The night air hung heavy with anticipation as Phil made his way through the dense forest. Twigs snapped beneath his feet, and moonlight filtered through the canopy above, casting eerie shadows across the forest floor. He'd been with this group for three months now, watching them perform minor enchantments that defied explanation, levitating objects, healing small wounds instantly, conjuring fire from nothing.
Magic was real. And Phil wanted it.
He hadn't told them his true intentions, of course. He'd played the part of the devoted follower, attending their meetings in that old Victorian house on the edge of town, reciting their strange prayers, and drinking their bitter herbal concoctions. They called themselves "The Children of the Ancient Way," and while the others seemed content with the paltry demonstrations of power they were shown, Phil knew there had to be more.
Much more.
Last week, Eliza, the woman who seemed to lead their little group, had pulled him aside after their usual gathering.
"You've proven yourself dedicated to our path, Philip," she'd said, using his full name as she always did. "We believe you're ready for the Blessing of Power."
Phil had struggled to contain his excitement. "What does that entail?"
"Meet us in the clearing at midnight on the full moon. Wear natural fibers like cotton, linen, or wool. Nothing synthetic." She'd smiled then, a knowing look that made something cold slither down Phil's spine. "The Blessing will change everything."
Now, as he approached the clearing, Phil could see a group of at least fifty people stood in a circle around a design etched into the earth. It was massive, perhaps twenty feet across, and seemed to pulse with a faint green luminescence.
"Philip," Eliza called, extending her hand. "You've come."
"I wouldn't miss it," he replied, taking in the scene. Everyone wore robes with deep hoods, their faces partially obscured. "What happens now?"
Eliza's smile widened. "Now, you receive the power you seek."
The circle parted to allow him access to the glowing symbol on the ground. It was made of intricate spiraling lines interwoven with strange angular characters he couldn't identify. The green light pulsed like a heartbeat, growing stronger with each throb.
"Step into the center," Eliza instructed. "The symbol will recognize your desire and grant you power beyond your imagination."
Phil hesitated for just a moment. There was something about this that felt... wrong. Different from their usual rituals. But wasn't this exactly what he'd been waiting for? Access to real power?
He stepped forward, placing one foot and then the other onto the glowing design.
Immediately, he felt a strange tingling sensation racing up from the soles of his feet. He looked down and tried to move, but his feet were fixed firmly to the ground as if they'd been nailed there.
"Wait, what's happening?!" Panic rose in his throat as the green light intensified, now swirling around his legs like glowing smoke. "I don't think I want this, I want to back out!"
Eliza's face darkened, all pretense of warmth vanishing. "It's far too late for that, Philip. The binding has begun."
The other robed figures began to chant in a language Phil didn't recognize, their voices rising and falling in rhythmic cadence. The green energy responded, surging upward around his body, constricting around him like a luminous serpent.
"You said this would give me power!" Phil shouted, struggling fruitlessly against his invisible bonds.
"Oh, it will give power," Eliza replied. "Just not to you."
The energy tightened, and Phil felt his clothes begin to tear away from his body. The sound of ripping fabric filled his ears as his jeans, t-shirt, and jacket were shredded by the magical force. But instead of leaving him naked, the green energy coalesced around him, weaving itself into a flowing black gown that settled over his body.
"What the fuck!" he screamed, looking down at the garment now clothing him. But his voice caught in his throat as he saw his were turning green.
The change started at his fingertips, a pale mint color that darkened as it spread across his palms and up his wrists. The skin didn't just change color; it changed texture, becoming smoother, the fingers more slender and elegant. His nails lengthened, hardening into pointed tips that gleamed in the moonlight.
"Stop this!" Phil cried, but his voice was changing too, the deep timbre rising to a higher pitch that didn't sound like him at all.
The green continued its relentless advance up his arms, spreading across his chest. As it moved, his torso began to reshape itself. His broad shoulders narrowed, his chest swelled outward, forming soft mounds that strained against the black fabric of the gown. The sensation was otherworldly, bones shifting, cartilage reforming, muscle and fat redistributing themselves.
Phil gasped as his ribcage compressed, cinching inward to create a narrow waist. His hips, by contrast, began to widen, bones cracking and reforming with agonizing slowness. The discomfort made him want to scream, but the sound that escaped his lips was a feminine whimper that terrified him more than the physical transformation.
And then came the invasion of his mind.
It started as a whisper, a voice that wasn't his own echoing in the recesses of his consciousness.
At last...
"No!" Phil clutched at his head, which was now covered in hair that had grown several inches in moments, darkening from his natural brown to a rich, deep black that fell past his shoulders. "Get out of my head!"
So long I've waited in the shadows between worlds...
The voice was feminine, ancient, and dripping with malevolent satisfaction. Memories that weren't his own began to flood Phil's mind. A stone tower overlooking a medieval village. Green hands mixing potions in a cauldron. The same hands directing bolts of emerald lightning at armored men. Looking out from an execution pyre, flames licking upward, and a vow of return spat through burning lips.
"Morgana," he whispered, the name coming unbidden to his transformed lips.
Yes. And you, little thief, seeking power that was never meant for you, have provided the perfect vessel for my return.
The transformation accelerated. Phil's face burned as his cheekbones rose higher, his jaw narrowed, his nose refined itself into a delicate, aristocratic shape. His eyes stung as they changed color, bleeding from brown to a brilliant, unnatural green that glowed with inner light. His lips plumped, taking on a deep black hue without any makeup.
With each physical change, Phil felt his identity slipping away, replaced by the ancient consciousness forcing its way into his being. Memories of his childhood, his education, his job as an accountant, everything was being overwritten by centuries of arcane knowledge, of spells and curses, of power that dwarfed anything he could have imagined.
His legs changed last, lengthening slightly, the muscles becoming more streamlined. The green coloration completed its journey, covering him from head to toe in skin the color of emeralds.
Phil made one last, desperate attempt to reclaim his mind. "Please," he begged the robed figures surrounding him. "Help me!"
But they were smiling now, lowering their hoods to reveal faces filled with reverence and awe. They weren't looking at Phil anymore, they were looking at her.
Foolish boy, Morgana's voice purred in his fading consciousness. They've been working toward this moment for generations. My faithful coven, preserving my knowledge, seeking the perfect vessel for my return.
Phil felt his motor control slipping away as Morgana seized the reins of his transformed body. The magic binding his feet to the ground released, but it was Morgana who took the first step, testing the feel of her new form.
She lifted her green hands, examining them with a pleased expression on a face that had been Phil's just minutes before. She ran those hands down the curves of her new body, savoring the physical sensations of flesh after centuries of disembodied existence.
"Perfect," she murmured, her voice musical and commanding. "You've done well, my children."
Eliza stepped forward and knelt before her. "Mistress Morgana. We have awaited your return for so long."
"Rise, faithful one." Morgana smiled, revealing teeth that were just slightly too sharp to be human. "Your dedication shall be rewarded."
Phil's consciousness, now trapped in a corner of what had been his own mind, watched in horror as Morgana flexed her fingers, calling forth a sphere of crackling green energy. The magic came effortlessly to her, the power that Phil had so desperately wanted now flowing through veins that no longer belonged to him.
This is the power you sought, Morgana taunted him silently. How does it feel to be so close to it, yet unable to touch it?
Phil could only watch as Morgana addressed the coven surrounding her. These weren't cult members looking for spiritual fulfillment; they were witches and warlocks who had been working toward this resurrection for who knew how long. And he, in his arrogance and greed, had handed them the willing body that they needed.
"My faithful coven," Morgana announced, her voice carrying through the clearing with supernatural resonance. "The world has changed much in my absence, but soon it shall know my power once again." She smiled, a predatory expression that made several of the coven members shiver despite their joy. "We have much work to do."
