Moonstone - Chapter 21
---------
Donna - she still thought of herself as Donna despite being stuck as a catgirl for a week - was bored. She'd stalked every part of the house she could stalk. "Magic censorship" prevented her going anywhere that someone outside could see her.
Her wife Sidney had tried getting her to wear silver. That would let her stay human for more than a few hours at a time. Duncan had done it. Once, briefly, right after Valentine's Day. He had lasted all of ten seconds before dropping the ring like a hot potato. He hated the person that silver made him into - someone who was... normal. Who didn't yearn to change shape, to try life in all its many forms. Losing his link to the Moon was the worst part, it had felt like there was a hole in his soul.
During the day, Donna could play with the kids. They loved their 'Auntie Kitty'. She used a cat-claw trimmer to keep her claws blunted, so that pouncy play didn't end in tears. That was a lot of fun, and a good distraction. But once the kids were abed, Donna found their home confining.
As her impatience with the ever so slowly waxing Moon reached a breaking point, Sidney suggested she try bundling up. "Perhaps you could go out in a burka, or something like that?"
Donna sighed. "I tried. The eye-slit shows fur and a bit of muzzle. And very feline eyes."
"What about a really heavy veil?"
Donna stared at her gape-mouthed for a few beats. "I hadn't thought of that. With my eyes, that could work..."
"Your eyes?" Sidney asked, confused.
"I gave myself the whole cats can see in the dark thing."
"Handy."
It took two layers of one of Donna's dancing silks (she'd bought a few of Rowan's extras) and an improvised deep-cowled robe, but Donna finally stood out in the night air. She couldn't see very well, and she smelled veil rather than fresh air, but for a few minutes of freedom that barely mattered.
Late that night Donna cut out little slits for over her eyes. And when Sidney was finally in bed, she hopped in her car and drove off. With the slits, she could see well enough to drive. Barely.
There was a huge park not far from their house, thick with mature second growth trees. Donna parked at the edge of it, and wandered out among the trees. Her uncomfortable shoes were the first to go. Soon she found she could ditch the veil, then the robe... nobody was out tonight, it seemed. And the trees and underbrush cut the sight lines to nearly nothing.
Donna laughed a guttural laugh that was at least half feral snarl, and raced into the forest, exulting in the power of her form. She had no idea how long she ran for. She could have run forever... but eventually instinct pulled her up short. There was a clearing up ahead. To Donna's eyes, starlight lit it clearly. She slowly prowled into it, sniffing the air. What was that tantalizing smell?
She was literally on top of the deer before it noticed her. It scrambled to its hooves in a flailing panic, and tossed Donna head over tail. The deer dashed frantically into the forest, tail flagging. Donna chased it, often close enough to brush its flank with her sadly blunted claws.
When the deer burst out onto an expanse of close-mown grass, Donna came to a stumbling stop. She couldn't go out there! There was a house overlooking the lawn, and someone might see her!
Donna ghosted back into the forest, away from the houses. Once she could think rationally about it, she realized she'd hit the other end of the park. Or at least one of the sides. She cast about to get her bearings, but from under the forest's canopy she couldn't see a single star.
What she did have was certain knowledge of the Moon's location, even though it was below the horizon. That, and a good guess at the time (a bit after two in the morning) gave Duncan the information to figure out which way was south, back to the car.
The walk back took ages longer than the run and hunt had. Donna disturbed two more deer along the way, but managed to rein in her instincts. Mostly.
Skirting the edge of the park at the limit magic censorship imposed, Donna managed to locate her original trail. That soon led her to her discarded clothes. With a sigh, she bundled herself up, bade the welcoming forest farewell, and headed back home.
In the morning Sidney took one look at Donna's disheveled fur, and the burrs and twigs tangled in her hair, and sighed. "You went for a run in the park, didn't you."
Donna could only nod. And grin.
"Had fun?"
Donna nodded again, her grin broadening to show all her pointy teeth.
"I guess I should be thankful there's no blood or fur in those. Go clean up, you're a mess."
It took Donna the entire morning to get everything out of her hair and fur.
She still wanted to go for a run the next night, but let Sidney sweet-talk her into staying in the nice warm bed instead. It was rather cozier than the park in February, Donna had to admit as she drowsed off to sleep. Still... she needed something to hunt.
When she told her wife as much the next night, Sidney suggested she apply her hunting instincts to the job boards instead. To Donna's amazement, that worked very well indeed. Sure, crafting the perfect resume didn't have the same visceral thrill as running after a fleeing deer. It satisfied the huntress inside her nonetheless, the satisfaction of a hunt well-concluded.
Once the Moon had waxed enough that Duncan could stay human for more than a few hours at stretch, he set off to deliver the resumes the huntress had crafted. He felt a new confidence growing. Several of the jobs she'd found were ones he wouldn't have thought to apply for, but they did seem interesting. He found it amusing that the catgirl who could barely access his technical skills had more faith in them than he did.
They kept at it. The huntress found more jobs each night, and Duncan applied for each one, delivering them with feline confidence.
Soon enough, the night of the first quarter Moon arrived. Donna reappeared in her human guise, to Sidney's disappointment.
"It has been so nice having you home nights. Do you have to go?"
Donna shrugged. "The bank balance says I do."
Sidney hugged her husband, kissed her on the cheek, and let her go. "Be safe."
Back at the Blue Vixen, Donna slipped into her role with ease. Nobody said a thing about her two-week absence. Kate asked how she was doing. Donna truthfully told her that she'd never felt better. Ana didn't say anything, but Donna could feel that the older dancer was
relieved to see her return. The shining look of faith was gone, replaced by a wary trust.
Donna found the dancing almost as invigorating as the night hunt had been. The huntress was there too, behind her eyes, watching the crowd. She gave a snort of disgust and curled up to sleep - there was no challenge to be found out there.
Later, Donna prowled through the crowd. Many leered at her, but few met her gaze. None held it for long.
Then she bumped into a familiar face, made more noticeable because its owner didn't flinch away from her. It took her a few moments to remember his name. "Hi Jeremy. Do you still have the silk veil?"
He grinned, and nodded. "I shall treasure it always. I hope you replaced it, a dance of the six veils would just be wrong."
Donna laughed, then fixed him with her gaze, letting the huntress out again. She saw his eyes widen, but he didn't turn away. He almost looked like one of the deer she'd run across in the forest, staring at her with wide eyes. After a few heartbeats she relented, turning her gaze away from him to release him.
"What do you see that the others don't?" Donna asked.
"I don't understand."
"Their reaction to a predator in their midst is to scatter. You're different." She fixed him with her gaze once again, but held the huntress in check.
Jeremy managed a lopsided grin. "Maybe I like the idea of being prey."
"You'd like to be chased like a mouse?"
Jeremy shuddered slightly, but the grin didn't slip. It did take him some effort to reply, with a whispered, "yes."
"See me on the night of a full Moon, mouse. You might get your chance." She gave him her best predatory grin, then prowled on. He still hadn't flinched. He actually seemed excited.
The week carried on much the same. Donna was a woman apart at the club - all her tips came from dances, none from the hustle. She couldn't bring herself to do it, it just seemed wrong. The dancing was fun, but she felt as if she'd reached the limits of where that could challenge her.
She wanted something new.
Toward the end of the week, the Moon was rising late enough that Donna could change back to Duncan before going to bed. Sidney preferred waking up with her husband beside her, and truth be told, Duncan preferred it too.
As a result, when a call came in asking for a phone interview, Duncan was in the right gender and state of mind to answer it. It was a long, and quite interesting discussion. At the end, they set up a face-to-face interview the following Monday.
Duncan felt really good about this one, and gave Sidney and the kids big hugs. He knew better than to count his chickens before they hatched, but the relief at finally getting another interview was huge.
Before that, though, there was another full Moon night, and a Saturday to boot. Things would be hopping at the Blue Vixen. Duncan did not want the slightest chance of anything going wrong this time. He checked the weather forecast on multiple websites as Saturday progressed. It seemed pretty certain that it would be cloudy when the Moon rose, but clear up around midnight.
The Moonstone was nearly drained - to the point that Duncan wasn't sure he could become Donna again without first charging it. So he had to draw on the Moon once again.
He needed to do it before going to the Blue Vixen and the distractions there. He also wanted to keep the kids from being exposed to the Moonstone just yet. His office downstairs had a window that was mostly blocked by hedge, but if he was close enough to it it would give him a view of the sky. He just had to move his desk over a bit, and shift a few of the boxes that had accumulated in the seldom-used room.
Finally, Duncan stood at the window, staring out at where the Moon should be, behind the clouds. It didn't take much more than a gentle tug on the bond between them to open him to the Moon's power, and the familiar trance washed over him.
This time, Duncan went with his male self as a base. Donna was still around, though, he could feel her spirit with him. He made sure to keep hold of that, it would be lonely in his head without her, and he needed to be able to dance if the interview fell through. He was sure it wouldn't, but still... Next he contemplated his body. He couldn't just go for default human, now. That would never do. There was the Moon-mark, of course. But he wanted something of the cat to stick with him, too. As he watched, his eyes took on a golden hue, and seemed to almost glow. Duncan grinned to himself, but then sighed, and dialed it back to more of a light brown, without a slit. But with the extra light-gathering ability, because that had been handy at night. He kept the enhanced muscles as well, almost as an afterthought.
Duncan thanked the Moon for its gift, and then checked the Moonstone. It was shining as brightly as he'd ever seen it.
He was very satisfied with himself as he put on Donna's outfit, and used the Moonstone to change shapes. Donna checked herself over. Faster again this time. Noticeably faster than the night before. She shrugged, it didn't seem to be doing her any harm, and she loved feeling her connection to the Moon get stronger.
At the club, everyone was eager to see Donna. Rowan had to wrangle them into some semblance of order, so that the enhancements could proceed in an orderly fashion. They still used the 'Changing Room', four girls at a time. This time, however, everyone got a long enough dose of the Moonstone's power to give them the muscles needed to support their new endowments. There had been some complaints the last time...
There were more dancers than Donna ever remembered seeing at the Blue Vixen before. They all seemed pleased with their new enhancements. Especially Kate and Zoey. Both had acquired even bigger custom bras than last time. Donna made sure to give them extra long with the Moonstone to get the muscles they'd need. In the back of her mind, Duncan was very much enjoying the show they put on while 'making sure their backs could handle it'.
Once the rush ended, Donna waited on her own in the changing room. She figured there would be a few special requests, as she hadn't seen either Liana or Ana in the main group.
Soon enough, Liana slipped quietly into the room. "Hi Donna. I know the moon isn't out yet, but... is there any chance you can make my breasts inflatable again?"
Donna nodded. "Same as last time?"
"Not quite. I had this idea, you see, air doesn't move right. But if I filled them with gel..."
"I see. How are you going to get the gel into them?"
Lana pulled a contraption from behind her back. It looked like a cross between an industrial grade cake-decorating plunger and a sport ball inflating needle. Donna inspected the tip closely. Someone had very neatly welded the parts together, and smoothed out the join.
"This is nice work," Donna commented. "Who made it for you?"
Liana pulled Donna to the door of the room, and gestured to a young blonde woman with long braided hair. Donna hadn't noticed her in the earlier rush. At Liana's wave, the slim, spindly-legged woman climbed to her feet, and limped over to the changing room on crutches.
Donna found herself puzzled by the woman's approach. Apart from the crutches, she carried herself like a dancer. Before she could ask, though, Liana was already introducing Gwen to Donna.
Instead of the questions she most wanted answered, Donna asked about the work Gwen had done. She was surprised to find out that Gwen had access to the Mechanical Engineering department's student shop at the local university, and that Gwen was a Master's student there.
They talked for a while about Gwen's hopes to work on powered exoskeletons for people who needed support, like she did now. Duncan came to the fore, and chatted about his own experiences while studying robotics.
"What's a roboticist doing here of all places?" Gwen asked.
"I could ask the same of you. But I think Liana's getting impatient with us, she's giving me the evil eye."
"Yeah! I want to try this thing out!"
"What exactly are you going to use it for, anyway?" Gwen asked.
Donna hesitated, and found she couldn't tell Gwen directly. "Watch."
Liana had already shed her top. Donna focussed on the dancer's breasts, imagining the internal chambers growing, getting lined with gel-proof skin, and finally a deeper inflation dimple forming in each nipple.
"Watch what?" asked Gwen as the changes finished.
"This." Liana slid the needle of her gel-pump into her left breasts, and pressed the plunger. Slowly but steadily her breast expanded, adding over two cup sizes before she stopped.
"But how? What?" Gwen peered at Liana's other nipple. "There's an inflation valve? How'd that get there?"
As Liana started in on her right breast, Donna raised her hand. "I did it."
"This isn't how all the others changed size, is it?"
"No. Well, and yes. Magic is real. You just saw it happen."
"But... Wow. I have so many questions. Do you only do breasts?"
Ana answered that from the doorway. "She does catgirls too. Can you change me yet?"
Donna shook her head. "Not until the Moon breaks through the clouds. Sorry."
"Aww." Ana started to slink sadly away.
"Wait. Did your panties keep their tail-hole?"
Ana nodded. "I was wondering about that, actually. Why did they stay changed, but I didn't?"
"Did you bring them tonight?"
Ana waggled her rump at Donna, showing off the tail-hole in her panties. "Figured they might be handy."
Without warning her, Donna opened the Moonstone's box. Liana saw what she was reaching for, and dashed out of the room before her modifications got lost. Ana watched her go with a puzzled expression. Then she felt her tail start to grow, and got a huge goofy grin on her face. She danced around the room as she changed, singing, "I'm going to be a catgirl". That was followed by the catchier, "I'm a catgirl, whee!" Donna closed the Moonstone's box.
Ana danced right out of the changing room, past Rowan.
Gwen was the first to speak. "Well. If I had any doubts, that... Can you help me?"
Donna blinked, taking a few moments to change gears. "I, uh..."
"I want to dance again. I've been stuck on these damn crutches for so long I'm afraid I'm going to forget how."
Donna looked pleadingly between Gwen and Rowan. "What happened?"
Rowan looked at Gwen, who closed her eyes. Rowan sighed. "She used to dance here. She was one of our best, focussed on the dancing, much like you. Then she got hit by a drunk driver on her way home from the club. It was months before she could even get up on the crutches. The physio seems to be helping though."
"It's just taking forever." Gwen added, ruefully.
"I... The Moonstone doesn't change fundamental health."
"Oh," said Gwen weakly. She seemed to crumple in on herself.
Rowan fixed Donna with a gaze fully as piercing as the huntress'. "The Moonstone doesn't normally turn people into catgirls, either. Please, just try."
Donna reached out and touched Gwen's cheek. "I'll do what I can. Where is the worst of it?"
Gwen touched her lower back. "Here. L3 was almost entirely shattered, they had to fuse L2 through L4. Something in there is pinched, too."
Donna put her hand over the indicated part of Gwen's spine. "Ugh, what a mess. I can feel it... Pain?"
Gwen sighed softly. "Every minute of every day. If you could just stop that, I'd love you forever."
"I can't do anything about your legs until the Moon's up. But..." Donna closed her eyes, and tried to feel for the current shape of Gwen's spine. She visualized what her own spine worked like, though perhaps without as much medical background as would be appropriate, and tried to impose it on Gwen. She felt the power leave her, and smiled.
Gwen squeaked slightly with alarm as she felt her spine rearrange herself, and start growing. "What did you do?"
Donna's eyes snapped open. "Oh bother. I got used to having a tail, I guess. Sorry."
It wasn't much of a tail, perhaps a foot long, and covered in skin instead of fur. Gwen wiggled her bum, and the tail swished in time. "Well... it's different. And I don't hurt." She gave Donna a huge smile. "Thanks." But when she got up to try to hug Donna, her legs gave out.
"Aw, nuts."
Donna helped her up. "Sorry. I can help with those later, once the Moon is out."
Gwen hugged Donna tight. "The pain's gone. The rest can wait."
After that, things quietened down a bit. There were so many dancers, and so many big breasts, that competition was fierce. Between her occasional dances, Donna sat with Gwen in the changing room and swapped stories. That was where she was sitting when the Moon broke free of the clouds. The room glowed with the added light.
"Time, Gwen. Ready for the main attraction?" Donna stood up and offered her a hand.
"Oh hell yes. Hit me." Gwen stood with Donna's help.
Donna let the power of the Moon wash through her, standing in the light so she would be continually refreshed. The sight of Gwen's swishing tail distracted her, making her think of a succubus. Gwen's legs swelled with muscles, gaining perfectly sculpted curves. They also got shiny and red. Her tail lengthened, and gained a spade tip as well as the same red sheen. Gwen didn't even notice until she felt her feet change into cloven hooves.
Gwen danced a few steps away from Donna. "They feel amazing. Can I go out like this? Will people freak?"
Donna grinned from ear to ear. "You like 'em?"
"Maybe not long-term... but I can DANCE! Think Rowan will let me take a shift?"
"Sure. Ana's been dancing out there as a catgirl and nobody has called the cops."
"I'm more worried about the Spanish Inquisition."
Both of them looked toward the door for a beat. Nobody sprung into the room in bright red robes, though.
"Go. Dance. Have fun."
Not long after Gwen left, Kate stuck her head in. "The Moon is up? Can we get some custom work done now?"
Donna laughed. "Sure. What do you want this time?"
While Kate mulled that over, Zoey barged past her. "I want four tits like she had that time."
"Done." All three of them watched Zoey's second set of breasts grow in, all grinning at the view.
"Thanks!" chirped Zoey, and she skipped back out again.
"I guess I'm going to have to do some work putting you two back to something more normal at closing."
Kate chuckled. "Yeah. But until then... heck, let's go with a classic. That monoboob you gave Zoey last time? Can I have two of those, one over the other?"
"Not one in front and one in back?"
Kate grinned. "I like how you think. Let's do that instead."
It didn't take long for such a willing subject to transform under Donna's gaze. Kate's already huge breasts merged together and swelled even further. While they were changing, a matching breast flowed out of her back.
Kate took a few experimental steps. "This works well. They balance each other out. I've gotta go show this off."
Donna laughed. "Have fun!"
She was about to brave the green room once more, when Ana showed up. Donna looked her over, curious as to why Ana chose to appear now. She'd vanished for most of the evening. "What's up?"
Ana looked down, twisting a paw on the floor. "I... This isn't me."
"You want to change back?"
Ana looked up at Donna in alarm. "No! Don't change me back!"
"What is it, then?"
"I know it's silly. You've made my dream come true, I'm a catgirl."
"But?"
"I'm the wrong species. Puma looks good on you, but it's just not me."
Donna chuckled softly. "I'm sure I can do something." She threw her arms wide, letting the Moon's light wash across her. "I feel like I can do anything. What would you prefer? Wolf? Deer?"
"No, still cat." Ana thrust a piece of paper into Donna's hands. It was a picture of a lynx, posed majestically in the snow. "A Eurasian Lynx. Well, a catgirl version, you know what I mean."
Donna was still examining the photo. "Wow. What a gorgeous cat. I can see why you love it. Let's see what we can do."
Donna started with the ears - they grew tufted, black-tipped. She added broad white eyebrows and white cheek-ruffs to Ana's face, giving it a more angular, squared-off look. Then the coat - spots, spots and more spots! Donna had fun with those. Ana's tail shortened by a bit, but retained its black tip.
"There. The Eurasian Lynxgirl."
Ana stared at herself in the mirror, turning back and forth. "Could you... maybe shorten the muzzle a bit?"
"Of course."
Ana flexed her forepaws, and held them out to Donna. "These are still too handy. Can you make them more pawlike?"
Donna nodded, and Ana's fingers grew stubbier. "More." Stubbier still. "Even more."
Donna took Ana's paw in her hand. "Look. It is a paw now. You don't even have a thumb to speak of. You'll be helpless. Is that really what you want?"
Ana flexed her paws, and claws slid out. "Never helpless with these. But... Can you give me thumbs but keep the look?"
That challenged Donna for a while, they tried out a variety of thumb designs. Eventually Donna was able to conceal the gap between thumb and palm well enough to satisfy Ana. When she held the thumb relaxed it would pull in close and look like part of the paw. But with a little flex it would let her grip things almost as well as a human.
"Perfect!" Ana gave Donna a fuzzy hug, then scampered off. "Oh I'm late, I'm late! I hope he's still there..."
Donna stuck her head out of the green room, but Ana had already disappeared. She asked Rowan about it. Apparently Ana had been booked into private room #3 most of the night.
Before she could think about that much, Kate and Zoey were back. Both were clamouring for more and stranger changes.
"Come on you two. It's almost closing time."
"Oh fine," pouted Kate. "Just change me back then."
While Kate was changing, Zoey wheedled. "If I win the Crazy-8s game and get the last dance, will you do one more change?"
Donna laughed. "Sure, why not."
It turned out Zoey was pretty poor at cards. She ended up on cleanup duty, instead.
After Donna had Zoey back to what was going to pass for 'normal' for the next week, Gwen approached her. "I'm going to need legs that won't get me chased out of church."
Donna grinned and nodded. "Fair enough. About the same build, though?"
"Yes! These legs are amazing. Better than I was before the accident."
Donna watched with a slight pang of regret as the beautiful red sheen departed from Gwen's legs. Before long, Gwen had perfectly normal limbs.
"Better?"
Gwen danced about the changing room, twirling on one foot. "Perfect. There's just one thing..."
Donna laughed softly. "Missing the tail already?"
"Yes... I mean no. Well, yes, but I'd best not. What I want to know is... all the girls were talking about this only lasting a week. Is that true?"
"Well, it sort of fades out over the next three days, so it's not exactly a week. But yes."
Gwen started crying. "I can't go back. Not after tonight, after dancing... Isn't there anything you can do? Please?"
Donna looked over at the door, hoping not to be overheard. Rowan was there, of course. She sighed, and looked back at Gwen. "There is a way. You heard about how silver messes with the magic, right?"
Gwen nodded, eyes still bright with tears.
"It works both ways. If you're wearing silver you won't change back, either."
"So I just have to wear a silver ring, and these," she touched her legs, "won't go away?"
"From the last quarter Moon to the first quarter. You can't take it off for any reason, ever. The reversion is slow at first, but by the new Moon it's very fast. Take it off to shower or bathe, and you'll lose everything." Donna regretted the tone she had to take, but it was necessary.
"Daunting. But thank you."
Rowan smiled at Donna. "Thank you for confirming what Heather told me earlier. And expanding on it. How fast does the change get?"
"Under an hour. Wearing silver for a couple days after the last quarter will let the girls change back overnight by," Donna paused so Duncan could do the math, "the fourth night. Assuming they want to."
Rowan laughed. "Don't worry. Most of them won't keep the full change. A lot are going to want somewhere in-between, though."
"Huh. So full Moon nights will still be profitable?"
"Very likely." Rowan handed over a huge wad of bills. "Though maybe not as much as tonight. Goodnight, you two."
Donna packed up the Moonstone, and headed out of the changing room at last. Gwen stopped her with a hand on her shoulder. Donna flinched away from the touch of silver. "Sorry. I can't bear silver any more. It breaks my link with the Moon."
Gwen stared down at the ring on her hand. "I don't want to have to wear this forever. It feels... I can't describe it, but something is wrong. Does that make any sense?"
"Take it off."
Gwen did so, and dropped it onto the table. "Oh wow. That's so much better. What's wrong with me?"
Donna laughed softly. "You liked having succubus legs tonight. I'm betting you'd like to try other changes."
Gwen nodded eagerly.
"But when you wore the ring, you didn't."
"How did you..."
"Because I feel the same way."
Gwen stared at the ring, a pained expression on her face. "But if I don't wear it, the pain... Donna, I have to."
Donna took her hand, and drew her toward the exit. "There is another way." She opened the door, and pulled Gwen out into the chilly night air. "Look up."
"What? But that will change me back right away." Gwen stared resolutely at the ground.
Donna chuckled. "The girls do talk. Do you trust me?"
"Yes," answered Gwen without hesitation.
"Then look."
Gwen looked up. "It's so beautiful," she whispered.
Donna watched, smiling, as Gwen froze in place. She'd wanted to see this for some time, and had just missed it with Zoey. A faint glow suffused the air around Gwen. Donna smiled when she saw that Gwen didn't change. Finally.
Gwen gasped, and awoke from her trance. "Where... What was that?"
Donna held out a hand to steady her. "How do you feel?"
"I feel incredible. Thank you!" Gwen pulled Donna into a hug, then kissed her full on the lips. Donna was surprised at first, then melted into what became the most passionate kiss of her life. She could feel the Moon's power build and flow through her, exulting in it. That just made it even more intense.
After an uncountable time, Gwen came up for air. Her eyes were shining. "I love you so much."
Oh, so that's where it went, thought Donna. "Gwen, I'm married."
"I still love you."
"I have kids."
"I love kids!"
Donna played her trump card, drawing on her store of Moon power to change bodily into Duncan. "I'm a man."
Gwen didn't even look startled. "I know."
