Magic was always a peculiar thing. Everyone knew that, especially those who were magic themselves, or, in the case of Jessica, affected by magic.
Magic items were the most common example of this. Since most magic exists unseen, imbuing objects with it allows for more convenient access to it. Sometimes, it was a book that would float when you were reading it. Other times, it could be a torch that never went out. Imbued items could be anything and do anything. As the gods and their magics progressed to the modern era, science became applied to magic as well, allowing for many more interesting creations.
MagiTech was famously the pioneer in the modern age’s magic. Jessica always thought the name sounded ridiculous, but she still liked the company and its products. Hoping to get some experience in magic-related careers, she applied for an internship at MagiTech. After she was accepted, she found herself assigned to the position of “product tester.”
She muttered the title under her breath as she was handed a packet detailing the specifics of her job. It was exactly what it sounded like. Every few weeks or months, she was to receive a package with one of MagiTech’s items in it. She was to test if the item worked and submit a detailed report to the company by the end of the month. The job also promised considerable compensation if she were to be harmed by any of the products.
Seemed simple. She could work other jobs while doing this internship, get experience and get paid.
Two weeks later, the first item arrived in the mail late at night. She carried the box it was in back to her apartment and set it down on her bed carefully. Some items were very temperamental, and the slightest rough disturbance could set them off. She doubted this was the case, as it likely wouldn’t have survived shipping if that were true.
Jessica grabbed a pair of scissors and cut through the tape sealing the box shut. Inside the box, she found another box, only this one was of a much higher quality than the standard brown cardboard that it had come in. She slowly lifted the white box out, set it down beside the first box, and moved the first box off of the bed.
The white box was small and rectangular. The box it came in was so much bigger. The white box had the signature MagiTech logo on the side. Underneath it was the product name.
“Divider Knife.”
Jessica silently spoke the word, narrowing her eyes in suspicion. She opened the box and pulled out a smooth, sharp knife. The handle was white like the box, and it had a small glowing green stripe running from base to hilt. A similar glow ran along the tip of the knife. A small black plastic sheath also came with the knife for safety purposes.
She looked around for an instruction manual but couldn’t find one. You’d think someone testing a product would need a manual, Jessica thought. She picked up the knife and turned it over in her palm. She poked the tip of the knife with her thumb.
No blood. Huh.
She ran the blade across her palm. Still nothing. What does this knife even do?
Then she remembered the name of the product. It was a Divider Knife. She looked down at her arm and got curious. Pressing the blade into her arm, just behind her watch, she sank the green blade in.
No pain?
Intrigued, she kept pushing the knife in. Just a little further.
Then it went all the way through. She let out a yelp as her hand fell to the floor, completely separated from the rest of her body. She dropped the knife in shock and it clattered to the floor. After the panic wore off, she realized she wasn’t injured. She looked down at the stump on her left arm where her hand used to be attached. The was no blood, or any sign of wound. The separation point was covered over by a smooth layer of skin. She poked the stump and shuddered. It felt weird, but nice at the same time. She had never touched that area before.
She turned her attention to her hand still laying on the floor. Skin covered the stump on that end, too. She moved her thumb across the wood floor. Wait, I can control it? She thought.
Jessica drummed the fingers of her detached hand. She was in full control of it, even though it wasn’t attached. She had seen Dullahans before. It was nothing new, but she had never experienced the feeling. It was strange, but still interesting.
Still cautious, she picked up her hand and stuck the two stumps together, hoping they would reattach again. The hand magically reconnected with the arm. The stumps, or any evidence of the divide, disappeared completely. It had settled back into place like reconnecting LEGO bricks.
Jessica inspected her left hand with a new curiosity. She grabbed the hand and gave it a firm tug. It popped off, and she was holding her now-detached hand again. Firmly planting her hand pack in place, she picked up the knife and got an idea.
She lay back on her bed, resting her entire body on top of its smooth pine green sheets. Her legs still dangled off the side of the bed, kicking lightly. Jessica raised the knife above her to get a good look. She turned the knife so the green part of the blade faced her. Slowly and cautiously, she lowered the knife towards her neck. The cold metal made her shudder slightly as the blade pressed into her neck. Like earlier, there was no pain. It actually felt good, giving Jessica a pleasant sensation as it continued to sink into her.
Suddenly, the sensation ended as the knife fully broke through the other side of her neck and hit the sheets, thankfully without cutting those. Jessica pulled the knife out from behind her and set it down on her pillow.
There was a moment of inactivity, as she gripped the edges of the bed, unsure what she should do next. Slowly, she sat up, but as she sat up, her view didn’t change, as she saw her body rising away from her. She tried to look around but was unable to.
She stared at the back of her headless body, shuddering slightly. Her neck had nothing on top of it and was covered by another layer of smooth skin over the stump. Jessica turned around--- well--- her body turned around, now one leg up on the bed, and picked her head up off the mattress.
Setting her head on her lap, she felt pure amazement and shock as her headless body towered over her. She took a moment to admire her curves and sexy figure. She had never seen it from this perspective before.
Slowly, she picked up her head and raised it to her neck to reattach it. She felt it comfortably connect to the rest of her body. Yet something was off. She looked down and realized that she had attached her head backwards.
She raised her hands to head and pulled. Thankfully, it wasn’t stuck, as she was able to pull her head off again without too much effort. Making sure that it was facing the right way this time, she rested her head back onto her torso, a warm sensation comforting her as the two pieces rejoined as one again.
Now whole, she looked over at the knife, still sitting on her pillow.
She was going to have quite a night.
