The first light of the softly burning horizon was a familiar sight to Abney; long ago she had spent countless summers staring out into the distance, watching the crystal-black night sky give way to deep hues of cold blues, warming purples and sensuous reds until the light of day was certain and sure enough to hold its dominion over the clear oceans, rolling hills and sturdy mountains of the land she called home…
In her youth Abney had never missed a sunrise and today, like any other day, would be no exception; for it was the only luxury her mistress permitted her to have. With wide eyes wet in adoration of the beauty they beheld, Abney continued to stare out towards the ever-glowing horizon and the perpetually shifting shades of thick ethereal colours which coated the sky.
Proud and prevailing, the dominant clouds of copious amber, which had risen from the flame-lit horizon, continued their ascension into the red, purple and black sky before swallowing their darkness and absences. Abney looked on as one by one, the shimmering sequins of light, which had adorned the night sky, flickered out of existence and into obscurity; biting down on her gag and gripping the chains that held her arms over her head within her fists, Abney raised her head and her gaze and dared to follow the light into the infinite expanse of the heavenly realm above.
The dry blood and thin scabs of Abney’s lacerations cracked with her body as she traced the ever-reaching dawn with her tear-filled eyes…
Finally unified, the profuse amber sky readily gave way to the light of the sun which had risen silently in the distance below the perfect aurora. A cloudless pale blue sky accompanied the sun and the heat which had since flooded the land and soothed Abney’s re-opened wounds.
The world had awoken with an intense and intimate beauty; a beauty that Abney wished she could possess, a beauty that Abney hoped her mistress could see whenever she looked into her eyes.
Abney continued to stare at the early morning sky until the light of the sun forced her to avert her gaze. The day was now upon her and from this point onwards it would draw on, grow weary and dark, and outstay its welcome until the night drew in to take the day’s final breath of light… in that time, Abney would know love again as she had done during the dawn, in the sweet pain and torturous caresses at the hands of her mistress.
