Part Two:

Lytar’s claws scraped against the cavern floor as he scrambled backward, his tail lashing in panic. Before him stood the creature in his body, his sword in her hand, burning with his god’s righteous fire. In the polished silver breastplate, he caught his reflection - a wretched, sniveling kobold. This was not how it was supposed to end. He had always envisioned his death as a wonderful, glorious thing - felled by a thousand mighty foes, his name etched into the halls of paladin heroes.

Not like this. Not like this.

"Any last words, monster?" she smirked.

"No kill me!" he squealed, and turned tail.

The sword fell. It was over.

Or it would have been, had the kobold ever held a sword before. Accustomed only to crude bludgeoning weapons, she twisted the sword clumsily, and the flat of the blade twanged against Lytar's backside. The crack echoed through the chamber like a temple bell. Lytar shrieked, clutching his bare burning buttocks.

Before the kobold could correct her mistake, a woman's voice rang out.

"Lytar, we got what we came for. Leave these creatures be." The healer stepped into the cavern. Lytar’s heart soared. Celeste! Sweet, kind, merciful Celeste! She would save him!

He sprinted toward her, flailing his tiny arms.

"Kind girl! Sweet girl! You listen! No am kobold! Me am man! She am—no, me am—" His forked tongue tangled into knots. His tiny lizard brain was overheating beneath the strain of complex human language. "Take she crystal! Magic me am she! Take steal me!"

Celeste's brow furrowed. He flung himself for the safety of her bosom. She darted back in disgust, her foot intercepting his arc. He squealed as the sole of her foot slapped him down against the stone floor, and pinned him there. He groaned as her heel shifted, pressing down firmly against his hindquarters, ensuring he stayed put.

"That one is mine," the kobold hissed. The burning sword in her grip seemed almost to be forcing her forward. "Let me kill it and then we'll leave."

"I can't fault your zeal, Lytar, but you should temper it with mercy. Even for these vermin," Celeste replied cooly, grinding her heel firmly against Lytar's rear. "Look at the poor thing. They exist to be pitied, not hated."

Lytar could feel ever crack of the stone beneath as his breasts were compressed into the dirt. He wrenched his head upward to lock eyes with the usurper, exchanging looks of pure hatred.

"If we let him- err, her live..." the thief mused. "they'll use her to breed more. She'll become nothing more than an egg-laying beast. She'll have this whole warren repopulated within a year."

Lytar gasped. "I take back! N-no am leave me live! You kill me!" he pleaded.

The body-thief chuckled, wiping a speck of dust from a gleaming gauntlet. "You're right," she said, extinguishing the holy fire on his sword. She slid it back into his sheath. "Killing it would be too merciful."
