Once upon a time, there was a dog and a cat. They were friends. "Hey Gato," said the dog to the cat, "What do you want to do today?"

"I'm not sure. I've got a few ideas. What were you thinking, Doggo?"

He tilts his head back and forth as his ears flop around, "I could go for some adventure. How about the forest?"

"The magic forest? That's what I was thinking! Let's go."

And, so, the two set forth on their 'adventure'. Granted, the adventure wasn't that far away. In fact, it was just behind Gato's house, but to them, it was far away and mysterious. Being the curious kids they were, it was not long before they ducked under a branch they hadn't ever before and pushed aside a veil of willow branches to find a small clearing with the light shining down on a stump with a gnarled stick resting on it. "A Magic Wand!"

and then we went over to it and brought it back to our house.
-=-
At first we didn't know what to do with it but then we chose to mess around with it.

We spun it around in circles, seeing if that would do something.

Nope.

Triangles?

Nothing.

Blowing on it, and giving it a gentle little kiss to encourage it didn't really work either. As it turned out, the wand wasn't really magical at all.
-=-
"We'd been lied to about the wand." Doggo broke the wand in half. Later, when Doggo and Gato went to bed, they couldn't stop hearing voices, telling them what they did was wrong. ''You shouldn't have broke it," a voice said.
-=-
Doggo ran out of his house and over to Gato's house.

"Gato! Gato," Doggo says bursting into the cat's house.

"What is it, Doggo," Gato rubs their tired eyes.

"The voices. They are telling me we shouldn't have broken the wand."

"I know. They are telling me, too. What should we do?"

"I don't know. Maybe we should take it back to where we found it in the forest?"

"That's as good an idea as mine."

And, so, the duo set forth once again into the magic forest, this time with the broken wand in tow. It was tricky at first to find their way as they had been there many times and couldn't pick out the new path they took the day before, but bit by bit they remembered and soon they were pushing aside the willow branches again. There they found another wand on the stump.

"Do you think we should take it?"

"No. We shouldn't. We didn't even know how to use the one we got. I'm going to put the one we have down next to it."

"Okay, if you're sure."

And they did. What they saw amazed them. The two wands merged into one and the voices quieted. With a spring in their step, they head back home and get a good night's sleep. And they both lived happily ever after.
