Chelsea stepped through the doors of the convention center with a rush of excitement.
She had just turned 18 and graduated high school and was looking forward to starting college in the fall. Her grades, particularly in the science classes, had gotten her in to her first choice of school.
Before that however, the start of summer brought her a chance to go back to her childhood. The local anime and game convention was happening that weekend. She had gone to the convention for the last three years but this was the first time she had put together a costume for it. She was a big fan of Digimon as a kid and as a result decided to dress as Kari in her season two outfit. Kari was her favorite character and her hair was the right color for her to pull off the look without a wig.
The first day of the convention was every bit as fun as she remembered from previous years. She watched screenings of new series, played a bunch of old video games in the game hall, checked out the merchandise stands, and took pictures with other cosplayers. She had gotten many compliments on her outfit, which was a pleasant surprise to her seeing as it was the first one she put together.
The day went fast and soon night was falling and Chelsea was beginning to make her way to the exit to head home. She was absent-mindedly thinking about what she would do when she came back tomorrow when she heard someone speak to her.
"Wow, that is a really good costume. I didn't see too many Digimon costumes today."
Chelsea looked up to see a young man about her age with a camera around his neck and a large book under his left shoulder.
"Thanks, it's the first costume I've done for this con," Chelsea replied. The number of compliments she had gotten that day was a new experience for her as she was used to blending into the background at work and school.
"Well you did a good job on it, if you held still enough I'd swear you were a figurine of Kari," he said which slightly flustered Chelsea."If it's not too much trouble, would you mind if I took a picture? I'm putting together an album for the event."
Chelsea was a little tired by that point and wanted to rest up for the next day, but she had taken plenty of pictures that day so she figured there was no harm in one more. There wasn't anyone else in that part of the convention center so she easily found a spot to stand and pose for the camera. After a few seconds the guy put the camera to his face, focused the lense, and clicked the shutter.
The flash that came next seemed brighter than any from the other cameras she had seen that day and it had a noticeable blue color. Chelsea didn't blink despite the overwhelming brightness. She brought her hand up to wipe her eyes....or she would have, except her arm didn't move at all from how it was posed for the picture. Before she could ponder this however her indignation at the brightness of the flash compelled her to yell at the guy for not warning her....except her mouth and vocal chords didn't move and no sound was formed.
She found that she was suddenly unable to move a muscle. She couldn't move from her pose, she couldn't speak, she couldn't even blink. She soon realized that she didn't even seem to be breathing and her heart, which should have been going crazy from the fear that was quickly mounting in her mind, was producing no noticeable pulse.
While Chelsea was panicking about these terrifying realizations, she suddenly noticed that the room around her seemed to be getting bigger. She wondered if she was imagining it because of the shock of her predicament.
Suddenly, the sensation stopped but nonetheless left the room around her seeming huge. The guy lowered his camera and looked at her for a moment. The way he was now staring at her made her very uncomfortable but she still found that she could not speak or move away to get it to stop.
The guy suddenly put his camera all the way down and began walking toward her. As he got closer, he appeared more and more giant. When he was finally right in front of her all she could see were his feet.
It was then that it dawned on her. Everything else wasn't bigger, she was smaller.
While her mind was racing trying to figure out how this was possible. The man with the camera crouched down and Chelsea was horrified to see his hand moving toward her. She wanted to run from the approaching hand but her body remained inexplicably locked in the pose she had assumed for the picture.
His hand closed around her and lifted her off the ground. Despite this, her body remained rigidly locked in her pose and she strangely felt no pain from the pressure of his grip. In fact, her sense of touch seemed to have been dulled, she barely noticed any sensation from the fingers wrapped around her and she vaguely felt a strange weight beneath her, as if there were something attached to her feet.
He then opened his hand and looked Chelsea over. She was mortified by the way he was now looking at her, as if she were a piece of candy he was about to devour. He had to be the one who had done this to her. She wanted to angrily demand to know what he had done but her mouth was as immobile as the rest of her body.
He then began walking, carrying Chelsea with him. He was moving away from the exit Chelsea had been moving to, heading to the convention center hotel. She could do nothing but ponder what he planned to do to her there.
After a ride up in the elevator and a walk down the hall, he arrived at his room and inserted the key to enter. Once inside, he tossed his bag on the bed and set Chelsea down on the counter in front of the hotel room's sink. What Chelsea saw in the mirror behind it finally gave her the terrifying truth of her situation.
Staring back at her was a small figure that looked as if it was made of plastic bearing the appearance of the very character she had spent the day dressed as. A small circular base had materialized beneath her feet, giving her the appearance of one of the figures she'd seen at the merchandise stands earlier.
"...if you held still enough I'd swear you were a figurine of Kari." These words now had a sinister new meaning.
