Chris had been counting the days in prison for seven years. Each tick mark on his cell wall was a promise to himself: freedom would come. Not through parole or good behavior, there's no way they'd ever grant that to someone with his record. But instead through the most meticulously planned escape in the history of Westlake Penitentiary.
For months, he'd coordinated with three other inmates. Rodriguez, a former bank robber; Mitch, in for grand theft auto; and Tyson, a con man who could talk his way out of anything. They were his cover, his distraction. The three of them thought they were all escaping with him, heading for the Canadian border in a stolen maintenance truck.
But Chris had different plans.
The prison break itself went like clockwork. The guard rotation, the disabled cameras, the maintenance access door with the faulty lock—all exactly as he'd mapped out. When the alarms finally blared, Chris was already separated from the others, ducking into the drainage culvert while they headed for the truck.
"They'll be caught within hours," he muttered to himself as he emerged from the drainage pipe half a mile from the prison. The authorities would be looking for four men heading north. Not one man heading south. And certainly not where he was actually going.
Dawn was just breaking as Chris approached Westlake High School. It was 6:15 AM—too early for students, but the teachers would be arriving to prepare for the day. Perfect timing. He slipped through the athletic field, keeping to the shadows of the early morning light, his orange jumpsuit painfully visible against the dew-covered grass.
The back entrance was unlocked, just as his inside source had promised. A janitor with a gambling debt and a desperate need for the five thousand dollars Chris had arranged to have delivered to him. He slipped inside, his prison-issued shoes squeaking slightly on the freshly polished linoleum.
The hallway stretched before him, lined with lockers and classroom doors. The familiar smell of institutional cleaner and chalk dust brought back unwanted memories of his own school days. He moved quietly, hearing distant voices of early-arriving teachers.
Then he froze. Through the front entrance windows, he saw a police cruiser pulling into the parking lot. His heart hammered against his ribs as an officer stepped out, reaching back into the vehicle to retrieve something.
"Fuck," Chris whispered as he saw that the officer was holding a leash connected to a German Shepherd. The dog's nose was already working the air, and the officer held something in his other hand. Even from this distance, Chris recognized one of his prison shirts.
They'd figured out his actual escape route much faster than anticipated. Perhaps someone talked, or maybe they found evidence in his cell pointing to his real plan. It didn't matter now. What mattered was that a trained police dog was about to follow his scent directly to where he was standing.
Chris read the numbers over the doors until he found his target, Room 114, and ducked inside of the empty and dark classroom. Frantically, he pulled out the small glass vial from the hidden pocket he'd sewn into his prison uniform. The liquid inside glowed faintly with an unnatural blue luminescence.
"This better not be bullshit," he muttered, turning the vial in his fingers.
Six months ago, Chris wouldn't have believed in magic. But that was before he met Elias, the strange old man who'd been brought in for disturbing the peace outside a university research facility. Everyone thought he was crazy when he claimed to be a centuries-old wizard, but Chris had seen things during their shared time in the prison laundry. Things that defied explanation.
He'd watched as Elias changed his eye color from brown to vibrant purple after drinking a similar potion. Elias had promised this vial would do much more—a complete physical transformation that would render Chris unrecognizable. He'd traded his most valuable possession for it—the location of a stash of cash from his last job that the police never found.
Outside, Chris heard the dog barking, getting closer. No time left to hesitate.
He uncorked the vial and downed the contents in one gulp.
For a heartbeat, nothing happened. The liquid tasted like overripe berries and something metallic, leaving a tingling sensation on his tongue. Then it hit him.
A wave of energy surged from his stomach outward, like lightning spreading through his veins. His head snapped back involuntarily as his entire body seized. The empty vial slipped from his fingers, shattering on the floor as he staggered in the middle of the empty room
"Holy shit," Chris gasped, his voice already sounding higher, softer.
His prison uniform began to vibrate against his skin, the coarse orange fabric rippling like water. The baggy shirt constricted, fibers rewinding themselves into a tight knit pattern as it transformed into a form-fitting sweater in the same vibrant orange.
As the fabric tightened, Chris felt his torso changing beneath it. His waist narrowed dramatically, ribs shifting and compressing with a series of soft cracks that should have been painful but instead felt simply odd. His shoulders pulled inward, narrowing his frame, while his chest expanded outward. Breasts grew beneath the tightening sweater, swelling from nothing to small mounds that pushed against the fabric.
"Oh my god," he whispered, feeling the differences in his rapidly changing body. The transformation was happening so fast he could barely process each change before another began.
The prison pants loosened at the waist but tightened around his thighs as his hips began to widen, creating the distinctive curve of female hips. The fabric of his pants rippled like water, lightening to a grey plaid as it shortened and gathered. Within seconds, the prison pants had transformed into a pleated skirt that fell just above his knees.
His legs themselves were changing too, the coarse hair disappearing as if being absorbed back into his skin, leaving them smooth and hairless. The muscles reconfigured, becoming less bulky but more toned, creating elegant calves and thighs that tapered down to more delicate ankles.
Unable to help himself, Chris swayed his new hips experimentally, marveling at how different his center of gravity felt. The movement came naturally, a feminine sway that he'd never experienced before but somehow felt right with his new anatomy.
"Incredible," he murmured, as he finally looked down while the transformation continued upward to his face and head. His close-shaved prison cut began to tingle intensely as hair follicles activated and accelerated. Dark brown strands sprouted from his scalp, growing inches in seconds, cascading down past his shoulders. The weight of it was surprising, pulling at his scalp in a way that was foreign.
His facial structure shifted next, cheekbones rising and becoming more pronounced as his jaw narrowed and softened. His nose shrunk slightly, becoming more delicate, while his lips plumped and took on a natural rosy tint. His eyebrows arched more dramatically, framing eyes that grew larger as his lashes thickened and curled upward.
Chris reached up to touch his face, marveling at the softness of his skin, sliding down as his Adam's apple receded and his throat becoming smooth and slender.
As the transformation completed with a final surge of energy that left him momentarily light-headed, Chris smirked at the immense success of his plan, and just in time too.
Outside the classroom, he heard the dog barking frantically at the door, having followed his scent directly to this room. His heart raced again, but differently now as he was no longer the escaped convict they were looking for. At least, not in appearance.
The doorknob turned, and Chris quickly composed himself, trying to wipe the smirk off his face and pulling out the ID Elias had promised would appear. He tucked a strand of long brown hair behind his ear, marveling at the natural way his hand moved to perform this distinctly feminine gesture.
The door swung open, and a uniformed officer stepped in, restraining the excited German Shepherd that continued to bark and pull toward him.
"Ma'am," the officer said, tipping his hat slightly. "Sorry to disturb you. We're tracking an escaped prisoner who might have come this way."
Chris looked at the officer with wide, innocent eyes. His new voice came naturally, higher and softer than his former bass tone. "An escaped prisoner? Here at the school?"
The dog continued to pull toward him, nose working overtime. The officer frowned, looking between Chris and the animal.
"Rex seems pretty certain there was someone in this room," he said, eyeing Chris with slight suspicion. "Are you a teacher here? I don't think I've seen you before."
Chris smiled, already holding Elizabeth Winters' ID card between his slimmer fingers. "I'm substituting today," he explained smoothly. "I'm Elizabeth Winters. I got the call this morning to cover the English classes." He gestured to the desk. "I was just getting familiar with the lesson plans."
The officer studied the ID card carefully, then looked back at Chris's transformed face as he tried his best to look innocent. The magic had made a photo ID that was an exact match to his new appearance and it raised no suspicions, despite having been created moments ago.
"I apologize for the intrusion, Ms. Winters," the officer said, handing back the ID. "We're looking for a dangerous escaped convict. Male, about six feet tall, shaved head, orange jumpsuit."
Chris put the ID away. "That sounds frightening. I haven't seen anyone like that, officer."
The dog whined and strained against its leash, still fixated on Chris. The officer pulled the animal back with a frown.
"Rex seems to think otherwise," the officer said, looking around the room. "The scent must be very strong in here."
Chris shrugged innocently. "I found that when I came in," he said. "Perhaps someone was in here earlier? I only arrived about fifteen minutes ago."
The officer nodded, seeming satisfied with the explanation. "We'll continue our search. If you see anything suspicious, please call 911 immediately."
"Of course, officer," Chris replied, his new feminine voice steady despite his racing heart.
As the officer tugged the reluctant dog out of the classroom, Chris released a long, slow breath. Through the window, he watched the officer return to his cruiser and radio in his findings. His plan had worked, and now the world was his oyster.
