"Oooh, Barret, not here. We might be seen!" Tifa gasped breathlessly.
At the sound of her voice across the enclosure, Cloud stirred sluggishly in his bed of hay, letting out a relieved 'kweh!' at the knowledge he'd soon be free of this bird body. Wiggling out from beneath the warmth of the alpha male's wing, being careful not to wake the sleeping beast, Cloud shook the numbing fogginess from his mind. It was bad enough having to think with an animal brain the size of a walnut, and the sleep deprivation compounded it.
He hadn't dared sleep fully in days. The alpha male had been stabled alongside him and tested the resistance of its 'female' eagerly and constantly, eager to take her as its mate. Robbed of his arms and physical prowess, Cloud's only defense was to maneuver his exposed cloaca away from it, and peck and squawk and flap his stumpy wings at the powerful male.
In its own simple animal way, the alpha had been nothing short of gentlemanly. A virile specimen, it had never known a female to deny it before, let alone such a common yellow Chocobo as Cloud had been transformed into, and though it dwarfed her in stature and she trembled beneath the shadow of his wings, it backed down to her pitiful shows of resistance, cocking its head at the willful female with bemusement and fascination.
Had she simply submitted to him on the first night, she would been used and discarded like the rest of its harem. Now he craved only her and the clutch of eggs it sensed growing in her belly, but, knowing her brooding instincts would overwhelm her as it came closer to the time to lay, he was content to wait for her to submit to him of her own accord. Already Cloud was impulsively scraping the straw into circular nests with his claws, though he knew not why. Soon she'll beg to be fertilized, the alpha thought in anticipation, while the other females in the enclosures clucked in annoyance at being deneid the attentions of the lovestruck stud.
Another human voice answered Tifa. It took a moment for Cloud to place it within the claustrophobic walnut-brain but when he did, his plumage shivered in fear. It was his voice.
"Relax, baby, there's nothing to see us but animals here," the man laughed.
"I meant Cloud," Tifa replied.
"So did I. What's the difference?" the man laughed.
Cloud beak fell open. Beyond the enclosure's fence, Tifa stood in an intimate embrace with a man who resembled Cloud -the man who Cloud had been- in every way. "You make me wish I had four hands," he said, caressing her cheeks.
"You're a menace enough with two, Barret," she giggled. "Can't you keep Cloud's hands to yourself for five minutes?" She turned to look out over the paddock, her gaze passing smoothly over the stunned Cloud and the other birds. "Hm. Which do you suppose he is?"
"I'd recognize that plumage anywhere." Barrett pointed out Cloud's golden crest before running a self-satisfied hand through his own iconic, spiked blonde hair. "We're practically twins," he guffawed as the Chocobo stared at them over the fence with tremulous 'kwehs'. "Why don't you explain the situation to him?"
"Do you think he understands?"
"She understands alright," Barret grinned.
Tifa tried to meet the ex-Cloud's gaze, though feeling silly talking to such a vacant-eyed animal, her attention soon turned back to her lover as she spoke. "I was just missing you so much, Cloud. But you were down here and, well, Barret was just so available. And we can't have two of you around, so you'll just have to stay like that for a little longer." Cloud's kwehs of protestation fell on deaf ears. Tifa cuddled closer. "I couldn't bring myself to deprive Barret of your hands so soon. Not when he's been making such good use of them."
