“Damn it,” Jessica said, ruffling through her bag, digging past the items she packed for the trip.
Her friend Kallahan turned to face the commotion. “What? What is it?” She asked, already having her bags packed and thrown over her shoulders, carrying a bag in each of her four hands.
“I lost my ID,” Jessica replied.
- “Does that mean you can’t come on the trip?”
- “I don’t know. I’ll double-check, just to be sure.”
Jessica began sifting through her possessions again, checking if she could find it, but still nothing. Keys, phone, journal, chapstick, knife…
Wait. Knife?
She looked down at the sharp blade sitting on top of some clothes in her bag. The green glowing blade dimly illuminated her smile.
“I have a plan,” she said, turned to Kallahan with a grin on her face.
Jessica ran to her closet and fetched a large plastic bin. Bringing it back to the room with all the bags in it, she placed the box on the floor. “I’m going to travel in here.”
Kallahan glanced at the box, with its black body and green lid, before glancing back at her friend with a confused look on her face. “Seriously?”
- “Yeah! Remember that knife I got from my internship a couple months ago?”
- “Sure, but what does that have to do wi—” her eyes widened as the realization hit her. “Oh! Really? Won’t that be uncomfortable?”
- “Maybe. Only one way to find out!”
Sitting down on the floor, she pulled off her leg and placed it in the bin. “Let’s get started!”
Kallahan sighed. “All right, but you owe me for this. I could be arrested for smuggling you across state borders, you know.”
With Kallahan’s help, Jessica detached her other leg, thighs, her stomach, waist, both arms, forearms, hands, feet, and eventually, separated her head from her upper chest, and had all sixteen of her parts neatly placed inside the plastic pin. This required removing some clothing to accommodate, but Jessica was okay with that. At least she’d surprise the security guard if she was caught.
After placing the lid on the bin and sealing away her disassembled friend, Kallahan put her eye up to one of the lid’s air holes.
“You okay in there?” Kallahan asked.
- “Just fine! Turns out by body make a nice pillow for my head! Now put me in the car!”
“Weirdest trip ever,” Kallahan mumbled as she picked up the box.
“Whoa!” She gasped, nearly falling over.
“What is it?” Jessica asked, her voice somewhat muffled through the bin lid.
“You’re just…” Kallahan said with a strained voice. “Really heavy.”
- “You go to the gym and have two extra arms! This shouldn’t be hard for you!”
- “I’m going to need two extra legs to carry you.”
After trying and failing to stabilize herself again, Kallahan eventually said “Screw it,” placed the box on the floor and pushed it out the door and into the hallway. Going back and picking up the rest of the bags, she carried them all to the elevator while kicking the bin down the hall with her feet, despite her friend’s muffled protests. This continued out into the parking lot until the two reached Kallahan’s car.
After putting the bags in the trunk, she picked up the bin and placed it among the bags, but not without some difficulty.
“You better not have to pee mid-drive,” Kallahan said, tapping the bin. After getting in the car and starting the engine, she mumbled to herself. “$400 dollars and having to smuggle my naked friend across the state border just to see Disneyland. This better be worth it.”
An uneasiness set onto Kallahan as she approached the border checkpoint two hours into the drive. After pulling up to the gate, she tried to cleanse her face of any tells that she was hiding her best friend, separated into many different pieces, in the back of her car. Act normal, she thought.
A male security guard was coming out of his booth. He approached the car window and tapped on it. At his request, Kallahan lowered the window.
“ID, please,” the guard asked.
Reaching an arm down to ruffle around in her pocket, she eventually pulled out her wallet and handed it to the guard. The guard was tall, with short brown hair and nice blue eyes, and he was fit. Kallahan absolutely noticed it but didn’t give any feelings away, keeping a straight face as the guard inspected her driver’s liscence.
“Please open your trunk,” the guard requested.
At his request, Kallahan pushed a button on the car’s dashboard and the trunk opened.
Please don’t find her. Please don’t find her, Kallahan prayed, growing tense as the guard walked around to the back of the car. The guard gave a brief inspection of the trunk’s contents before returning to the window.
“You’re clear to pass. Go on ahead,” he said, pulling a card out of his pocket, returning to his booth, and swiping it in the terminal. “Have a safe trip,” he said as the car drove off.
I can’t believe that worked, Kallahan thought, beginning to relax as the checkpoint disappeared behind her.
After many more hours of driving, they finally reached their hotel in Anaheim. Picking up their bags and tugging the bin up to their hotel room, she let out an exhausted sigh of both weariness and relief as she opened the door to the room. Thankfully, they both had separate beds.
Hauling the bin up onto the bed she had decide would be Jessica’s, Kallahan pulled the lid off the box and gazed upon her nude, disassembled friend, picking up her head from the pile of body parts and lifting it gently out of the box.
“Did we make it?” Jessica asked.
- “We made it.”
- “And the guard at the border?”
- “Didn’t suspect a thing.”
- “Did you think he was hot?”
- “No.”
- “You can’t lie to me, Kal.”
- “Okay, fine. He was hot. You would have thought so too if you were straight.”
- “Alright, I’ll take your word for it. Sounds like one hell of a guy.”
After being unceremoniously dumped out of the bin and eventually reassembled, Jessica pulled some clothes out of one of her bags and sprinted to the bathroom to get dressed, shower, and relieve herself. After twenty minutes she came out to see Kallahan dressed in her pajamas and clicking through channels on the room’s TV, before eventually just running it off.
“Is it dark out already?” Jessica asked, climbing into her own bed.
- “I take it you didn’t notice before?”
- “No. How long were we on the road?”
- “Nine hours. You should get some sleep, because tomorrow will be even more eventful than today.”
- “I don’t know about that. Today was pretty fun.”
- “You had fun sitting in that box for the whole day?”
- “Yeah! I couldn’t believe we were actually doing it.”
The two chuckled as they both reached up and turned off the lamps on their nightstands.
Kallahan rolled over and sighed as her muscles relaxed. “Well, if nothing else, we’ll at least have a fun story to tell the others when we get home…,” she said, as they both drifted off into a deep sleep.
