Red XIII watched Tifa and Cloud from the undergrowth, drooling. His stomach gurgled emptily, hunger and guilt warring inside him. The years in Hojo's captivity had brought him to near starvation, and yet the group had found little opportunity to rest and eat since escaping Midgar, always moving on before the pursuing Shinra soldiers caught up with them.
Red XIII had been desperate for sustenance... And then Tifa had gone and morphed Cloud into a Chocobo. What was she thinking?! he thought furiously. He had just been starting to get to know Cloud, to respect the man who had rescued him from his imprisonment, and then... *poof*... In the blink of an eye, he had been transformed into half-a-tonne of prime, succulent, white meat.
Red XIII watched as Tifa lashed Cloud's harness to a post. She walked away, taking the morph materia out of her backpack.
Probably going to morph another boulder into a pile of birdseed to feed to that fat bird. It was clear that Tifa knew little about caring for Chocobo - she had been overfeeding Cloud since she transformed him, and Cloud had been nervous-eating, guzzling down whatever food was placed before him, whether seeds or worms or scraps from their hands they fed him for being a good mount. It was starting to show in the fat wiggle of his hindquarters. Even Barrett had noticed, commenting on how soft his seat was becoming whenever he mounted the ex-SOLDIER.
At least one of us is eating well, Red thought bitterly.
Tied to the post, alone, Cloud's squawks of protests died down to quiet clucks. His head darted this way and that as much as his bridle would allow, scouring the plain, while his oversized chicken legs compulsively scraped at the dusty dirt. He was worried about something. Red XIII could smell the fear of a frightened animal from a mile away. Bugenhagen might have raised his adopted grandson as a vegan but the predator instincts remained.
It was the eyes that got Red XIIIs blood pumping. Humans had eyes on the front of their heads, and Red found he could speak to them as equals, as fellow predators. The morph materia had shifted Cloud's eyes to the sides of his skull, as any other Chocobo. That configuration granted him a broader field of view, but their appearance screamed "prey animal" to Red's instincts. "Eat me!" they screamed.
One of Cloud's eyes, furtively scanning the horizon, locked onto Red. They were animal eyes, no sign of higher intelligence evident within them. He swiveled and cocked his head to try to fix both of his eyes on Red, still struggling to adapt to his altered vision after days in that form. There were times when Red questioned if Cloud's mind was still in there, so stupid the bird appeared.
Could he even be considered sentient? Red wondered. What was the distinction between an animal and a sentient being? Language? During his long imprisonment, Red had been careful to keep his ability to speak a secret, and Shinra had taken him to be nothing more than a beast. Cloud gave a quiet gobble in his throat, almost a whimper. Deprived of his language, could anybody truly say for certain that there was anything in that skull beyond a dumb, animal, walnut-sized brain? Were such distinctions not purely academic? If he looked like a duck, quacked like a duck, strutted his plump body about like a duck... was he not a duck?
Red licked the saliva off his jaws and stepped out from the grass.
"I hope I didn't scare you," he said apologetically. "Has your rider left you here all alone? How careless of her. Such a defenseless bird. Anything could happen to you..." He'd said it to reassure his friend that he was here to protect him, and yet the words sounded threatening when he spoke them. He moved nearer, his body held close to the ground. "You must be missing your arms, yes? Not a lot of use those chubby little wings would be in a fight. You must be feeling very vulnerable about now." Drool flowed from his jaws unnoticed. "Just a helpless morsel of food."
The stench of fear was on the chocobo now, as Red neared. It waggled its pointless winglets frantically, sending up a whirl of yellow feathers, yanking on the rope that held it pinned.
"I wonder, how much does Tifa need to morph you back into a man? Half a chocobo? A third?" Red XIII mused, ravenous hunger gnawing at his mind. "Perhaps just the carcass... What is a little nibble between friends, eh, Cloud? I need to stay strong if I'm to protect you, don't I? I need to eat. What about your legs? You don't need those."
Red's gaze wandered up its plump body and latched onto its neck. He pictured his incisors sinking deep into that soft, pliant flesh, the triumphant spray of hot fluid. The prey sensed his intent, moving her body so that her head was away from him, her rear presented. Her thick... juicy... meaty rear...
Red leaped, claws and teeth bared. Suddenly something massive and yellow burst from the trees, interposing itself between him and his lunch. He rebounded off its hard, muscular torso, narrowly avoiding disembowelment at the swipe of black claws.
Two tonnes of alpha male chocobo blocked the path, its wings spread defensively around the female. The massive cockerel reared up in a threat display and Red knew he was no match. He cast one last, longing look at the tiny female huddled beneath the protection of the cock's vast wings, pressed up against its powerful torso. Then he and fled.
He ran until he was sure the beast wasn't pursuing. He paused to catch his breath. Gradually the bloodlust fell from his eyes and he felt a hot rush of shame for what he'd put his friend through. He turned, intending to run back to apologise.
"There you are!" Tifa's voice exclaimed jubilantly. Red's eyes widened to see the woman approaching, leveling the morph materia at him. "I've been looking all over for you. I've thought of a way to make you much more transportable..."
