It may not look like much, but the neural extractor is one of the most dangerous weapons any of you are likely to encounter in the field, both to yourself and the person firing it. If a perp is waving this thing around, assume they are either desperate or insane, and shoot to kill. You might be doing them a favour.
Even holding it is painful, so nobody pulls one out unless they intend to use it. When held, microneedles extend from the grip into the wielder's flesh, linking up with the nerves of the hand. When the trigger is pulled, every scrap of neural energy is immediately ripped from the shooter's body and fired as a coherent beam.
The beam travels fast, penetrating most forms of solid matter until it encounters an organic vessel, violently ejecting its neural energy, overwriting its personality with that of its assailant.
By 'organic vessel', that means you. It can also mean any civilian in the area, depending on how bad a shot the guy is. It means dogs. It means cats, cockroaches, spiders, most things larger than an ant. It can pass through buildings like it's nothing and throw your perp into a zebra in the zoo three miles away.
And if it fails to hit any of that? The beam will continue on its merry way in a perfectly straight line until the curvature of the earth sends it off into space. We've no idea how many idiots are screaming off into the void because they were dumb enough to fire one of these. I don't want to know. That's the kind of thing that keeps an officer up at night.
