Maternal instincts are a fundamental aspect of mammalian behavior. In certain cases, these instincts manifest in extreme or maladaptive ways. In the wild, it is not uncommon for female mammals to adopt the young of another species, particularly in the aftermath of childbirth when maternal hormones peak. Some primates have even been observed abducting the offspring of others, if they lose their own, to sate their nurturing impulses.

Case #185 appears to be the human equivalent of this phenomenon—an individual whose maternal drive has become pathological. On the surface, she presents as a capable and respected individual: a skilled surgeon, a devoted wife, and a doting mother. Her demeanor is warm and charming, plying me with tea and biscuits when I visited her clinic until I was quite stuffed! She was delighted to chat at length about her family, proudly showing me photographs of the collegiate accomplishments of two of her daughters (when asked on the third, she stated that they were 'getting ready').

If the case hadn't been referred to me by the concerned relatives of her three ex-husbands, I would have taken them for nothing more than a happy, loving family. Extended analysis of #185 reveals her to be a compulsive motherer, compelled to care for those around them. Tragically, she was born sterile. Before meeting her first husband, she cared for twelve cats, nine dogs, and many other pets. Unfortunately, Husband #1 insisted that she dispose of them, which she did, depriving her of a healthy outlet for her affections.

From there, her attitude towards him changed, from husband-and-wife to mother-child. As I mentioned, she is quite charming. Using psychological manipulation and the leverage she held as the main breadwinner of the family, she progressively broke the man psychologically, convincing him to accept this new role, before moving on to rebuilding him physically. Behind the scenes of their suburban home, she turned her surgical talents on him, altering him over months into the physical representation of the child she desperately wants. By this point, she had manipulated Husband #1 into cutting contact with his family. Though family members visited several times to enquire as to his health, they failed to recognize the 'girl' present, and they only became aware that the conversion had taken place after #185 filed applications to divorce, reclassify and legally adopt Husband #1 as her daughter.

Shortly thereafter, she remarried. Marriage #2 was as happy as the first, with Husband #2 becoming a devoted father to his new step"daughter". Two years into the marriage, he disappeared, and "Daughter #2" emerged. The cycle repeated once more with her third husband - though in this instance, the timeline was even shorter, and his whereabouts remain unknown. Recently, she has taken a fourth husband.

Case #185 exhibits a severe and escalating pattern of behavior indicative of a pathological maternal fixation. The timeframe between marriages is shrinking, suggesting an intensification of her compulsions I'm unsure how to proceed. While clearly unwell, Case #185 is not my patient and does not consider herself mentally ill when pressed. When questioned about her former husbands, she displays no recognition of their prior identities, referring to them only as her daughters. This dissociative response suggests either an extreme level of self-delusion or a sophisticated psychological defense mechanism. It would require a court order to incarcerate her, for her own sake and those of her victims, but the grounds for it would be tenuous. She chooses her victims well - quiet, submissive men that she manipulates and gaslights into agreeing to the extensive cosmetic surgeries, covering her back with airtight consent forms. With the adoption process, she has crossed every T and dotted every I. Legally, they are her daughters. She has done nothing wrong in a judge's eyes.

It may be easier for me to send Husband #4 a discrete warning. Perhaps I can convince Child Protective Services to remove her former husbands from her care, though depriving #185 of them may worsen her behaviour
