It had been so long since the incident during your childhood days had left you traumatized with a permanent mental scar over your psyche. For over 25 years now, your nights were plagued by visions and faint whispers in the dark, and no matter what you or your parents did, it just wouldn’t stop. From what little you remember, the circumstances surrounding the incident were terrible enough to force your parents to permanently move overseas to the Americas, away from your hometown and all its residents. You were certain there was someone there you held dearly, but you could never truly remember who it was.
Sleeping pills? Your nightmares grew longer and vivid. Therapy? And the horrifying murmurs of something lurking in the dark grows louder, sounding as if it belonged to a sorrowful being crying out for attention. It had left you feeling grumpy and easily riled up all day long, the irremovable feeling of guilt for something you had no memory of weighing you down even further. But somehow, you had made your mark on life with a great education and even a stable job at a banking firm. Your parents connections were certainly to thank for as well.
But you were unsatisfied with leaving it at that, finally mustering up the courage, time and savings to book a flight back to Japan, in a small countryside village where it all began. Leaving your parents a small note to explain yourself before you left for the flight that Friday evening.
And before you knew it, you had arrived at that same village you could barely remember in your mind, the locale having grown so desolate, so abandoned, that there remained only one bus that came around every 4 hours or so. Apparently from what the driver told you, only a handful of people lived here and they weren’t the sociable type. A far cry from the cheerful townsfolk and farmers you could recall with some difficulty.
Wandering the overgrown streets and derelict houses, a chill sets in as you walk through the desolate rendition of your childhood, staring up at broken window sills and torn down doors, feeling as if something was watching you, shaking off the fear as you continued down towards where you remembered the forest was, and the clearing where it all started…
Continuing down the cracked pavement as it eventually gives way to overgrown bushes and muddy forest floor, the chill from before has heightened to tense shivers telling you to turn back now, biting down the urge to run as you step deeper into the shade of the trees beginning to dot the landscape. Until soon enough, you were where you knew you had to be, glancing slowly around the place as you catch sight of something glinting off the forest floor, bending down to pick at the worn weathered remains of a spectacle. A tiny fragment of glass still holding on reflecting the dim sunlight above.
That was when your head stings with the image of the spectacles igniting long repressed memories, ravaged by the passage of time until only torn imagery remained; recalling another boy wearing these same glasses, a dare gone wrong with terrified screams fading into the depths of the forest as your vision goes black just when the adults come running into view.
ぽ!
Hearing that familiar word, you turn around to find someone standing off in the trees, almost mistaking the impossibly tall maiden for another tree as she steps out of the darkness, pale sundress flowing gently around her voluptuous figure with an equally large summer hat atop her head of voluminous auburn brown hair. Smacking her lips as that gentle voice carries through on the wind, a familiar visage peering through a haircut that had remained the same all these years later albeit with a long overgrown mane trailing behind.
Something breaks within you after the sight of your long lost friend's face brings forth the repressed memories of that day into the forefront of your mind. Remembering how you had shoved him aside the moment you felt the thing’s presence behind you, dooming him to a fate worse than death as you ran for the safety of the light while his blood curdling screams echo behind you. The gut wrenching feeling of guilt and disgust instantly immobilizing you as you fall to your knees with regret in your eyes, doing nothing even as Hiro takes your head in her ice cold arms, nestling you in her bosom with her child like face gazing down at you with deep black eyes devoid of life, that monotonous smile on her face assuring you that all would soon be well with your sins soon to be forgiven. Returning to her embrace as she coddled you like a mother would a toddler.
You weren’t quite sure if Hiro had secretly been female but at this point you couldn’t care as she brings her lips up to your face. Closing your eyes even with the sickening sounds of splitting flesh and ravenous breathing filling your ears, years of torment coming to an end…
Until it all fades away…
