"There's rubbing alcohol in one of the cupboards if you need it," Doctor Neumann said apologetically, sheathing his claws with a little difficulty.
As he'd anticipated, his feline instincts had reacted explosively to the human seizing him by the back of the neck. The sleeves of the lab assistant's lab coat hung in tattered but thankfully, on inspection, no skin was broken.
"Put the blood sample in the centrifuge and set it spinning," Neumann instructed. "In the meantime, I'd best introduce you to the rest of the science team. What's left of them anyway. This way."
He deftly hopped down from the workbench, padding his way across the sprawling laboratory. Following the COVID pandemic seven years ago, the facility had been specially constructed, deep within the Center for Disease Control, in anticipation of another such outbreak. A few billion dollars had been set aside for equipment to help analyze and combat a contagion, and now here that equipment sat, cutting edge, gleaming, and unused. At full capacity, the facility might have housed hundreds of researchers working together, but the containment break had seen it sealed with less than a dozen inside.
Doctor Neumann's ears perked up. As they neared an area of the laboratory where thick, plexiglass windows looked out on the world, the lab assistant became aware of a deep purr. A bulky autoclave machine stood there, activated and emitting a stream of warm air. A woman had draped across its outlet vents, her short blonde fur fluttering in the breeze. She had positioned herself within a shaft of sunlight falling across the machine, and her golden tail swished with satisfaction.
Neumann clucked his tongue in disapproval. "A pity you have to meet Doctor Svensson first. Although he does make an effective study into the effects of infection on the psyche. Believe it or not, Svensson was once an upstanding scientist. He sat on multiple ethics committees, if you'd believe it. I fear the infection has killed off the moral center of his brain."
Doctor Svensson yawned and stretched her long, lithe limbs, though her eyes remained clothes. "You're not still going on about that silly virus, are you?" she said dreamily. "Let it be."
Neumann's tail bristled. "The Svensson I knew would never abdicate his responsibilities to the global community. He would not rest until his job was done. And yet here you lie, sunning yourself," he said contemptuously. "You are our best epidemiologist. We need you analyzing the data, tracking the spread of this thing!"
Svensson considered a shrug but decided it was too much effort. "I already ran the numbers. There's seven billion humans in the world. Nobody will miss a few billion."
"You callous fiend!" Neumann spluttered. "If the man you were could see you now, he would be ashamed. Do you not care for anyone but yourself? Think of your wife. Think of your children!"
"As a matter of fact, I am thinking of my children," Svensson said, opening one eyelid and fixating her slitted pupil on the lab assistant. "I'm thinking of making a few more..."
"Shameless," Neumann tuttered, leading his assistant on. "I want you to keep Svensson on a short leash. We will need his expertise, though how we'll motivate him to work, I can't say."
