. It would be like cutting off...”
“Part of yourself?” supplied Gwen into Donna’s pensive silence.
“Not exactly. I... need them. Their energy... no. Their...faith.” Donna turned worried eyes on her friend. “What is happening?”
“The Goddess thing isn’t a joke any more,” said Gwen, sternly. “Not that it ever really was. I think you’ll get a lot of followers if all of them get to transform on the nights of the full Moon.”
Donna smiled. “I... think I might actually like that. Imagine... dozens of followers who can be whatever they want to be.”
Gwen laughed. “Dozens? Oh, honey, with those kinds of benefits you’ll have thousands of followers. Maybe millions.”
Donna looked stricken. “M... millions? What scares me is... I think I have the power to do that.”
“Does it really scare you?”
“Shouldn’t it? I mean, it should. The idea of becoming one of the world’s major religions should, really. I just...” Donna’s gaze went distant and her body started to flicker in and out of reality.
“Donna! Snap out of it,” ordered Gwen.
Donna’s body stabilized as a transparent version of her human body. “Right, sorry. Maybe it’s time to give Arwen a visit. She has a case for me, too...”
Gwen nodded. “Sounds perfect. I’ll hold the fort here, saving some of the fun fantasies until you get back. Take Bunhill with you, she could probably use a chat with Arwen herself.”
Bunhill nodded at Gwen’s assessment, and grasped Donna’s hand. “Please?”
Donna smiled at her. “How could I say no?”
As they shrunk, Donna matching Bunhill’s pace, the bunny-girl asked, “Do we have to shrink away to nothing? I feel so vulnerable then.”
Donna stopped when they were a fraction of an inch tall, the room towering over them like the Grand Canyon. “Is this better?”
Bunhill nodded. “A stray thought won’t erase us.”
“Magic censorship won’t let us be seen outside like this, but that’s easily dealt with.” Bunhill went transparent, and felt more than saw Donna become a transparent cocoon around her. They zipped under the door, then through a room full of incomprehensibly huge giantesses. Gwen turned to wave at them, giggling as she felt Donna’s perspective, then more as Donna orbited her for a good look. She opened the back door for them, and Donna flitted out into the night air.
Navigating the city was easier when she could see it, Donna found. Flying a little above head height kept all the landmarks in perspective, and she easily found her way to Arwen’s office. The mail-slot made entering simple, and they grew back to normal height just inside the door.
“Arwen?” called Donna once she was properly human once more.
“In here!” came a familiar voice from Arwen’s office, so Donna tugged Bunhill along behind her.
Two vaguely familiar people were sitting on Arwen’s couch. They looked up from their magazines and did a double-take at the bunny-girl beside Donna. “Why is she here?” the woman asked.
“She needs counselling,” answered Donna simply. “And Arwen understands the situation already, which will save a lot of time. But we can deal with you first.” She frowned, then snapped her fingers. “I remember you two. Your fantasy lover was...”
The woman shook her head. “Don’t say the name. That... did not work out well.”
Her husband snorted. “I forgave you for that already. Not sure she has.”
“You looked like her! I thought I was kissing you!”
He hugged her warmly. “It’s OK. It was actually kind of hot, in retrospect.”
That got him a bruised shoulder, which he laughed off. Donna shook her head. “That’s not a very nice way to treat your husband.”
The woman apologized, and went on to explain that she’d been so scared she’d completely messed things up with her husband by doing that. She swore she never wanted to see that woman again.
Donna chuckled softly. “Fair enough. So what am I turning you two into tonight? Two men?”
Both of them made a face at Donna, making her laugh out loud. “I see. Arwen?”
“They came to me after their session, very confused. Carey likes being a guy, but after spending a week as two girls, well... Amanda isn’t willing to switch back to her old team, as it were. We’ve had a lot of productive talks over the past few months, but there’s a fundamental impasse.”
Carey leaned forward. “I’m willing to be her girl, part time. But my job, my family, the rest of my life...”
Donna smiled. “And so you brought me in again. I’m sure I can find an answer you’ll both be happy with. One possibility would be to make you sort of half-and-half. With a shirt and pants on you’d look like you do now. But underneath... Female. Hairless, small but inflatable breasts...”
Amanda was shaking her head. “I like petite girls. Ones I can...” she flushed, but Carey encouraged her to go on. “Ones I can dominate physically.”
“Ah. That’s a bit more than I could manage as a bi-modal thing.” Donna held up a hand as Amanda’s face fell. “That’s not the only option. How would you feel about having two different bodies? One a petite woman, looking exactly as Amanda is imagining right now. The other... you.”
Carey’s eyes went wide. “You could do that? That’d be awesome. Can we try it now?”
Donna nodded, and turned her gaze to Amanda. “So. If you could pick the perfect form for your sweetie, what would it look like?”
“Him as a girl,” Amanda answered promptly. “Same hair, just shoulder-length. Five feet tall, and a slim build to match. I’m not much on boobs, but she should be obviously female. And really, really sensitive everywhere, but most especially in the hollow of her neck.”
Donna turned to Carey. “Pluck out one of your hairs.” He did so, and she held out her hand for it. The hair changed and grew in the palm of her hand, becoming a tiny woman that started to grow. At a foot tall, Donna stopped it, and set it in Amanda’s hands.
Amanda stared down at it in wonder. “She’s beautiful. Are you going to make her big?”
“I wanted to discuss other options first. Having two bodies to feed and deal with all the various... biological imperatives, it’s inconvenient at best. I could make her robotic. You’d barely notice, other than that she doesn’t need to eat or breathe. She would need to recharge once in a while.”
“You had me sold at not breathing,” said Amanda with a giggle.
Donna looked over to Carey, who nodded. The tiny figure reshaped and grew, and before long was standing at its full five foot height.
“Woah,” said Carey and his female counterpart, in sync. “This is trippy. And going to take some getting used to.”
“Yeah, it takes some practice. I’ve done things like this a few times now, and most people can adapt given a little time. For now, she has an off switch.” Donna touched the back of the robot girl’s neck and she went still.
Carey sighed softly. “Better. I’ll practice with her at home. What do you think, sweetie?”
Amanda was staring at the girl. “I... she looks so real! Can I touch her?”
Donna laughed. “The idea was that you’d do rather more than just touch her. She’s fully functional. Even like this, though that’d be more like playing with a poseable love-doll.”
Amanda grinned wickedly. “I’m going to have to try that. Can you add a switch that lets Carey feel what she’s feeling but not move her?”
“Kinky,” said Carey. “I like it.” At his grin, Donna started the requested change.
“This seems a little unbalanced,” said Arwen. “You’re going to make love to this new version of Carey, but what does he get?”
“Blue balls?” giggled Amanda. “Sorry, honey. I hadn’t thought of it that way. Could you make a doll of me, too? One with a switch that makes it... I mean...”
“One that would make it willing and able to please your husband? Without you having to feel what it’s doing?” asked Donna.
Amanda nodded. “That seems fair, doesn’t it?”
Carey nodded, and so another robot doll took shape. Soon the two of them were trying to figure out how to get their dolls into their car, taking turns walking their other-self out of the building – Amanda could “inhabit” her robot-self the same way Carey could with his. After they’d left, Donna couldn’t stop giggling.
“What?” asked Arwen. “Am I going to have to deal with crisis counselling for those two?”
Donna smirked. “I doubt it. But... her robot has inflatable boobs too. I figured it was only fair.”
“Hardly seems giggle-worthy.”
“The nympho mode switch and the sense inhibit switches are separate.”
Arwen’s mouth gaped open. “So she might accidentally trigger both and find out what it’s like to enthusiastically make love to her husband?”
Donna’s smirk grew wider. “I don’t think it’ll be an accident.”
“You’re incorrigible.”
“Thank you.” Donna’s smile faded and she sighed. “Do you have time to talk?”
Arwen sat up in her chair, looking professional despite the late hour. “Of course. What’s troubling you?”
“Many things, but I can handle them. Mostly. I... killed two ghouls tonight. One will be in the news, though what actually happened won’t.”
Arwen raised an eyebrow, but said nothing.
“I... suppose I should feel guilty. One of them had kept their humanity enough to pass. He also tried to kill me, tried to kidnap my family, and took over my mind briefly, until Bunhill here and Gwen snapped me out if it. Even after all that, I didn’t realize that feeding him too much power would make him explode, I was just... just...” Donna shook her head. “No. I wanted him dead. He died. Connected? Maybe. I don’t know. Every ghoul so far has reacted differently. Bunhill became human, then tried to kill herself. Jim gobbled up the power greedily and was at least partially destroyed by his own greed. They seem vulnerable to that. The last one I fed only a little power, and instead of healing, it... just crumbled to ash. It didn’t want to live.”
“How could it?” asked Bunhill into the silence. “So much death. The price is too high just to keep yourself alive. None of us knew, going in, just what it would entail. A little here, a little there. It kept us going, and did no real harm. Not to others.” Bunhill pulled in on herself and shivered. “But oh, it does harm to you.”
Arwen gathered the rabbit-girl into her arms as she sobbed. “We might be a while,” she told Donna, who nodded and vanished.
When she reappeared at the Blue Vixen, Gwen pounced. “Did you talk to her about the whole Goddess thing?”
Donna shook her head. “I talked about killing ghouls, then Bunhill had her long-postponed breakdown. She needs it more.”
Gwen hugged her, and pulled her toward Rowan and her stack of little slips. “C’mon. You know what always cheers you up...”
Donna chuckled, and accepted a slip. “Shoes? I don’t think I’ve turned anyone into shoes before.”
The man she met in private room 2 smiled when he saw her. “Will you be dancing in me?” he asked in slightly accented English.
Donna considered that for a moment. “It might be best if I don’t. I’ve never danced in high heels before, and I’ve become somewhat hard on my wardrobe of late.” She held out a hand, let it shift slightly more crystalline.
“Ouch. Perhaps a different dancer?”
Donna smiled. “I can arrange that. Should I tell them the shoes are a person, or not?”
He beamed at her. “You’d give them to someone unaware? That would be awesome.” His accent became more pronounced in his excitement.
“Is that German I hear? Aren’t you a bit far from home?”
He nodded enthusiastically. “I came especially for this. The rumours about this place are everywhere, and a friend of mine told me I wouldn’t be disappointed.”
Donna shook her head. “People are travelling just to live out their fantasies... OK, when I say it like that, it’s hardly surprising at all. How many people know?”
Her guest shrugged. “Enough that I ended up here. Can you really do it?”
“Of course. What sort of shoes would you like to be?”
“That’s not what I want.”
“You don’t want to be shoes? But...”
“No! I don’t want to choose. I want it to be someone else that decides what I look like.”
“But not for how long?” Donna asked, leaning forward to study him.
“I want to go home. My flight leaves on Tuesday.”
Donna tried not to giggle. “Not willing to go home air freight?”
His eyes went very wide. “Could you do that? Oh, but who’d make sure I’m safe at the other end?”
“You have an address in mind. I can see it in your eyes, there’s someone back home who you’d love to be delivered to.”
He nodded reluctantly. “I don’t know her shoe size. Or how she’d feel about me appearing in her closet. Or how she feels about me, period.”
Donna sighed sympathetically. “When you get home, ask. You’ll never know until you try.”
“I’ll...” He stared down at his body, which was shrinking away while becoming shiny and red. “Oh!”
“Surprise.”
The grin that got her made the trick worth her while. Soon there were nothing but a shiny red pair of high heels sharing the room with Donna. She scooped them up, and sought out Neysa.
When Donna found her, she asked how the new girls were doing. Neysa shot her a dirty look. “Cherry’s great, and is queued up for her turn. Kenzie here, though... I don’t know what to do with her. She’s not dancer material.”
Kenzie sighed. “I’m sorry, I’m just not used to moving like this. If it was a combat drill, or a martial arts display...”
Donna chuckled. “Should we go up on stage and spar? That might be fun. First I need to find Cherry, I’ve got the perfect shoes for her.”
Neysa shook her head. “She’s good for a beginner, but she’ll never be able to dance in heels that tall. Can you change them to my size?”
Donna grinned, and handed over the shoes. “Already done.”
Neysa inserted herself into the order just after Cherry, so Donna went to the door to watch each in turn. Kenzie sidled up beside her just as Cherry’s music started. “She looks happy up there.”
“Dancing like that is... liberating. You really should try it once. Even if Neysa thinks you’re...”
“Better suited as a mannequin?” said Kenzie with a wry smile. “They kept giggling over it, calling me stiff. I’m actually starting to wonder what it might be like.”
“It wouldn’t be hard to arrange. I’ve done it before. We could put you in a club T-shirt and stand you by the door...”
Kenzie laughed. “Sure, what the hell. Beats getting laughed off the stage. Wait, what if someone steals the mannequin – I mean me?”
“Lousy time to ask that question,” said Donna with a grin, pointing at Kenzie’s feet. As Kenzie watched her legs slowly become inert plastic, Donna went on to explain that she could feel where anything she’d touched was. So even if the mannequin were to wander, Donna would track it down.
Kenzie touched her hollow chest with a stiffening hand. “Oh. Okay then.” Her face froze moments later.
Donna hoisted the new mannequin in one arm, and carried her toward the club floor. The bartender grinned at the sight, and was more than happy to provide a T-shirt for Kenzie to model. Donna set her up beside the bar, and rearranged her hands so they could hold a tray of snacks. “Perfect.”
As she turned back to walk through the crowd, Donna realized she’d gathered an array of patrons in her wake. They all wanted a little something about themselves changed, and she was only too glad to let her power leak out and work its magic on them. She barely had to put any effort into it, as everyone’s images of what they wanted to look like were so clear. None of the changes were especially dramatic. Longer hair on one, blonde hair for another. Two women who wanted bigger chests, but only by a couple of cups. Donna resized their bras, but not their tops, so buttons started to strain. Several guys got more muscular. Nobody was dreaming big... nobody except one guy hanging back behind the others.
Donna approached him. “Dream bigger.”
He startled, tearing his gaze away from the bar and to the shimmering woman before him. “What?”
“Just say it. I won’t bite.”
“What’s that feel like?” he asked, pointing at the mannequin.
Donna shrugged. “Not very much, really. Hard plastic, no nerves. All you can do is watch how others react to you.”
“Oh,” the guy said dejectedly, and started to turn away.
“Wait! What did you think it would be like?”
He shuffled back to face Donna and shrugged. “I dunno. Sexy. Like I’d feel every touch magnified a thousand-fold. Turned on by breezes, or just the feeling of people looking at me.”
“But they’re just plastic. How would that even... work...” Just by thinking about it, Donna’s mind had lept into action. The robots she’d made could feel, and that was an electromechanical process that could easily enough be amplified.
“I understand.”
“No! I could do it. But... I think a thousand-fold amplification might fry something. And if someone bumped into you, can you even imagine the pain?”
“But... but the whole point is pure pleasure, not pain!”
Donna frowned. “That amount of pleasure would turn your mind to mush. It’d be faster to just wire up your pleasure center if we’re going that route. Gah, like I need another way to brainwash people.”
“So... will you do it to me?” the guy asked hopefully.
“Think about this,” said Donna. “I won’t leave you like that. I’ll change you back, then it’s no more for the rest of the night, the rest of the month too. You’ll have a taste of it, then be denied forever after.”
“Forever after? But what about next month.”
Donna sighed. “I was being dramatic. Point is, it’s going to mess you up. Are you really sure?”
“Yes.”
Donna looked him over once more, then handed him one of Arwen’s business cards. “Go talk to her about this self-destructive behaviour. If she clears you, I’ll do it.”
“I have to talk to a shrink to get turned into a mannequin?” he asked incredulously.
“To get your brain turned to mush, yes. I think you’re crazy, but I’d like a second opinion and I value hers.”
Donna turned away and headed back to the green room, patrons parting before her determined stride. That she’d grown to nearly seven feet tall as she was storming off may have contributed.
In the green room, a hissy fit of epic proportions was taking place. Donna recognized Carmen and Tawny at the center of it, but the four women around her didn’t seem particularly familiar. There was something about being turned into breasts, and she shook her head and turned to Gwen. “What is this about?”
“The party the night after the full moon. Carmen brainwashed those two into thinking they should come back and be her boobs forever, and Tawny’s trying to persuade them to be her boobs instead. Then their friends showed up to try to talk them out of it, but now it seems like they’re seriously considering getting the same thing done.”
“What is it with people and their self-erasing kinks?”
Gwen giggled. “You’re one to talk. How many times have you erased yourself or others by accident, now? And that time with the silver box was on purpose, I think.”
Donna actually blushed, her cheeks becoming ruby-tinted crystal. “I... Yeah, fine. But all this bitching presumes I’m actually going to change them in the first place, doesn’t it?”
The arguing rose to an even higher pitch, drowning out Gwen’s answer.
“Stop it, all of you!” yelled Donna.
The room went completely silent in an instant. Nobody moved. Not even a quiver. The arguing tableau was held in place as if it were a statue.
“Bother,” said Donna with a long sigh. “Now what have I done?”
