Thank you to all the suggestions for how to take yesterdays CYOA! I wasn't expecting so many so I might have to set up a poll to decide, in the interest of fairness.

After a brutal imperial campaign and protracted negotiations, the surrender agreement imposed upon the Kethai was brutal and punitive.

First, their borders would be forced open, and humans granted passage through the mountains. (Since the terrain was treacherous, the Imperium would, of course, be required to construct the roads it loved so dearly). The animals were to cede several rich ore deposits (they lacked miners of their own, so Imperial labour would be brought in to work them). A portion of the population would be taken as slaves (on the proviso that those slaves be paid, and not made to do anything they did not wish to do).

Finally, the Kethai would be required to surrender their infrastructure to Imperial engineers, who would enforce a savage campaign of upgrades to sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, a fresh water system, and public health. In exchange for these punitive measures, the occupied animals agreed, under duress, to sign the treaty.

The human negotiators departed, smugly satisfied with the agreement they had penned, until they took the time to read it again. But by then, the ink was dry. It has since been observed that the low purr emitted by these creatures in close proximity to humans, including negotiators, has noticeably soporific effects. While not magic or overt mind control, it did leave them vulnerable to suggestion.

Before the borders could be resealed, Kethaian warriors had already begun migrating to human cities, where they discovered they could acquire almost anything simply by looking as adorable as possible, and have begun installing themselves as the beloved pets of wealthy households.
