Pit stood alone in the Endless Meadow with his eyes closed, head hung and hands pressed together in front of his chest. He was praying, searching for a trace of Lady Palutena, the all-seeing Goddess of Light.
Three days ago the Underworld army had invaded the earth and while doing battle against a marauding battalion of Underworld troops Pit had suddenly lost his telepathic connection with Lady Palutena. Losing the connection with Lady Palutena also meant that Pit had lost his angelic powers including the power of flight and before Pit knew it he had found himself hurtling towards the infested and burning city below. Pit had closed his eyes and braced his body for the immanent and agonizing impact, only for him to open them moments later to find himself standing alone in the middle of a mysterious and seemingly endless field which he then dubbed the Endless Meadow.
It probably wasn’t called the Endless Meadow, it probably wasn’t even endless but Pit hadn’t wanted to walk that far to find out if it was, so instead he did the only thing he could think of doing; pray.
It had taken him three days, but finally the familiar ethereal voice of Lady Palutena filled his mind and heart…
“Pit, is that you?”
“Lady Palutena! Yes, I’m here! It’s me!”
“I’m so glad that you were able to find me Pit, the Underworld forces have defeated and overthrown both the Earth and the Heavens! They were led by Hades himself; the other gods never stood a chance!”
“Hades?! He came back fast!”
“I know. No one told me that we were due a sequel to our last game so soon, people must have really enjoyed our last adventure…”
“Maybe… Wait, if the Earth and the Heavens were defeated and overthrown then how did you escape?”
“I didn’t, Hades stormed into my chambers and took me hostage. I’m currently bound and gagged somewhere in his Underworld castle.”
“That’s horrible! Wait, if you’re gagged then how are you speaking to me?”
“We’re communicating through telepathy; I don’t need my mouth for that.”
“Hmm… fair point. So how do I rescue you? I need to find some way out of this meadow, and how did I even get here in the first place?”
“When Hades abducted me he temporarily severed my connection with you, the only thing I could think to do was to transport you somewhere safe and the safest place I could think of were the Elysian Fields.”
“Oh, the Elysian fields… right.”
“But now that our connection is operational again I can get you out of there. Hold on!”
Upon hearing Lady Palutena’s words, Pit opened his eyes to see the endless meadow of the Elysian Fields glow with a light brighter than anything he had seen before and second later found himself surrounded by sunlight and clouds. The heavenly sight filled his heart with joy and his soul with courage as he grasped his weapons in his hands.
“Woohoo! Have no fear Lady Palutena, Pit is here! Or at least I will be when I get there… all I need to do is locate the portal to the Underworld, storm Hades’ castle and-”
“-wait Pit!”
“What is it Lady Palutena?”
“The Earth is suffering Pit; you must liberate the human race from the evil and destruction that has befallen them, in doing so you may find allies to aid you on your quest.”
“But aren’t you suffering too Lady Palutena, I mean, you did say you were a little tied up over there…”
“Not so much actually. My gag is Calliope brand silk and tastes like blackberries.”
“Uhh… and the rope?”
“The most elegant Persephone brand golden thread.”
“I see, I guess I have time to save the world after all then... But when I’m done I’m coming to save you Lady Palutena!…”
Thak you, Pit. Get ready, I can see a city in the distance that needs your help.”
“You mean that ominous towering pillar of black smoke? No kidding…”
“I’ll try and land you as close to the city’s gate as I can. Be careful though Pit, the city is heavily guarded by Underworld forces.”
“Okay! Time for less chit-chat and more monster splat!”
“Good luck! Oh, and Pit?...”
“Yes, Lady Palutena?”
“I can read your mind remember, so stop trying to visualise my personal predicament! You have a job to do: save the Earth, the Heavens and me, clear your mind, we can’t have you being distracted…”
“Ohhh, umm, I wasn’t, ehm, I mean not that I wouldn’t, but I….uhhhh”
“Ugh… I’m so erasing your memories of this later…”
“You can do that?”
“Probably…”
