Mary closed the front door after a long day at school, throwing her bag to the floor. It had been a week since she had last seen her younger sister Daniel, and even though she had a bang of regret for what she had done ii was a little late to and fix things. A pissed off witch is not something you want to free. Regardless of that however, Mary was thirsty from the hot weather. A pang of thirst tickled the back of her throat so Mary went to the kitchen.
“Hey sis” her youngest sister called from the dining room table.
“Hi Mary” her sister Daniel called from beside Cindy.
“Hey Cindy, hey Mary. Cindy, how’s it going, still working on that puzzle?” Mary asked as she walked over to the fridge to pull out a bottle of water. She felt like something was off, but the college girl associated it to just being thirst is all.
“I did it sis!” Cindy called out.
“Did wha….” The older girl looked over at the table an d hesitated. Sitting right next to Cindy was Daniel, back to normal and definitely not a blank puzzle.
“Just noticed?” Daniel question, a wicked smile on her lips. “Miss me?”
“I, uh, have, homework! Right homework. Have to go to my room now. Bye you too” Mary basically bolted from the room, a sudden need to get as far away from her sister as possible. Daniel didn’t even bat an eye as her older sister ran, but her eyes did follow. Mary made it across the house and dashed into her room, bolting the door behind her. She knew she had messed up. No matter how jealous she had been of her sisters power she definitely had gone overboard there. Finally, in the safety of her own room, she release all her pent up breath.
“Sis, why did you run? I missed you so much. You never came to visit me.” the innocence of the words that came out of Daniel’s mouth were crooked by the malice that filled her words.. Daniel glanced back. Her sister was in the room with her, just sitting there on Mary’s bed, watching her.
“Uh, ah” The oldest could only stutter out. Her hands traced paths up and down the door behind her, looking for a handle that no longer existed.
“Oh my bad, is this a bad time?” Daniel questioned sarcastically. “Don’t worry I can help you with that”. The bolt clicked back, much to Mary’s surprise. But what also surprised her was her bedroom door, suddenly an inch away from her face. “Ugahah...” sounded from Mary’s as the door, not even slowing as it hit her, opened completely flat against the wall.
“Hey Mary! Where did you go? It’s been too fast for you to just disappear on me like that. Are you here” Daniel pulled back the door, revealing a poster like Mary plastered against the wall. Mary’s eyes could only follow her sister. Her hands dug behind the flattened girl, peeling her off the wall like a sticker before bringing Mary to her own bed. “Let’s have a girl to girl talk now. It’s not like your going anywhere.”
“First let’s talk about what you did to me. Not very nice right? Imagine if Cindy hadn’t been so smart, I would have been stuck as a pile of shredded paper forever. IT wasn’t like you were going to help me , were you.” the last sentence was filled with malice, sending a chill down Mary’s spine. “Now the real question is what to do to you, my ‘dear’ sister.”
Mary’s eyes danced around the room, looking for an escape that was never going to be there. Panic filled her. Is this the end? Was all she could think.\
“Oh don’t worry Mary, I’m not that even” Daniel responded, as if reading her thoughts. “And yes I am reading your thoughts,. And no I can’t do it all the time, just when I’m touching someone. I have something a little more appropriate in mind. You like puzzles right?”
Uh oh
“Yes, uh oh is right. I’m going to have fun folding you into a piece of origami. How about a frog? No? Crane it is then” Daniel picked up her sister and started to carry her over to Mary’s desk. She draped her older sister over the desk, her head and feet touching the floor on either end. “Well then, that’s a lot more material than we need. So what shall it be, a little snip snip maybe?”
Please no Mary begged through her thoughts, hoping that her witch of a sister could still hear her.
“Again, I’m not that evil Mary. Even though I am having a lot of fun taunting you like this. Is this why you act this way sometimes?” Daniel questioned her sister, not really expecting an answer as she folder Mary up like a towel. “Now where were we? Oh right, origami! But I think you’re still a little too thick sis, have you been gaining weight?” the witch prodded her victim like one would do to a fat person.
Fine Daniel, you had your fun, just get it over with Mary had had enough with the taunting, her sister could do her worse to her, as long as she just got on with it.
“Fine fine, don’t have to be so pent up about it. It’s not like your going to get FLATTENED again!” Daniel accented the word flattened with a WHAM from a large, heavy, old book. “There perfect!” her sister was nothing more than a six by six sheet of squashed human, with her face plastered across the front. Mary could only accept her fate as Daniel began to fold her. Pieces of her began to turn, with a hard edge following to create numbing creases throughout her body. Here and there, again and again. The process repeated dozens of times, with Mary soon losing track of what went where on her body. Some parts of her seemed to now rise of the table, other hung parallel. It was almost too much to keep track.
Eventually Daniel finished her master plan, putting the folded girl down on the desk and re-positioning a nearby desk mirror to point directly towards Mary. In a mess of browns and other colors was a perfectly formed paper crane. “Now Mary, this isn’t the punishment, just so you are aware. What you did to me quantifies a little more than that. So here it is. You must me unfolded completely for the spell to be undone. I’ll do you a favor and leave you somewhere in the open so somebody can find you, but I leave no promises.” Daniel pinched a piece of her sister, picking her up and carrying her out of the room. Mary was dangled over the floor, a massive height compared to the little paper crane. Daniel brought her back to the kitchen, resting her on the counter before taking her place next to her sister.
“Where is Mary?” Cindy asked innocently.
“Oh you know, here and there. But don’t you worry about it.” Daniel rubbed her sisters head, frizzing up her hair a little in the process.
“Sis!” Cindy wined to her. She knew what was up.
“It’s fine”
“Sissss”
“Please let me have this”
“No”
Daniel gave up, there was no winning with her younger sister. “Fine you win” she said, dejectedly. She got up from the table slowly, walking back to her folded up sister. “You are so lucky Cindy likes you, I’ve would have left you there for at least a month”. She pinched two corners of the crane, and with a less than gentle pull, she unfolded the paper. Suddenly the sheet began to twist and twirl, bulging out in different directions. Curves started to show, a face here, a hand there. Blink and you would miss it as Mary popped back into three dimensions and unto a mess on the floor.
“No hard feelings Mary?” Daniel asked.
“Um, no. None at all” Mary responded hesitantly.
“Who’s turn is it to make dinner?” Cindy called from the table.
