Well, ladies and gentleman, what a day it has been here at Balmoral on what we are tentatively calling the First Annual King's Run. The hounds are being wrangled back into their cages and the victor, His Majesty, is receiving some well deserved pets from the Queen Consort. What a result.

Never indeed. We'll be interviewing him just as soon as he stops panting and whimpering. Right now the Princess of Wales is coming over now to comb the twigs and dirt out of his fur, as the press are eager to get a shot of the man of the hour. A veterinarian is disinfecting those nips on his haunches, but otherwise he came off mostly unscathed.
A lot of people underestimated him but let's not forget that he knows this terrain, and used the home advantage. Once he upped his claw-game in the second half, things turned around for him, Gary. He really flipped the predator-prey dynamic on its head. If they do bring him back next year (and looking at the public response, that seems to be a foregone conclusion), they're going to have to turn him into something a little more defenceless if they want to get the better of him.

Well even if they make him a slug, I'm sure the race will be just as heartstopping as today. We're just reading through the twitter messages sent in by our viewers and, in all my time reporting for the BBC, I've never witnessed such an outpouring of support for the royal family. Here's one: "I never liked that bone idle freeloader but seeing him jiggle around like that made me reconsider some things."

Would that we could, Roger. Sadly the king will be having his cells saturated with an infusion of human DNA in the next few days before he devolves fully into a mindless animal.
