Carolyn Jacobs woke up with an odd smile and a strange feeling rolling through her stomach and head “What a weird dream” she said to herself while staring up at her ceiling. . She shook her head and swung her legs out of her bed and onto the floor.
It was Saturday morning so the house was quieter than usual as he made her way down the hallway to the bathroom. As she stepped in and closed the door behind her, a quick thought passed through her mind “What if you look in the mirror and find out that it wasn’t a dream…it’s true”
She smiled as she walked over, almost creeping up on the mirror. For a split second, she almost thought it was true; but only for a split second. Her wide smile faded, covering up her spots where she was still waiting for her adult teeth to come in. “Darn it” the 9 year old said to her reflection. “That would have been fun”
Carrie brushed her teeth and brushed out her long brown hair before she went downstairs. She was the first one up so she climbed up on the counter to get a bowl down for her breakfast. After balancing on her knees to get the bowl, she hopped down and got out her cereal and milk, pouring them both in and making sure she cleaned up the few milk drops on the table with a napkin.
She wanted to feel responsible, like she would do if she were a grown up like in her dream.
When she was almost done with her breakfast; she heard footsteps upstairs followed by a flush, then footsteps on the stairs coming down “Hi Mommy” she said seeing the figure in the door.
“Good Morning honey” Jennifer Jacobs replied smiling at her daughter. “I see you’ve already helped yourself”
“I got everything out by myself and cleaned everything up too” Carrie replied.
“Well, I’m proud of you” Jen said “What brought this on?”
“My dream last night” Carrie stated.
“Your dream told you to clean up after yourself…now that’s a dream I like” Jen laughed.
“No, it wasn’t that exactly” Carrie said swinging her feet back and forth under the table “I dreamt that I was grown up”
“Really!”
“Yeah, it was great! I was an adult. I was big and I think I was pretty but I was definitely the adult and I had a daughter…I remember seeing her and talking with her…she was cute and missing some teeth just like I am now and she had her hair pulled back in a ponytail and it was really long and it would sway back and forth when she walked but…”
“But what honey?” Jen asked.
“It’s just; there was one part of the dream where I asked her something. I remember it clearly but it doesn’t make any sense” Carrie said seriously.
“What was it?” Jen asked.
“Well; I was standing in a kitchen” she looked around “It was this kitchen. And I was cutting up some vegetables and my daughter came in all happy and I asked her ‘So are you still mad about not getting to be the Mom anymore?’”
Jen slouched and turned to look at her daughter, a confused look on her face “Really?”
“Yeah…weird isn’t it” Carrie said and giggled.
A tingle ran down Jennifer’s spine.
“It’s just a silly dream…dreams don’t mean anything” Jennifer said waving a hand and heading to the fridge.
“I know Mommy…it was just a happy dream” Carrie replied. She hopped down out of her chair and dashed off into the living room.
“Don’t go too far away” Jen called out “You said you’d help me around the yard today”
“I will” Carrie replied and Jen could hear the TV turn on.
Jennifer was shaking now that she was by herself. She eased herself into one of the dining room chairs trying to take long slow breaths and keep her hands from trembling. She closed her eyes and kept telling herself “Calm down…it doesn’t mean anything…it’s just a dream…”
Jennifer swallowed hard and griped the table until her knuckles turned white. She kept replaying over and over the part of her own dream where she was a little girl again with her hair pulled back into a long ponytail. And when she bounces into the kitchen and sees her Mommy cutting vegetables she hears her ask “So are you still mad about not getting to be the Mom anymore?”
Jennifer had woken up that morning with the strangeness of the dream tight at her fingertips, distant yet close. That scene was clear but the rest of the dream leading up to that point was murky. She could see the tall woman at the counter; she was pretty and obviously Mom aged whereas she was small and obviously a child. It was the fact that they had both dreamt it and it really did look like it played out in their own kitchen.
She stood up “You’re freaking yourself out over nothing…grow up” she told herself.
Jennifer stood up and forced herself to smile. She shook her head as she walked around the kitchen. She was barefoot and wearing an oversized button down flannel shirt that she slept in as she paced the room, the irrational fear within in her diminishing. “Of all the stupid things to get freaked out about; you have to go and think you’re going to switch places with your kid”
Jennifer got dressed in old jeans and a light long sleeved shirt. She wanted to get everything pulled up and put away for winter since she was thinking that this bright and sunny early November day might be one of the last nice ones before bad weather settled in.
By the time she came back down, Carrie was already outside. Jennifer smiled as she put on her socks and a pair of rubber boots. Carrie stood by the shed with her hands on her hips “Where should we start?” she asked.
They worked side by side for the next three hours until the chore was done. After a shower, Jennifer laid down on her bed.
“Oh it sucks getting old” she said without lifting her head as she heard her daughter come in.
“You’re not old Mom” Carrie told her.
“Tell that to my back and the backs of my legs…I’m aching” Jen said sitting up. “I’m going to be 40 in about 3 years…you don’t think that’s old?”
“Nope!” Carrie said climbing up on the bed. Jennifer ruffled her daughter’s hair, still able to smell the faint scent of leaves and sweat there. “You should go take a shower too…you stink”
Carrie giggled but obliged hopping down and dashing off.
As she heard the shower going, Jennifer dozed off.
The dream was even more vivid this time.
Jennifer found herself walking down the upstairs hallway in her house but she could tell she had come out of the room at the end…Carolyn’s room and not the master bedroom by the stairs.
She had to look up to see the pictures and she could only see the top of her head as she passed by the mirror but she wasn’t stopping; she kept going.
Jennifer peaked into her Mom’s bedroom looking for her but she wasn’t there. She noticed the room was the same, same paint, drapes, bedspread; but she knew it wasn’t her room anymore.
She kept going down the stairs which seemed very steep to her. She kept her hand on the railing as she went down feeling her ponytail bounce behind her.
Once on the wood floor of the landing, she looked down and saw her very small feet at the bottom of skinny legs encased in white leggings. She saw she was wearing a denim top but she had no curve to break it up. She kept walking towards the kitchen where she heard the chopping.
Jennifer broke out into a smile when she saw her Mom standing at the counter chopping vegetables “Hi Mommy” she heard herself say in a high voice.
Her Mom looked up and smiled changing her posture “Hi Honey” she replied as Jennifer moved to a chair.
She hopped up on to it, her feet dangling over the floor but she swung her feet back and forth contentedly as her Mom asked “So are you still mad about not getting to be the Mom anymore?”
This time, Jennifer shook her head No “No, I mean I guess I miss some things about it but it’s also pretty cool to get to be a kid again”
She looked up to see the warm smile radiating back at her as she asked “Are you mad about not getting to be a kid anymore?”
“Nope!” Her Mom answered quickly and assuredly. “Not. At. All…I’m happy with how this all worked out”
Jennifer paused and looked around at how big everything was but she found herself smiling “Yeah…me too” she said but she could also tell in the dream that she didn’t entirely mean it.
That was when she woke up.
Jennifer’s eyes popped open; she was breathing fast and sweating despite the cool breeze blowing in through the open window in her bedroom. She sat up quickly, her lower back sang out as she rose up, palms down elbows locked. She swung her legs out and off the bed.
Landing, she made sure she was still tall. She grabbed at her breasts to see if they were still there and she checked her brown hair to see if it was still cut at the base of her neck or if it had grown long enough to put it into a ponytail. All checked out for her.
She could hear the PlayStation going downstairs and knew her daughter was playing so she took a few minutes to compose herself.
Jennifer had fallen asleep in just an oversized t-shirt and shorts. She now decided to get dressed in a pair of Lulu Roe leggings and a long denim shirt until the shirt choice became a bit uncomfortable to her. She changed into a plain green u neck top instead.
“Mom” Carrie called out “Come see the house I’m building in Minecraft; it’s really cool!”
Jennifer turned and went into the living room where she saw Carrie sitting cross legged on the floor staring up at the TV, her thumbs moving endlessly. “That does look awesome” she said.
Jennifer lingered, staring at the game on the screen. She bit on her thumbnail lightly until she realized she was thinking about how she would build the house; she wanted to play.
“Do you want to play Mom?” Carrie asked looking up from the floor at her fidgeting Mother.
Jennifer was shifting her weight back and forth and just constantly moving as she stood watching the TV “Um…no” Jen finally answered. She sat down on the couch behind Carrie and crossed her legs. She watched for a few more minutes getting more and more into it eventually tucking her legs up underneath her cross legged so the two sat identically.
A few minutes later, Carrie shut her game down.
“Oh…you’re stopping?” Jennifer said.
Carrie shrugged “Yeah, I got tired of playing; I was getting bored”
“So I wanted to ask you about your dream last night” Jennifer said as she straightened out her legs and sat up.
Carrie sat down in a chair a few feet away from her but she smiled and bounced as she did it “Sure!”
“Well; it sounded like you told me about the end of it but how did it begin? Were you already big when it started or did you start out little?”
Carrie thought about it “I started out big I think. I remember waking up and I remember I was in your room and in your bed but I got out of bed and I was big. I got dressed and…I put on some clothes that fit me but…”
“But what?”
“They were clothes that I know I’ve seen you wear” Carrie said. “I know I picked out your blue top to wear because it’s my favorite of yours and that’s what I was wearing in my dream.
Jennifer said nothing but knew in her dream her Mom was wearing a blue top.
“So anyway…I go out into the hall and I’m at the top of the steps and everything seems so much smaller to me and I go right down the stairs. I walk through the living room and I shake my head and say ‘I’ve told her how many times she has to clean up’ when I see the PS4 controller in the middle of the floor. And then I start getting out stuff in the kitchen and I’m just working away on a big pot of soup I’m making because it’s cold and rainy out and we’re going to be staying in all day and then my daughter comes in and that’s what I told you about earlier”
Jennifer tried to smile but it came out as more of a smirk.
“Why?” Carrie asked.
“Just curious I guess” Jennifer said.
“Yeah…me too” Carrie said “I wonder how I got big all of a sudden”
“And I got little” Jennifer said.
“What?” Carrie asked “What did you say?”
Jennifer blushed and Carrie just stared as Carrie pestered her “What did you say Mom? What?”
“Look; I think I had the same dream only in my dream; I’m little” Jennifer admitted.
“No way!” Carrie said so Jennifer described her dreams and they matched Carrie’s down to their clothing and wording.
“But what does it mean?” Carrie asked. “If the house is the same but I’m an adult and you’re a kid…why would we dream about that?”
“I don’t know” Jennifer said.
“Unless somehow it’s going to happen” Carrie said “And the dream is actually going to be real”
“That’s impossible honey; people don’t just change ages with each other. It’s never happened in real life; it’s physically impossible for me to suddenly change into a 9 year old and you to grow up into a 37 year old in a matter of minutes” Jennifer said.
Carrie was stumped “But isn’t it really weird for us to both dream the same thing?”
“Yes it is but no matter how weird that is; the thought of us completely flipping roles with the other is even weirder and even more impossible…you can’t be my Mom…just no” Jennifer stated.
“But what if I was?” Carrie pressed. “Even if I just had to act like it because I did grow up and you turned back into a kid. You couldn’t drive or have a job or be the one with the money…everybody just looks for an adult in those spots…they’d look at me”
“Okay, I’ll play along” Jennifer said. “Do you think you’d get those skills from me? Do you think you’d get the ability to drive?”
“Do you think you’d lose everything back to the 4th grade?” Carrie countered.
Jennifer stopped and thought about it “That would be scary” she admitted “To lose everything I’ve learned and go all the way back”
Jennifer shuddered but the look in Carrie’s eyes was one of yearning, one of want.
Jennifer got up and walked out of the room. She headed to the basement to start a load of laundry. She sorted out clothes, picking up a pair of her daughter’s jeans, she held them up to her body. Her hips stuck way out and they only came down to the middle of her shins “What if these were mine? What if these fit me?”
She continued picking up an orange shirt of Carrie’s and holding it up. She grabbed her black bra, size 38D and before tossing it in thought, “What if I couldn’t fill this out anymore?”
For a moment, the room looked huge to her before she shook her head and it refocused back up.
Jennifer moved a tote filled with clothes Carrie had recently outgrown. It seemed a constant thing; every few months more clothes would join the tote until they had enough to give to Goodwill but it was the two items on top, pressed up against the side that caught her eye; a denim top and a pair of white leggings.
The world swam around her and Jennifer had to close her eyes to keep her balance.
She opened the tote with a dry mouth and picked up the two items “I can’t believe these are too small for her already…this shirt is supposed to be big”
She also knew that while she liked the shirt, Carrie had not and had probably snuck it down just to get it out of her closet.
While she went downstairs, Carrie had gone up.
For some reason she felt compelled to go into her Mom’s room and look for the blue top she liked and she saw herself wearing in the dream. It wasn’t hard to find. It sat right on top of her Mom’s shirt drawer and Carrie smiled as she pulled it out. She went down another drawer and found the pair of jeans she knew she had on. They were the lightest pair her Mom owned so they were easy to recognize.
When she heard footsteps coming up the basement stairs, Carrie took the clothes and ran down to her room. Her Mom was coming all the way up so she hastily tossed them into her bottom drawer.
Jennifer was careful as she went up to her room carrying the denim top and white leggings. She made sure she didn’t see her daughter as she brought them into her own room and put them in the corner of her closet.
“This is crazy” Jennifer said as she stepped back. “I need to get out of the house and clear my head of all this nonsense”
She stepped out and saw Carrie coming out of her room “Do you want to go out to dinner?”
“Sure!” she piped up.
They got into the car and for just a brief moment as she pulled out her keys, Jennifer thought “She could be driving us” before shaking the thought out of her mind and starting up the car.
They had dinner at Murphy’s dinner where Jennifer had a burger and fries while Carrie had the chicken tenders off the kids menu. They took their time and then walked up and down the block checking out the stores.
It was getting dark by the time they got to the used bookstore but since it was their favorite place on the block, they lingered.
Jennifer was taking her time so as to not go back home. Her mind felt free and loose while she was out looking around and Carrie seemed to be enjoying herself too.
Both were tired by the time they got back home. While Carrie cleaned up and headed to bed quickly, Jennifer made sure she had a few glasses of wine before bed to try and make sure no dreams came that night.
It didn’t work.
As Jennifer tossed and turned, the dream started even earlier. She was standing in front of Carrie who simply looked up at her and put her hand up. Jennifer saw a black stone in her hand before she clasped it closed over top of it and said “I wish I was an adult and you were just a little kid”
At those words, terror gripped Jennifer’s heart. She felt herself begin to shrink and saw Carrie begin to grow. “Why would you say that?!” she heard herself yell out in shock and terror “Look at us! We’re going to switch places!”
“I know! Isn’t it awesome?!” Carrie called out in a different sounding voice as Jennifer watched her growing up taller and taller compared to her.
“No it’s not awesome!” Jennifer cried out and bounced. She could feel her clothes billowing on her shrinking body. She flapped her arms, the sleeves of her oversized flannel shirt now coming down over her hands “We have to stop! We have to change back! You have to wish us back to normal before this goes too far!”
“I can’t” Carrie replied now taller and growing older in the face.
“What?!” Jennifer squealed feeling her chest collapse inward just as she watched Carrie’s bulge out impressively. Carrie’s pajamas were super tight on her legs and rising up, tearing at the seams along the sides. Her stomach was exposed and as her chest grew, the sleeves of her shirt tore at the shoulders.
“The stone was only good for one wish and see…” she held out her large hand “It’s already gone”
“No, no, no, no, no, no…what have you done…we’re going to be stuck like this!” Jennifer said shrinking down even further.
That was when she woke up gasping for air.
Jennifer rose up and sat upright in bed. She felt her breasts moving but she still grabbed at them to make sure they were still there. She climbed out of bed and went to the mirror to reassure herself that her face still looked the same “Still an adult” she mumbled trying to slow down her heart.
It was only 4 A.M. so she tip toed her way down the hall to her daughter’s room and peered inside.
Carrie was sound asleep but what worried Jen was that she was wearing the PJ’s that she had just seen rip apart in her dream. She too was wearing an oversized flannel shirt.
Carrie was asleep but in her dream, she saw a black stone sitting on her nightstand. She grabbed it and heard a voice in her head say “Make the dream come true” just before she woke up.
The room was dark but her clock said it was 4:02. The house was quiet but she turned on the small lamp on her nightstand and gasped; sitting there was a black stone.
“Where did this come from?” she thought as she stared at it afraid to pick it up at first. She heard the voice inside her head say “Make the dream come true” and she reached over and grabbed it.
It felt like any other stone, just hard and cold but she also knew it hadn’t been there the night before and now it was “What’s going on?” she mumbled “I think I’m supposed to use it since it came to me and the dream seemed so real”
Carrie swung her skinny little legs out from under the covers as she clutched the stone. She heard the sink run in the bathroom next to her room and then footsteps outside “Mommy’s up!” she realized.
Carrie rushed to the door and swung it open surprising and scaring her Mom, who gasped and jumped at the opening door.
“Ah!” she yelped and jumped seeing her daughter in the doorway to her room “You scared me!”
“Sorry Mom” Carrie said. She flipped on the hallway light and both had to squint to readjust their eyes to the bright light.
“What are doing up at this hour?” Jennifer asked.
“I had the dream again Mom” Carrie said chilling Jennifer to the bone. “The dream where I turn into your Mom…”
“What?” was all Jennifer managed to say before Carrie continued.
“Yeah but this time it showed me how me how to do it” she held her hand out reveling the black stone.
“Carrie…put that down right this instant” Jennifer said softly, the air had left her lungs and she could barely muster a whisper “It’s dangerous”
“No it’s not Mom” Carrie said “I didn’t have this rock last night so since it showed up and we’ve both dreamed about this, I think it’s supposed to happen”
“No it’s not honey” Jennifer said “Put the rock away…just drop it”
Instead of dropping it, Carrie closed her hand around it.
Time went into slow motion. Jennifer’s eyes bulged but instead of reaching out to possibly slap the stone from her daughter’s hand, she froze.
“I wish I was an adult and you were just a little kid”
Carrie said the words and Jennifer heard them clearly. Jennifer’s jaw dropped and terror gripped her heart in a tight clamp. Her eyes super focused, she saw her daughter shiver and shudder and lift up beginning to grow just as she felt her stomach drop and flip like she was on a roller coaster.
Looking down to the ground, she watched Carrie’s foot begin to grow larger “Why would you say that?!” Jennifer said “Look at us! We’re going to switch places!” she yelled just like in her dream.
Carrie lifted and flexed her shoulders against the suddenly tight fabric of her PJ’s “I know, isn’t it awesome!” she replied with childlike wonder in a deepening voice.
Jennifer was consumed by shock and terror. She could tell she was shrinking; the walls were getting higher around her; Carrie was also getting taller in front of her “No it’s not awesome!” she cried out feeling the sleeves on her shirt loosen and drop down beginning to cover up her hands.
Carrie’s stomach floated up inside her as she began to grow. Her shirt lifted up enough to feel a crack of air at her belly. Her pants dipped down at the waist and began to creep up her calves tightening down as they went up. She could feel the carpet fibers rub against the bottoms of her feet as they spread out growing larger as she dug her toes down.
The seams along her inner thighs popped wide open, soft flesh spilled out into the cool air as weight and roundness grew outward. The seams continued to tear open along the outside of her calves and then her thighs.
By the time she looked up, Carrie saw fear and terror in her Mom’s eyes as she shrank down closer and closer to her height. Her Mom’s already oversize flannel shirt billowed around her shrinking body like a sail.
Jennifer flapped her arms up and down trying to keep her hands free but it was impossible as she lost size and weight and body mass rapidly. “We have to stop! We have to change back! You have to wish us back to normal before this goes too far!”
Carrie felt her top burst open at the shoulders and she stumbled in response, staggering back a step a look of wonder on her face as she saw her Mom’s face begin to change its look. Her Mom was now even with her in height and she looked different, she looked younger, like a teenaged version of her Mom.
Jennifer felt her hair begin to grow out longer. Her face was tingling as her features began to change and grow smaller and regress to a more youthful visage. She could see maturity creeping into her daughter’s face.
Carrie’s features began to change, maturing and growing larger as her hair began to lift up and thicken.
Carrie opened up her hand. Her fingers looked longer and thicker and the palm of her hand was larger too but the stone she had been holding was gone “I can’t” she said, her voice even deeper than before.
“What?!” Jennifer cried out in a higher pitch and whinier tone, squealing as she felt her chest collapse inward. Her vision about not being able to fill up a 38D bra was now true. Her breasts were barely bumps and still retreating on her concaving chest.
Just as she felt her own chest disappearing, Jennifer watched as Carrie’s suddenly burst upon the scene, ballooning out impressively as they tore through her shirt, bounding out and bouncing forward in all their glory.
Carrie’s hips flared and her ass inflated outward. She showed her Mom her empty hand “The stone was only good for one wish and see…” her hand continued to grow and change as she held it out “…it’s already gone”
“No, no, no, no, no, no…what have you done…we’re going to be stuck like this!” Jennifer said shrinking down even further.
She now had to look up at Carrie and in dawning horror, realized that she would be looking up to her for a very long time to come. “Carrie?” she said in a confused voice.
Jennifer shuddered as her hips and ass deflated and sucked inward. Her legs were skinny pale little twigs sticking out from the bottom of her nightshirt. She could feel her panties barely hanging, about to drop free.
She could barely see her small feet with her shirt in the way, but what she could see was all wrong to her. Her toes were tiny little things, smooth and soft but way too small. Her short little legs were also smooth and hair and bump free.
She had no curves left on her adolescent frame, her stomach was flat again but so was her chest. Her torso swam in the huge shirt. She struggled to get a hand free only to almost faint at seeing how tiny her fingers and hand was compared to how it had been. “I’m turning into a little kid!” she said, her voice high pitched and childish.
“Mom?” Carolyn said confused, her voice deep and mature. She leaned over and had to sweep her hair back off her face as she did looking down at the small girl before her.
Carolyn looked down at her body tearing through the thin rags of her child sized pajamas. Her feet were wide and large. Full and long toes with wide nails greeted her eyes and as she traced up, she saw full and muscled calves and round and soft thighs. Her body had developed a full set of womanly curves.
Her hips jutted out and her ass was large and round and tight. Her waist was wider and her stomach sat a bit soft but was still in good shape beneath her massive and impressive breasts.
Carolyn gave them a quick lift and heave as she examined her large erect nipples and wide pink areolas at their front. Her hands were long and elegant at the ends of larger and longer arms.
As she examined the childish face looking up at her, she could only imagine what her own face now looked like.
Carolyn tentatively touched around her face feeling her higher cheeks, fuller lips, wider chin, stronger jaw, bigger nose and larger eyes. She ran her hands up over her forehead and ears before running her nails through her thick hair. “Jenny?” she finally said.
Jenny looked up at the adult woman before her at hearing her name. Carolyn looked nothing like she had to her; she no longer could possibly even be her daughter; she was so big and so much older than her.
“We switched places” she thought “She’s my Mom now”
“Mom?” Jenny said looking up.
Carolyn smiled and nodded “Yeah…I guess I really am now”
Jenny stared before she yelled out “NO!” as loud as she could and burst out into tears “You’re not my Mom! That’s impossible! I want to change back!”
As Carolyn went to comfort her, Jenny shoved her back and ran down to hall to her room, slamming the door behind her as hard as she could.
Carolyn was ready for the shove and with so little experience in a body that size, she fell over backwards on her ass.
Jenny stood with her back against the door, panting. Her mind was racing but it was racing in the wrong direction. Her thoughts were getting less mature, her vocabulary was diminishing, and her IQ was dropping as she forgot more and more knowledge. “No…” she pleaded “Make it stop…please stop…I don’t wanna be a kid again!”
She stomped her foot and looked around, surprised at how big everything in her room looked to her now. Her bed was so high up and huge. The dresser and the mirrors above them were imposing and a glimpse to her closet made her stomach roll “The only thing in there that would fit me now is…the outfit I pulled out of the bin yesterday” she realized flashing to the denim top and white tights she had seen in her dream.
Carolyn hauled herself up off the ground surprised at how much tougher it was for her. Her body was less limber and so much larger and moved in such a different way than she was used to. Her pendulous breasts swayed along with her hips and she easily ripped the tattered clothes off her body.
“Whoa” she said seeing how small everything looked to her. She put her hand up and let her fingertips graze across the ceiling unable to stop the grin on her face.
“My God my boobs are freakin huge!” she said as she eased back down flat footed and feeling their weight pull her forward.
She laughed to herself and turned into the bathroom. She gasped at seeing her reflection “Holy Shit…I’m old…I’m grown up…I’m Mom’s age” she said taking in her adult reflection from the mirror “I am 37 years old…just like that…Fuck me…” she trailed off taking in her body. She bent forward to get a look at her development down below. Her fingers pulled and separated and probed briefly making her tingle all over.
She looked up and squared her shoulders before she stopped. “Holy shit” she repeated realizing how much more she suddenly knew about everything “I’ve got Mom’s knowledge…her education and thinking are mine”
She grabbed her Mom’s robe from the back of the bathroom door and put it on. “My hair’s longer than Mom’s…but her hair is really long now” she thought back to the vision from the dream of the ponytail the little girl wore “It fits…”
Carolyn stifled a laugh “We really did switch places” She went into her room amazed at how small everything looked “The only thing I can wear are the clothes I saw myself wearing in the dream, but I need a damn bra before that happens”
Jenny was crying in her room, sobbing and letting big tears drop from her eyes “I don’t know what to do?” she whined “I can’t believe this…I think I’m stuck like this forever”
She heard a knock on the door “Jenny? Honey?”
“GO AWAY!” she screamed “I HATE YOU! YOU DID THIS TO ME!”
On the other side of the door, Carolyn backed up and tiptoed down the stairs.
She went all the way down to the basement and grabbed the laundry from the dryer. She carried it back up and went into her room with it. Once there, she had access to underwear that would fit her. The 38D bra was even a bit tight on her but it was good enough for now as she put on the jeans and blue top.
Jenny had worn herself out. She lay on her back in the middle of the floor, a tiny body inside a huge shirt. She wiped her eyes with the sleeves before she slowly sat up. She crossed her legs beneath her and was completely covered by the shirt “I’m a kid again” she told herself. “I’m so screwed…I can’t drive I can’t work…Nobody will believe me if I told them…my money, my house…everything I’ve ever worked for…it can’t even belong to me now…I can’t even remember stuff anymore already”
She closed her eyes and tried to think about her job; gone. She tried to think about school but all she saw was elementary school; the 4th grade was her level.
She shut her eyes even tighter and thought about Carrie “Mom” she mumbled. She always saw her as bigger. She saw all kinds of scenes with her, she was always the adult to her and trying to remember her as a kid only put her in one scene; the part where they swapped. She couldn’t see her as a kid outside of that moment which was ingrained in her head but every other memory had shifted.
Jenny stood up and began to wrestle her way out of her flannel shirt. She went to her closet and grabbed the small clothes she had stashed there the day before.
She held them up and looked down at her very different looking body before putting them on. “At least I’m covered up in something that fits” she said. Her long brown hair was a mess so she grabbed a brush and worked it out until it was soft and smooth before she pulled it up into a high ponytail.
The repetitive brushing of her hair calmed her down but as she looked into the mirror, she realized that she had become the very image of the little girl from the dream. “I’m not the Mom anymore” she told herself “She is and I can’t change that”
Carolyn had to bend down to get her full image in the mirror in her childish room but she knew the image from her dream. As her mind continued to explore itself, expanding on thoughts and knowledge like never before she heard the rain begin outside. A slow but steady pounding that was forecast to last all day.
It wasn’t even 6 o’clock yet but just 2 hours since their lives had flipped upside down, both of them were beginning to accept their new realities.
Jenny opened her door and peered out into the hallway. She stepped out and walked slowly but deliberately down the hall. The door to the bedroom was cracked and she saw her Mom sitting on the bed looking out the window.
Carolyn jumped up and smiled “Oh Honey…how are you doing? I’m glad to see you”
Jenny nodded and nervously shifted her weight back and forth, she ran her tongue through the open hole where she was missing her upper incisor. She shrugged “I’m not sure how I’m doing…I’m all confused”
“So am I honey” Carolyn said standing up. She towered over Jenny now and just wanted to comfort her. She came over and Jenny didn’t back away as she first put her hands on her shoulders and pulled her in to hug her.
“Why did you say it?” Jenny finally asked.
“It just felt like I was supposed to say it” Carolyn admitted. “The dream was so strong and the rock appeared…I just thought we were supposed to do this”
“I think our minds swapped” Jenny said. “I can’t remember a lot of stuff I think I’m supposed to. I don’t have it in my head anymore”
“Our knowledge swapped but not our minds since we still know how we are and what happened to us” Carolyn corrected. “We’re still ourselves but I have the knowledge of a 37 year old…”
“And I’m stuck with the knowledge of a 9 year old” Jenny said pouting.
“Don’t worry: I’m going to take care of us” Carolyn told her. She closed her eyes and saw a vision of herself holding infant Jenny right after giving birth; impossible as it might seem to her, she saw it and could still feel it.
“This is my room now” Jenny said “We should switch rooms since you’re going to need my clothes and I’m going to need yours”
“I think that’s a good idea” Carolyn answered.
“I need to get some other items on Mom…can you give me a minute?” Jenny said.
Carolyn’s mouth dropped at being called Mom but Jenny just looked up at her. She knew what she had said and why she had said it “We have to see the dream out to its conclusion”
“Um…you’re right…you still have some of your wisdom and I think you always will” Carolyn admitted.
“I’m an adult trapped in a kids body with mostly a kids mind…what do you expect?” Jenny said.
Carolyn backed out of her room and stood in the hall as she heard drawers opening. Instead of lingering she headed downstairs to the kitchen. She got water into a large pot and turned on the stove to get it going to a boil before she got out vegetables and began cutting them up.
Soon enough, she heard footfalls on the stairs coming down. Carolyn’s heart jumped at seeing the exact scene she first remembered from her dream playing out as her daughter came bouncing into the kitchen; ponytail swaying.
Jennifer knew what she had to do as she entered the room.
Jenny broke out into a smile when she saw her Mom standing at the counter chopping vegetables “Hi Mommy” she heard herself say in a high voice.
“Not. At. All…I’m happy with how this all worked out”
Jennifer paused and looked around at how big everything was but she found herself smiling “Yeah…me too” she said but unlike in the dream when she said it this time for real, she meant it.
