I'm back home in bed. It is early morning, the orange sunrise filtering through the curtains. My cat is sat on my chest, pawing at my face and whining for her food bowl to be filled. "Gerroff," I mutter and push her away.
"Jack!" My father slaps me harder on the cheek, jolting me awake. It is a moment before I recall where (and indeed what) I am. We're still on the island. What time is it? The stars were gone from the sky, obscured by an orange glow.
"Jack, I need you to give me a leg up," dad says, dragging me to my feet and over to a tall palm tree on the edge of the clearing. There are long grooves scraped in the bark at the base of it. He frowns intently at his hands, massaging the tendons of his palms and flexing his fingers until, like Wolverine, a set of sharp claws spring from the ends of his fingers. "Damn things take some getting used to. Okay, now crouch down and lace your fingers together."
I do as instructed, and he places one foot in my hands, bracing the other against the bark.
"Huh. Nice toe beans," I mutter sleepily, feeling the felinoid footpads against my palm.
"What?"
"Jellybean toes. That's what they call them. There's a subredd-"
"Does your generation spend all its time talking nonsense?" he snaps. "Shut up and push!"
I give him a shove upwards. His tigress-like form moves with a startling grace, finding clawholds in the loose bark. The patch of white fur coating his rear catches the moonlight, shimmying higher and higher.
Then a chunk of bark peels off under his foot. His claws rake down the tree bark, showering splinters. I squint my eyes against them and reach to break his fall.
Two round, warm, fuzzy cheeks fall into my upstretched hands. He gasps and clenches the ass caught in my grasp, strong young muscles shifting beneath the layer of short fur.
There is a moment of silent understanding between father and son, as we agree to never ever speak of this, before I give his ass another hard shove, propelling him back upwards. This time he makes it and perches there, silhouetted against the flickering light as he stares out over the top of the trees.
"We need to leave right now," he bellows. He scrambles back down, leaping the last metre in haste and dropping nimbly into my arms. "Wake your brother. Carry him if you have to. The whole damn forest is on fire."
