The Màn Balls were developed by Silph Co., in conjunction with Bill, in the hope of promoting empathy and understanding between man and Pokémon. Utilizing a modification of the standard PC storage technology, the Màn Balls, when deployed against a human subject, initiate a controlled partial digitization. Their data is then integrated with that of a captured and digitally deconstructed Pokémon, allowing the human to be captured within a Ball, stored in a computer environment, learn TMs, or even Evolve!

The first 151 prototypes were gifted to Ash Ketchum, following his ascension over the Elite Four. Despite being created for good, their potential for abuse in the wrong hands made them a priority target for

Team Rocket and other rogue organizations.
