The sounds of my 18th birthday party fade behind, replaced by the animal noises of the long grass as I head for Viridian City with nothing but a Pokeball on my hip and a hope in my heart. At last I'm of age and ready to try my luck against the Gyms.
"Little bro, wait up!"
I turn to see a streak of orange heading down the trail towards me - a growlithe! How rare! Her powerful body bounced as she bounded closer. The urge to capture her filled me, knowing such a creature would surely give me a head start, but alas - I only had one Pokeball and it was already filled. Still, it was worth a battle! I threw my ball into her path and my starter Pokemon burst out to block her.
The Growlithe stared down at my Metapod in dismay. She tapped it lightly with her toe, and it fell over in the dirt, immobile.
"Metapod, bro?" she scoffed. "You chose Metapod as your starting Pokemon? Jeez, you need my help even more than I thought."
My jaw drops open as I recognize her condescending tone. "Jason?!"
She grins. "You think I'd let my little brother go out into the wide world on his own? I barely made it back alive myself. You won't last five minutes once the sun goes down." Stepping over my immobile metapod, she dropped her heavy backpack at my feet with a jangle of pots and pans. "So I planned ahead. I snuck into Professor Coak's laboratory, borrowed his Pokeswapper and the strongest Pokemon in his collection." She gives a proud pirouette, her fluffy tail rising above his curvaceous haunches. "What do you think to me? With me by your side, you'll breeze through the first three Gyms easy."
"What do I think? I think you should stop treating me like a little kid, bro," I sulk, burning with humiliation as my Metapod hardens on the ground beneath her. "This is about me becoming a man, learning to stand on my own two feet. It doesn't work if you carry me."
"Your Metapod stands on its feet better than you ever will, bro," she teases with a snigger. "Human, Pokemon, what difference does it make, so long as you're giving the orders and I'm following them?"
I can't believe what he's offering. To leave his home and his young family behind and travel with me for months... A mixture of eagerness, wounded pride, and brotherly love vie within me. I shake my head. "I can't. I won't. It's cheating. And besides, you've probably got five minutes before the Professor and Mom come running down that path to drag you back."
She grins wolfishly, unfurling her hand to show a vacant Pokeball. "Not if you capture me, bro. Then I'll be your property, and they won't be able to do shit. Go on... You know you want to. I'll make it easy for you. I won't even struggle."
