In a nameless place far away from civilized lands, a phantom manor is said to materialize with the coming of every full moon, opening its doors for the remainder of the night before vanishing as the clock strikes four. Any unlucky individual still remaining within disappearing along with the ghostly building.
Within, countless perils await. From apparitions that haunt the halls to cursed objects, even the most mundane rooms spelled certain death for those not on their guard. According to personal recounts from survivors who had managed to brave its interior and live, demihuman beasts lurked within; part human, part monster, it was said that they would snatch away the unwary, dragging them off screaming into the depths to a fate worse than death.
But whether the ramblings of the surviving men and women were true or just simple figments of a broken mind, one thing was consistent with the tales; a painting of an otherworldly maiden with no pupils and wearing unusual clothes, found in the main hall hung high over the cobweb filled fireplace for all to see, the painting itself covered in the dust of ages and half eaten away by insects.
Eventually however, one party of brave souls were supposedly able to reach the heart of the place, the lone survivor that eventually came to be Queen of a long lost empire telling of their deed during the decades that followed, the manor itself never appearing since then.
In the modern world however, tales of people disappearing in broad daylight had begun to spread. Of places that led to the unspeakably strange places, portals to the unknown harboring hidden dangers and creatures that were not of this Earth. Otherside, that was what people had come to call them.
And in the flurry of rumours, talk of a mysterious painting depicting an ‘alien’ woman was brought up time and time again by those who had supposedly found themselves trapped or lost in the Otherside, only to miraculously escape as they ran through doors or dove through holes in the floor, sometimes on accident as they claimed to be chased by monsters and demons. Recounting how they heard the ethereal voice of a woman echo through the halls on occassion, sometimes laughing, sometimes sobbing.
But it didn't sound anything like a human...
Somewhere in the tangled space between worlds, the heart of the long forgotten mansion was beginning to beat once more, struggling to re-emerge into the current world, any doorway acting like a portal, waiting for any unlucky individual to come through and find themselves wandering the Otherside without even realizing it...
