Heelping Out

Trust Machines story

"You want me to what?"

Incomprehensibly, Chris stared at his sister. Surely Jade must be joking. But apparently, she wasn't.

"I need you to become my heels for my date with Brad tonight." she repeated her crazy request pleadingly. "Please! I'll lend you my car for the entire next week!"

Actually, the deal sounded quite good. His sister Jade, at 18 one year older than him, was an honors student with a hard-working personality. When she'd been 16, their father had promised her to sponsor her first car if she brought home at least five straight A's at the end of the school year. Jade had delivered no less than eight A's, plus enough extra-cash from a part-time job at the pool so that she'd been able to obtain a used bit still good Mazda Miata.

Chris, on the other hand, was Jade's antithesis. He wasn't exactly an honors student (actually, his grades were at the opposite side of the spectrum) and he was about as hardworking as a politician was honest. Of course he'd gotten the same offer as his sister when he'd become sixteen, that is bringing home at least five B's to obtain financial support for his first car. He'd failed miserably and even if he'd achieved the impossible, there hadn't been any money from any part time jobs available to bolster the sum needed for purchasing a car which wasn't a glorified rust-heap.

Which was the reason why Jade had a car and Chris had not. Truth to tell, he didn't actually need one. If he needed to get somewhere, he was either borrowing his parents' or a friends' car. But it was summer. And having the opportunity to drive around in a convertible roadster? Why the hell not!

If only the thing Jade was demanding from him as a price wouldn't be bat-shit crazy.

"You mean I should carry you on my shoulders for your date?" he asked now, still unsure what she actually wanted. Because that what she was saying didn't make any sense. At all.

"What? No! It's as I said! I need you to become my heels!"

"How the hell do I become your heels? I'm a human! Human people are not heels. And cars are not animals. And the moon is not our house."

Jade glowered at him. "I'll use the Venn Machine on you, of course."

Chris showed a blank face. "Sorry. You've lost me. Venn what?"

Now Jade was positively ogling. "You mean you've never ever heard of the Venn Machines? Wow. Albeit... now that I think about it... there are mainly girls using the things. And they are fairly new. The one in the mall only appeared a few weeks ago..."

Now Chris raised his brow. "Mall? Do you mean this plain box with the spinning symbol on the side?"

"Oh, you know it! Perfect. But then you must know what it can do as well, don't you?"

"Um..." Chris was thinking. "Only rumors. It's supposed to be a quite sophisticated costume design thing... that's what I've heard..."

Jade giggled. "It's some kind of 'design thing', all right. But it doesn't create costumes. It changes people."

Dumbstruck Chris looked at her. "It changes people? Like what? Their hairstyle?"

Now she was laughing heartily. "No, dummy brother! It's changing people into everything you can imagine. Even-" she pointed twinkling at her feet "-heels."

For a moment, Chris' face was blank. Then he joined the laugh as well.

"Ah, that was a good joke! So tell me, what does the thing really do?"

Silently, Jade fixated him with a piercing stare.

"No, really. Tell me."

No change in her stare. Chris swallowed.

"Don't tell me you're actually serious."

"Of course I am!" Jade protested. "Why should I joke? The Venn Machines can really change people into everything. Even clothing!"

"But..." Chris was fumbling for words. "That's impossible. Magic. Sorcery doesn't exist!"

Jade simply shrugged. "Dunno how it works, only know that it works. Haven't you been at the pool last weekend? Marci told me that she saw you."

Startled by the sudden change of topic, Chris nodded.

"So... what did you think of her bikini?"

"Her swim suit?" now Chris was totally lost. What the hell was Jade driving at? "Don't know, can't really remember the pattern, but she looked nice in it, that much I still know. Why?"

Jade grinned. "Because that was me. The bikini. She'd used the Venn Machine to change me into it. And it felt totally awesome being worn!"

Chris gaped. Then shook his head. "No way. You're just messing with me."

"Pah. Then look at the dress I'll wear tonight." she motioned towards a quite nice looking piece of fabric hanging in her opened closet. "That's Marci. She's volunteered to become my dress for the date. That's why I need you, too, by the way. None of my shoes fit to her color."

"So what? There hangs a dress. Now what does that prove? That it's a human? Hah! It's a dress!"

"Oh boy!" Jade rolled her eyes. "Okay, deal: You'll come with me to the Venn Machine. There I'll change you into my heels. Then you'll see that I'm talking the truth!"

Chris snorted. "And why should I waste my time by coming with you?"

"First because besides loitering you have nothing planned for this evening anyway, and don't try to deny it. And second, because if I really lied to you about the Venn Machine's capabilities, you'll get my car for a month. So what do you say?"

Unsure, Chris regarded his sister. She absolutely loved her car. Giving it up for a week to improve a date with her boyfriend sounded at least halfway convincing. But giving it up for a month simply to mess with her brother? Unthinkable.

"Or are you chickening out?" she asked now with an evil grin and Chris narrowed his eyes.

"Okay!" he snorted. "I'll come with you. And I'll be looking forward to the month with your car!"

***************************************

The moment everything became black Chris nearly panicked. But only nearly. He hadn't really believed his sister's claims. That is, until she'd shooed him into the unobtrusive box in the mall.

The first hint that this thing was abnormal had been the three spinning planets on its side. There was no built in television and no hidden video projector, no, it had looked as if the box's smooth surface itself had simply changed complexion each moment, generating the moving image.

The next thing which had freaked him out then had been the disappearance of the entry door. It had neither flipped nor glided shut - one moment, there had been an opening, the next moment, the entry had been gone.

It had been unnatural. He was quite the technology freak and there were no image-showing walls he knew of. Even less magically appearing walls. So if the Machine was able of wielding this kind of magic, then what about the Jade's impossible claims?

The interface with the bubbles which had popped up in front of him hadn't done anything to disperse his fears. He'd seen his sister through it, happily pushing the interface's bubbles on her side.

"Um..." he had said nervously. "Jade, I think I'm not so sure about this anymore..."

Jade, on the other hand, had only grinned. "Oh, why? After all, I've already decided upon a really cute pair of heels!"

And that sentence and that grin had been the last things he'd heard or seen. Because in the next moment, he'd found himself blind and deaf, unable to move his body. He hadn't been breathing anymore, either. And somehow, he had felt as if he had been split in... well, two.

Oh my God! he contemplated now utterly stunned. That's impossible! That... can't be! Am I really just... a pair of shoes now?

His question was answered a few seconds later when he suddenly felt his body, or rather his bodies, being touched and moved.

***************************************

"Hm...nice." Jade murmured grinning as she mustered her brother's shape. He was a now a pair of blue three-inch pumps with exactly the right coloration to fit to her dress... Marci.

"Thanks for helping me out, brother." she chuckled and gave each of the pumps a short peck. Then she stored them in her bag and walked back to her car.

The entire drive back, she was whistling happily, shedding the occasional glance to her new shoes.

At home, Jade stored Chris next to her bed and then started her preparation for the upcoming date, beginning with a long bubble bath. She was taking her time because she wanted to look percect for Brad, but finally, it was Marci's and Jade's time.

Giggling, Jade took Marci from her hook and stroked her friend's cloth. Then she slipped into the dress. Marci was a perfect fit and Jade was marveling at her friend's feel on her skin. She'd worn many dresses in her life, but none had fit that well and felt that good. She did a few cheerful twirls in front of the mirror before she smirked in her brother's direction.

"Okay, now let's put you on..." she mumbled as she sat down on her bed and gingerly slipped the left heel on. Just like Marci, he was a perfect fit and the right heel followed suit.

Jade stood up and took a few testing steps on her brother. He was feeling great, the most comfortable high heels she'd ever worn, and as she strode in front of the mirror again, she could not suppress a delighted yelp. The dress was clinging to her body like a second skin, accentuating every curve but without showing too much, and the heels complimented its coloration, plus making her legs looking sensational.

She struck a few poses and then started applying make-up.

Brad won't have a chance! she thought as she took her final shape in, waiting for her date to show up.

***************************************

Chris didn't know when it had happened, but somehow he'd drifted to sleep after Jade (probably?) had put him down again. There had been no further sensations except the occasional rub against what he supposed was the bag she'd carried with her, and the utter absence of sensory input had let him daze off.

He didn't know for how long he'd slept either when suddenly a touch woke him again. He felt Jade's hand again, he felt her lifting him up and then, he felt something move into him, filling one of his two bodies out. He'd have gasped if he'd still have possessed a mouth, but he didn't and so he was constrained to silent marvel as Jade's foot slid into him. Chris could feel her foot's warmth against his inanimate skin.

The same happened to his other shape and it felt to him as if he was giving her feet a hug with his whole body... err, bodies. He was still trying to deal with those feelings when there was abruptly a massive weight pressing down on him. At first, it was distributed on each of his two bodies equally, but then the weight was lifted from one of the two. He felt this half of himself move through the air until it hit the ground again, and then it was his other half's turn.

All in all it wasn't unpleasant. Hugging her feet actually felt good. And while the weight-bearing required some getting used to, it wasn't painful.

Well... he thought. If that's how being shoes feels... then I think I can live with being those for an evening.

And then, the surface below his soles changed and Chris had to revise his assessment.

***************************************

"You're beautiful, Jade." Brad said appreciatively as his girlfriend strode towards him, her heels click-clacking on the boardwalk's concrete.

"Oh, thank you Brad!" she cooed and gave him a hug with a deep kiss. "I've had some friends and family helping me with my outfit tonight."

"You had, haven't you?" he asked rhetorically and grinned. "And I think they've been quite successful. Have they helped you choosing your clothes?"

Jade smirked mysteriously. "Something like this." she said. I better not tell Brad that at our date tonight we won't be alone... technically.

And giggling, she placed herself on Brad's car's front passenger seat.

Brad took her to dinner in a fancy restaurant and after they'd finished, he stood up and motioned towards the dance floor.

"May I have the dance?" he asked while he offered her his hand. Jade only smiled.

"You may." she said and stood up as well.

***************************************

Oh no, what's she doing now? Chris asked himself in his dark prison as he felt his wearer moving on him again. But this time, the movement was different than before. It was slower, and there was a pattern... just like...

Great. he contemplated. She's dancing on me. Well... at least the dancing floor seems to be quite smooth... thank God for small wonders.

He had spent the last hour dreading the end of Jade's stay at the restaurant... or where ever she just was. She'd constantly wiggled her toes inside him and the movement against his skin plus her body's warmth had prevented him from falling to sleep again.

Her first steps wearing him had been okay. But that had been the case because she'd been walking on her room's and their home's carpet. Only when the surface had changed to that of concrete he'd realized what a blessing carpet was.

Every of her steps on concrete had slammed his shape down on the hard, unyielding surface. And not only that, by his soles' grinding over the solid underground, a little bit of his body was chafed off with each step. It wasn't painful, but it wasn't pleasant either. And so each time she'd apparently walked on concrete, he'd silently hoped for her to reach a softer surface as swiftly as possible.

And now she was dancing. At least the floor was smooth enough that there was little to no grinding. Actually, it was quite pleasant, but his previous ordeals hadn't left Chris in the mood to try to enjoy his current form. He simply hoped that it would be over soon.

***************************************

Happily, Jade snuggled herself closer to her boyfriend. The dance had been a blast and what had followed had been even better. Her clothes were scattered all over Brad's apartment, but she'd made sure to put Marci on a hanger and store Chris neatly below her. Fortunately, she'd gone for a 16 hours transformation with both of them, otherwise they'd have popped up at an... inopportune moment.

Silently, she thanked both of them for helping her out and then closed her eyes again, relishing in the warmth the body next to her was providing.

***************************************

Chris blinked. Wait a moment. He could blink!

Slowly, Chris moved his fingers and toes.

"Yes! I'm human again!" he exclaimed, then looked around. Okay, he was standing in his home's floor, amidst the shoes, so that's probably where Jade had discarded him after her date.

His face darkened dangerously. Jade! The little beast... and cursing, he jumped up the stairs.

***************************************

*WHAM*

Startled, Jade looked up from her homework assignment towards the door where her brother had appeared. Right, it had been 16 hours since the change, so he must have transformed back, but why was he looking so furious...?

"Hi, Chris." she said carefully. "I want to thank you for yesterday again. The date went really-"

"Fuck you, bitch!" Chris snarled back and Jade's face became paper-white in shock. Of course they were bickering now and then, which pair of siblings didn't, but normally, they were fairly close. And they were hardly insulting each other.

"You tricked me!" he spat. "Being your shoes totally sucked! 'Feels awesome being worn' my ass! I tell you, that's the last favor I have done for you for a long time!"

Desperately, Jade tried bringing her beating hard under control. It sucked? But that... that couldn't be! She had been Marci's bikini last week, and it had been awesome, like a never ending hug!

"But... but..." she stammered. "That's not how it should be! Being clothing really feels nice! At least the clothing I have been, that is, Marci's bikini! And I've talked to her over the phone before. She was telling me how great it felt for her to be worn be me!"

"Yeah?" Chris asked angrily. "And have you been shoes before?"

"Well, no..."

"There you see! Perhaps being a dress or bikini feels nice, but being shoes absolutely doesn't!"

"Chris, please!" Jade blurted out now, tears welling in her eyes. "You have to believe me! I would never have changed you into my shoes if I would've known that being shoes sucks!"

***************************************

Astounded, Chris tried to battle his upset emotions back under his control. He hadn't wanted to make his sister cry! During his time as a shoe, he'd persuaded himself that this must have been a deliberate ploy by his sister. And so he'd simply released his frustration at her once she'd been in range.

But now he was seeing her across him, short of dissolving into teary blubber, and suddenly he wasn't so sure any more about her shrewishness.

"Okay, I'm sorry for yelling at you." he said, looking her in the eyes. "But please tell me - did you really not know that being shoes isn't pleasant?"

Jade shook her head violently. "I swear to you, I didn't know." she sniveld and Chase sighed.

"All right, then... I'm really sorry for going nuts on you. So... everything's peachy again?"

"No, it's not!" Jade wailed and now the tears were indeed streaming. "I had such a fun time yesterday, but you didn't... worse, my fun was the cause of your bad experience."

"Oh, dear..." swiftly, Chris hugged his blubbering sister. "It was an accident, all right? Such things happen sometimes. You apologized, everything's alright." he gently stroked her hair to comfort her. "Shh, it's okay, no harm done."

"Okay..." Jade sniveled again and wiped the tears from her face.

"Although-" Chris said with a small smile, letting go of her hair, "-the next time you want to 'borrow' me for a date, I'll probably say no."

"Can't really fault your decision..." Jade responded with a small smile of her own, then mischievously adding, "Although I'd think that you'd probably make an even better dress than Marci... or bikini than me. I know you've had a crush on Marci for years. Maybe she would like a new bikini to go swimming with me next week..."

To that, Chris could only laugh.
