A Florida man's attempt at a festive felony was foiled this week. Workers at the Orlando toy store were alerted by the repeated activation of a fire alarm within the area of the Santa's grotto, with one of the lifesized wooden dolls used as Santa's elves found to have the stub of a cigarette in its mouth. Upon closer examination, employees were shocked to discover a man hidden within the mannequin.
Review of CCTV footage showed a man, later identified as 43-year-old Peter Reynolds of no fixed abode, entering the store on Thursday. Ducking into the then-empty Santa's grotto, he can be seen pulling on a hollowed-out wooden suit, before inserting himself as part of the Santa's workshop display. There he remained for two days, moving only occasionally to light up a cigarette. The dollsuit had been assembled to imitate one of Father Christmas' elven assistants with remarkable attention to detail, complete with painted mask, red and white fur-lined dress, and a concealed internal water bladder that allowed Mr Reynolds to take sips of water.
While the motive behind Mr Reynolds' actions remains unclear, store employees suspect he had been lying in wait to steal the charitable donations gathered over the holiday season, which were due to be counted and delivered to orphanages around Orlando.
Bystanders and store employees expressed amusement at the audacious attempt, with even the store owner joking Mr Reynold may be brought back next year for his 'commitment to the role' and 'willingness to work long, late hours'. Others failed to see the funny side.
"I think it's disgusting," said a local mother. "Some of the parents like to play with the display while Santa gives out presents. My husband had that thing on his knee. Somebody needs to be held responsible for this."
Mr Reynolds now faces charges of attempted burglary, and has been taken into custody until his trial. Police have so far failed to remove the bulk of the suit, which appears bonded to his skin after prolonged usage. "He's in there pretty tight. We'll need a nutcracker to get him out," commented the deputy police chief. "Honestly it's a Christmas miracle he didn't set himself on fire with the amount of superglue he used. On the positive side, he's really spreading festive cheer to the other guys in the drunk tank."
