Why did I have to choose a plant type?! Rowan cursed himself as he plodded towards Viridian City in ever-slowing steps.
Everything had been fine at first, after Professor Coak's machine had swapped the bodies of the trainer and Pokemon. The weepinbell's stats had been excellent, and Rowan had exalted in the strength in his sinewy limbs of wood. He'd set out from Pallet Town at once, taking a lesser trodden shortcut in his eagerness to make it to the first two gyms, knowing plant type would make swift work of them, while the weepingbell in his body remained behind to become acquainted with human existence.
But out on the road, the hot morning sun beat down. An intoxicating lethargy came over him, the overwhelming urge to simply stop beside a stream and raise his leafy limbs to praise that glorious golden orb in the sky.
The more he tried to plow on, the more his body fought him. His leg caught on a root, he thought, making him stumble. Looking down, he saw no root except his own, as his woody toes stretched out, writhing and worming their way into the rich earth beneath. He could sense the cool depths of the soil, and taste its loamy, nutritious goodness against his skin.
"No no no," he screamed. He ripped the tendrils free, wincing. To his horror, his other foot was already anchoring itself. He turned back towards home but it was too late. As the remorseless sun saturated his leaves, his body rooted itself utterly to the spot. He squirmed and pulled but he may as well be trying to tear off his own arm - the pain of uprooting himself was so intense. He felt his toes spreading out, plunging deep into the earth as he was rooted utterly to the spot.
Nobody came down the shortcut for days... weeks... He lost track of time. His body, sensing the richness of the soil, settled in, changing, losing its mobility. His legs twisted together into a single thick truck that absorbed his withering arms. His neck stretched until the fleshy fruit of his head dangled on a long cord of plant matter. Day after day, his head hung by the side of the footpath, bobbing in the breeze at waist height. A trickle of sticky sap dribbled from his open mouth constantly, ready for pollination.
At last, he heard footsteps. He was saved! The figure blotted out the sun, and Rowan swiveled his eyes up towards... himself.
"Well well well, what do we have here," his body chuckled. They pointed a pokedex at him. "Weepinbell. The pitcher plant Pokemon," the device said in its electronic voice. "Secretes a sweet-swelling sap to attract other Pokemon. This Pokemon will travel until it finds a suitable spot to permanently set down roots."
"Even for a plant, there's not a lot of brains in that head, is there?" the weepinbell inside his body sniggered, flicking his head, which bobbed dizzyingly on its stalk, spittle spraying. She leered, cupping his fruit-shaped head to steady it. Her thumb teased his thick, pink lips, his sticky sap dribbling over her fingers.
"Weeping..." he begged. "...Weeping..."
