"You didn't mention there was riding involved," Barry Allen said, staring at the horses further down the beach.
Atalanta laughed. "The footrace is only one small part of the competition, little one. It is more than just a simple test of speed. It requires strength, agility and skill. You will need to be able to balance on high beams. And since you can barely go three steps without falling..." She slapped him hard on the back, sending him face-first into the sand.
Balance had been Barry's Achilles' heel since the process of amazonification - the ballast on his front and behind had thrown off his honed reflexes, and he'd garnered a reputation as a clumsy girl in the days since arriving on Themyscira. Their pitying remarks had made him determined to prove himself, especially with Batman and Superman so secluded. Someone needed to stand up for the 4 billion citizens of "Man's World".
He picked himself up and dusted himself down. "Anything else?"
"There is the pankration of course. And how are you at the javelin?"
"I'm a fast learner," he said, stomach sinking. "How about a date if I win?"
Atalanta glanced up at the palm trees on the edge. "Very well. I'll even feed it to you myself. And when I win, you will be my handmaiden."
Suddenly eager to lose, he took his place at the starting line. A crowd of amazons had gathered to watch. Atalanta unbuckled her armored shoes and set them aside, turning to her friend. "Talaria, may I borrow your sandals for this one?"
