Easter Contest Entry for Ben300
(4/10/09)

BEEP! BEE. The alarm is quickly shut off before it wakes anyone else in the house. Sure enough, it’s still dark outside. A stuffed dragon rolls off his bed. The young man slides out of his bed and shivers. Not because of the chill in the air, but rather in excitement and anticipation of what is to come. He quickly slides on a t-shirt and pants in the dark. These are just as quickly followed by socks and sandals.

As he grabs his empty Easter basket his mom’s words from the night before whisper into his mind, “Simon, don’t go looking for eggs early. You might find the Easter Bunny.” He smiles as he makes his way down to the front door. Silently he opens the entry and slips out.

The beginning of sunrise turns the sky a light pink. Simon takes a deep breath of the fresh morning air and takes a step forward. He stops dead in his tracks.

He rubs his eyes to wipe the last of the tiredness and dreams out of his eyes. His eyes lock on it again to be sure. There in the middle of the grass is a black oblong hole. He steps closer, but it doesn’t move or grow. A little light gleams off of its surface. It’s not a black hole. That looks like plastic. “I just found my first egg.” He practically dances up to it.

As he picks it up, he smiles at the sticker design. “Some mixed up kid must have decorated this one. It has bunny ears and a dragon tail and a mix of the rest of the parts.” He laughs lightly to himself. “I wonder what’s inside.” He pops it open and a paper falls out. He puts the pieces in the basket and reaches down for the fallen prize.

He reads the note, “You were warned.”

His body begins to tingle. The sensation starts at the hands and starts working up his arms. He looks at them in surprise. The fingers begin to morph into white talons. His arms begin to pale as well. He notices lines appearing in his arms. As the tickling passes his shoulders, it pours into his frame down to his feet like a waterfall.

“Oh no! I’m transforming into something! I don’t want my clothes destroyed. I better get them off before I leave any evidence that I was out here.” With surprising dexterity he removes his outfit with no holes or tears.

By now the change has filled his legs and starts into his torso. He focuses back on his arm and sees the cracks are scales. A glance at his feet and legs turned claws confirms the diagnosis. “I’m becoming a white dragon.” Then it hits him, “A white dragon? What is a white dragon? Ice? I guess I’ll find out when I’m done.”

He goes back to watching the transformation as it fills his chest. “No manhood. Not surprising since most pictures don’t show that part.” Wings spring from his back, but they don’t hurt. Finally he feels his face changing and becoming more dragonish. Well, that’s it then. I’m a white dragon. He heads over to the front window to verify the image.

Once the tingling reaches the top of his head the feeling doesn’t go away. Suddenly, fire races down the outside of his body. From the top of his legs to the top of his head burns. But for some reason,  none of his limbs are affected.

He looks into the glass turned mirror. “Oh no. no. no. You’ve got to be kidding me.” A pink transparent cloth like substance starts covering his body. But that’s not what he notices. White bunny ears seem to be growing up out of the top of his head between his dragon ears.

With his new claws, he scratches and tears at them only causing himself pain. Then he looks down. “This is not possible.” A pink transparent leotard covers his body with strategic  opaque circles covering growing mounds. He turns to make sure. There it is. A small white cottony tail is attached just above his dragon tail.

He, or rather she, tries to take a step forward and nearly falls. She tries a few more times. Each time unsuccessful. “Legs aren’t that hard to move. It must be something else.” He tries to jump forward. She pulls it off with ease. RATTLE, RATTLE.

She notices the weight of her Easter basket. It is barely noticeable to her strong arms, but there it is. It is overflowing with plastic eggs. Then it dawns on her as the sky gets brighter, “Well, Simone. It looks like I’m the Easter Bunny … Dragon.” She hops off happily delivering eggs, hoping that she’ll revert back to normal when she’s done.
