Elise and Victoria Stone sat side by side with their backs and prayer-tied arms resting against the thick trunk of a tree. The flickering amber candlelight from the windows of Elizabeth Andrews’ secluded country home could be seen in the near distance and constantly reminded the sisters of her presence.

Six months of slavery for the Stone sisters had passed since their abduction at the hands of Elizabeth, and in that time the two young thieving sisters had been subjected to numerous torturous and humiliating punishments at the hands of their self-proclaimed mistress; from exhaustive pony training and races on the bridle path of a fellow slaver’s nearby ranch, to being the focus of degrading and embarrassing public exhibition galleries, as well as endless sessions of forced pleasure and ceaseless hours of extreme physical torture.

Slowly, however unwillingly, the Stone sisters had become accustomed their new forced way of life, their tortures and humiliations now feeling more like routine as they became increasingly desensitised to their perpetual pain and shame…

Together the sisters were looking up at the night sky full of stars above them. They had been sat outside for hours, it was a common thing now for Elizabeth to treat them to a form of respite every now and again, something that the sisters were grateful of but didn’t wholly understand the reasons for. Nevertheless, the sisters would always lap up the half-freedom granted to them.

“It feels nice not to be gagged for a change,” said Victoria, breaking a long silence of introspection.

“Yeah, but I’m sick of your voice already so be quiet.”

“Aww, really?” asked Victoria with a small hint of genuine concern.

“Of course not,” replied Elise with a half-smile.

“She gags us so often that it’s insane.”

“Yeah, the bitch is one hell of a gag whore.”

The sisters shared a moment of laughter together before falling silent again. Edging closer to her older sister, Victoria tilted her head and rested her temple on Elise’s shoulder. Elise, having turned her attention away from the stars of the night sky, had taken to staring at the thick leather cuffs around her ankles bound together by two heavy chain links. Both Elise and her sister Victoria had been bound in the same way; their ankles cuffed, their legs bound with tight leather straps and their arms bound in prayer ties behind their backs. The discomfort of the prayer tie and the sight of her bound legs played on Elise’s mind and brought a memory from six months earlier into focus…

“I’m so sorry Victoria…” said Elise in almost a whisper.

“Don’t Elise, not tonight.”

“I have to, tonight, tomorrow and every day thereafter and for as long as I’m allowed to speak. I can’t miss any opportunity to apologise to you because... you said you’d never forgive me. So you have to know that I’m so sorry.”

“Yeah, I said that, but I also told you that I took it back.” Victoria’s voice was pricked with frustration and aggravation. Knowing that she needed to remain calm for her sister and her own emotional state, she took a deep breath, calmed herself and continued in an attempt to offer a degree of solace. “Listen, dad split, mom dated a cop and got burned so we ran, we had no choice, the only life we could lead was the one we had been taught. We both knew it was the wrong thing to do but what else could we have done, where could we have gone?”

“Mexico…” said Elise, trying to lighten her own mood.

“After Elizabeth I blamed you for everything. Everything was your fault, your fault we took to the road in the first place, your fault that we began robbing people to have the money to live, your fault we were wanted felons and your fault that Elizabeth tortured us daily for months on end.”

“I-”

“-but then I heard you crying one night. I’d never heard you cry before so it took me a while to process it, and then it hit me and the blame in my heart shifted from you and on to our mom. Everything is her fault to me now, she ran risks of her own accord and we had to go along with them, she chose to date a cop knowing what could and did happen, she drove dad away and left us alone to lead a life we didn’t want.” Noticing the frustration in her voice and the sharp edges of her words, Victoria fell silent once more, this time swallowing hard and turning her attention back to the stars above her, lifting her head  from her sister’s shoulder before continuing. “Hating her has helped me to numb the pain these past six months...”

Hearing her sister admit to the pain was something that Elise hated to hear, she still blamed herself for the choice she had made from the options that Elizabeth had given her. To Elise it was nobody’s fault but her own that she had damned her sister to six months of pain and humiliation, in her heart and in her mind she longed to have any other life than the one she was living, both for herself and for her sister.

“I’d give anything to be back on the road.” said Elise, eventually.

“I wouldn’t.”

“What?! Why not?”

“We were dirty, tired and hungry all of the time, we could never stay in one place for long and we were too paranoid to check into hotels. In fact, I’m surprised our targets didn’t smell us coming. In five years how many warm meals did we have? How many sleepless nights did we spend in stolen cars, how many new friends did we make and how many times were we able to take a shower?”

“It wasn’t-”

“-Rhetorical.”

“… that bad.” Elise processed her sister’s words and recalled what life on the road had been like. It had been rough, cleanliness and a comfortable night’s sleep had ceased to exist once they had gone on the run, but still, unlike her sister, Elise had fond memories of their time together on the road. “It wasn’t that bad though, right? Remember when we hit Lola McGavin? We tied her up, took a shower and when we came back she’d made it into the back garden and down the alleyway.”

Victoria spluttered a sudden chuckle as her mind relived the event in question that she had forgotten. “It did have its moments I guess.”

“Yeah, she did really well for someone in such a strict hogtie…”

“Dragging that heavy coffee table behind her too.”

“Oh god, yeah! How did she even get that through the door?”

The sisters laughed together again, as the slivers of light from their past life came rushing back to them in a surge of fond memories.

“And what about all of the things we’ve seen?” asked Elise rhetorically “The Golden Gate bridge, Colorado, the Yellowstone volcano, Waterfire in Rhode Island and the Manhattan skyline… we’ve seen more than most will in their lifetimes thanks to that life.”

“I do feel lucky to have seen all of those wonderful places Elise, but with Elizabeth I have the life I’ve wanted to reclaim since mom got burned. We’re able to sleep with a roof over our head now, we’re able to shower and bathe on a regular basis and we’re fed warm meals, albeit in the most humiliating and painful of ways, but I think I’m happier this way. In the beginning I wasn’t, but now, now that I’m used to this life, I don’t think I want it to end.”

“Oh, god you’re being serious.”

“I’m not scared of her anymore. I used to be, she was so cruel and her methods were terrifying. But to me, the humiliation and pain she has put us through is what we deserve, we stole from those people, we scared and hurt them, it’s only right that we be punished for that… plus, I think she loves us.”

“You’ve lost me now.”

“Remember when we met Paul and Chantal and Elizabeth had you race Chantal around the bridle path and you tripped and fell.”

“Ugh! Don’t fucking remind me of that.”

“I saw her when you fell. I saw a reaction in her that she couldn’t hide. It didn’t last long but she was concerned for you, genuinely concerned, she tried to mask it immediately, but I saw it so plainly.”

“So concerned that she beat me for hours that night?”

“Well you know she doesn’t like to lose…”

“I’m going to agree to disagree with you on that one. She doesn’t love us and I damn sure don’t love her and don’t have anything to thank her for. She’ll sell us to other slavers eventually and we may even be separated.”

“Maybe you’re right Elise, but I don’t think she will. I know the day we met her she told you that sisters sell for a good price, and that the choice she gave you was between sending us to jail or keeping us as slaves. You chose the only option you could, you kept us together thinking that being her slaves would give us a better chance of one day escaping, or at least a better chance than jail would give us. But unless we escape I don’t think she is going to give us up.”

Elise was silent for a moment, a thought had occurred to her while Victoria had been talking that she had needed to process and it wasn’t a comfortable thought to entertain. “Victoria, if we could escape, if we had the chance to run and get back on the road, would you take it?”

“With the other option being to stay with Elizabeth in the life we have now?”

“Yeah. Would you come with me or would you stay here with her?”

“Elise, I… don’t know how to answer that. I- well, if you had the chance to escape without me, would you take it?”

“No” replied Elise surely and without any hesitation.

“Then this is the only way I know how to answer you. Listen to me carefully Elise and look at me… If ever the opportunity arises for you to escape I want you to take it.”

Elise couldn’t hide the flushing of her cheeks or the tears which instantly welled up in her eyes. Her chest had felt as if it had been immediately crushed upon hearing her sister’s words. Elise’s body was cold and yet burning hot, her throat felt as if it were closing up and threatening to choke her.

With a jerk of her head Elise turned away from her sister and hung her head with her eyes closed, her tears streaming down her skin and into her lap.

“I’m so sorry Elise.”

“I-… I think- that I prefer you with a gag…”

In the distance Elizabeth Andrews was walking towards both Elise and Victoria, holding two harness gags, collars and chains by her side. It was time for the Stone sisters to be put to bed, silently.

“Looks like you’re gonna get your wish Elise.”
