Janet was having a really bad day. Most days were a bit rough for her but today in particular was even worse. It was a bit of a long story but not really. It could all be boiled down to one thing.
Janet was shy.
She was cripplingly shy. Leaving the house and being in public felt like walking through sandpaper and being the center of attention? She’d rather throw herself into the sun. She had hated, with a fierce passion, any plays they had forced her to do growing up, any public speaking she had to do, and basically anything that drove everyone’s gazes pointed right at her. All those eyes, watching her, looking at her, it was always too much. Way way too much. She could feel them on her body and she felt like she was going to have a nervous breakdown.
The worst part, was that it was noticeable.
Everyone knew she was shy. She had the unfortunate but mercifully simple nickname of “Shy Janet” growing up. It could have been worse, really. She still remembered “Sucky Suzy” in high school. Shudder. She wouldn’t wish that kind of fate on anyone. That girl had gotten more looks than anyone she had ever known. Guys and even women had approached her all throughout high school, just because she was found in a bathroom one time with someone.
And that was the opposite of her experiences. Not the getting approached part, that had happened and it had been, mortifying. She wasn’t good with people and having someone have that kind of interest in her, was worse than 1000 eyes looking at her. The idea of having sex? It made her go so red she thought she was going to pass out from the blood rushing into her head. No, absolutely not. It’s not that she didn’t want to but, she just, she just couldn’t.
Even now, in college, she hadn’t had any kind of relationship or anything even close. She was a research assistant for the great Dr. Zukoni. Most people wouldn’t know of her but she had always been Janet’s hero. She had been shocked and had barely spoken two words to Dr. Zukoni when they had first met, not believing the reality in front of her. Luckily, the doctor was mostly just concerned with Janet doing the work. Cleaning, organizing, basic simple tasks that need to be done but not by the people making the real progress. Dr. Zukoni was studying wave length principles and light refraction. Most would find it boring but Janet had always found it fascinating. Redirecting light had, many problems, but the applications were amazing as well. In the far far future of a thousand years from now, this could be one of the first steps that were taken in making hard light constructs or even being able to give people the ability to manipulate light itself! And in the realm of reality and not science fiction, the green energy prospects alone were crazy! Not just having solar panels and things that contained the energy from the sun’s light but things that actually brought more of it into a specific spot. It could revolutionize everything.
Sadly, or at least it felt sad to her, the military was slightly involved. It wasn’t uncommon for the military to throw out grants left and right for better weapons technology, particularly for research done on campuses, but was usually limited to just that. A check for money and hopefully some actual progress being done. Nothing too surprising or really even an issue.
The problem was that there had been a breakthrough. She didn’t understand it, of course, but she had been forced to sign a bunch of NDA agreements and had Dr. Zukoni herself impress upon her how serious this was. She couldn’t share it with anyone.
Now, the military was at the Campus itself, apparently. Not in uniforms and tanks or anything crazy like that, but there were some big deal people coming to watch Dr. Zukoni give a presentation.
And Janet had to be there.
She would have taken literally anything to not be involved. A disease, drugs, a bullet. She was going to be watched and looked at by super important military people. There might even be a General! And if she messed up or did anything to make herself look bad, not only would that be in front of them, but also in front of her hero Dr. Zukoni!
To say that today was the most stressful day of her life so far, was not an exaggeration. It was possible it was an extreme understatement and today was going to be the most stressful day of her entire life.
The only thing that had made her put one foot in front of the other as she walked towards the lab, was that she had already passed out twice at home after her vision had gone white and that missing this would be even worse than attending it. She couldn’t deal with that, not at all.
So she arrived at the lab, feeling like she wanted to curl into herself and be completely invisible.
Dr. Zukoni quickly found her and quickly she was directed to doing some simple tasks. Her anxiety spiked because Dr. Zukoni seemed both extremely excited and incredibly nervous. That didn’t calm her down at all! Even the great doctor was nervous?!
And then, Janet seemed to blink and she was in a prepared lab with people looking at her. She had been going off autopilot, just doing what she was told, and had only stopped when she had stopped having things to do. She was sure her heart both stopped and could be heard from across the room.
“Hello gentlemen! Today is going to be an extraordinary day for science and for the branches of the military. I want to express again that this is only the first step and years, decades even, may be needed before anything viable comes from it. Of course that time will be lessened with more talent, grants, and teams on this than just me. Now I’ve never been one for long speeches or talks, so let me just show you.”
Janet was pointed off to the side, her job done until she needed to clean up.
Dr. Zukoni pulled out what looked like a, Janet didn’t even know. Her first thought was “Death ray” followed by “rail gun”. It was a long and wide metal thing that ended in a kind of point. Was it a laser?
“This is where the taxpayer's money has been going and I have to say, it’s been well worth it. This is what I’ve been calling The Infuser. I hadn’t meant for that to be its official name while having it designed and made but that’s just how it happened. It represents the current peak of my research into light refraction. Bending light around things has been something that many have worked on over the years. I have worked on many projects to just that effect. The first difference here is simple. It is better.”
Dr. Zukoni then pointed it at a flashlight in front of a screen and “shot it”. At least that’s what she assumed had happened.
Because the flashlight disappeared.
Dr. Zukoni then walked over to where the flashlight was and seemingly grabbed empty air, before making a ‘click’ and a beam of light came out.
“The infuser bends all light around a target, rendering it effectively invisible to the naked eye. But the real progress has been by the secondary effect, infusing an inner light that’s able to penetrate outwards from the diffraction. It works off a different wavelength and then passed through the secondary light, making it possible for, in this case, light to leave it. But the most important effect, is that it would allow someone to see.
The combat applications of a truly invisible scout, jet, or even bomb should be obvious.
Sadly, as it is currently, there are still many many years before this is viable as there are many downsides, the first of which being…”
Janet couldn’t listen anymore, she had her mouth gaping open, staring at the machine. Being truly invisible? The great Dr. Zukoni had done it again. But that wasn’t the only thing going through Janet’s head. What would life be like if people could just be invisible? What would life be like for her? People would never be able to see her again. The idea was now the number 1 thing she wanted. She would never have to deal with eyes on her or people being aware of her or, or anything like that. It was a dream come true.
Dr. Zukoni continued to give her sales pitch and the military people and her quickly hashed out some basic things with promises to talk further later. They seemed very excited but for completely different reasons than her or Dr. Zukoni.
It seemed like there should have been more but that was, it? Talks were had, future meetings were set up, emails and business cards exchanged, and then the military left and she and the doctor were left to clean up. It may have seemed simple, roll out a giant ray gun and point it, but that couldn’t have been further from the truth. The whole room had needed to be specifically set up.
As they were cleaning, Dr. Zukoni started talking to her. Something she hadn’t really done before.
“It’s crazy isn’t it? Just like that, we’ve made invisibility. It’ll be a decade or two before invisible soldiers or anything too crazy but it’s right there. Humanity has done it.”
“Y-yeah.”
Dr. Zukoni looked at her and Janet turned away.
“I’m not blind. You’ve been staring at the machine with longing since it was rolled out.”
Janet felt her anxiety spike and then double. Had she been so obvious? It was true she wanted to be invisible but she didn’t want the doctor to see her like that! She blushed crimson and continued to clean up the room. The doctor started talking again and she could hear a smile in her voice.
“Well, I understand. I also wanted to be invisible when I was younger. It can be stressful being looked at by others so often. You did good today. It will be a while before humans can turn invisible though. I mean, there’s no way to turn back for starters. And I don’t mean it hasn’t been discovered, I mean the machine as it currently is makes it just about impossible to turn back. Not to mention that the effects on the living are, well. More than a few mice went blind and some did turn invisible, but they died. Using that machine, I give a 10% chance that someone who used it would be not-blind and not-dead.”
With that, the great Dr. Zukoni walked out of the room, but not before saying one final thing.
“Hey, I’ll be back later. Feel free to go home and be careful of the switch on the side that turns the machine on.”
And then Janet was alone.

Unknown to Janet, Dr. Zukoni had a darker side. The type of people who strive for power and money, the type filled with ambition, are usually darker even before they get ahold of anything. And afterwards, after they get near unlimited or incredible amounts of power, they let their darker sides go. For some reason, this surprises people, but give anyone enough power and you’d find very few good people in the world left.
As far as dark desires go, Dr. Zukoni’s was a bit eccentric. She didn’t molest or force herself on her lab students or embezzle money or steal research or do anything bad scientists would normally do. She merely created the circumstances for ‘accidents.’ Sometimes, things in science would take years and years, when testing it on a few dozen people would give you a lot of answers a lot more quickly. But human experimentation takes time to get approved and god forbid there are any real deaths. Oh drugs and a few things like that are fine but anything else always gets the side eye. But Dr. Zukoni had always been inspired by mad scientists, by those who did human trials and then made incredible amounts of progress.
So if the shy little woman wanted to be invisible so bad, she’d give her the chance. It’d be a shame if she didn’t take it or just died, but if she didn’t well, it might be hard to find her in the future but that was fine. Knowing that a human even can survive would give her a lot to work around.

Janet couldn’t believe it. She had just been left alone with a machine, the machine, that was probably worth more than she’d make in 100 lifetimes. That could turn things invisible. Left all alone with her and then told she could just go home after she finished cleaning up.
Shouldn’t, shouldn’t the machine have been put in a safe bunker surrounded by thick impenetrable walls and guarded by people’s lives or something?
And it even had a simple on/off switch on the side.
All she would need to do would be to…
“No, No, I can’t. I can’t. This, this has to be a test right? Or something like that?”
Yet she couldn’t stop staring at it.
“I could die, or go blind. Be blind and invisible for the rest of my life. If anyone ever found out I’d probably be blind, invisible, and in prison. What would Dr. Zukoni think of me? And I could Die.”
Yet her feet moved, her pace quickened, her gaze focused. She couldn’t tear away from it. It was everything she had never known she had wanted. Wait, no, that wasn’t really true. She had always wished to be invisible, sometimes even literally, but she had never really considered the thought, broke it down, taken it to this kind of fantasy like extreme. She tried to remind herself that she could die but it felt like someone had dangled freedom in front of her. It’s not like she ever wanted to be cripplingly shy. That she was unable to deal with other people’s affection. Other people said being shy was cute but to her it just felt like, chains. Always anxious or panicked or embarrassed or uncomfortable or unhappy around others. Only truly feeling good while alone. It hurt, in its own way.
“I want this. I want this so bad.”
She turned on the machine. It was pointed right at her face.
