I'd considered myself an experienced mountaineer. As I scramble to the summit on all fours, leaping nimbly between boulders with my tail whipping out behind for balance, I realise I knew nothing. All my life I've stuck to the footpaths but in this body, agile as a cheetah, paths mean nothing. Anywhere I can see, I can reach. Even if it means scrambling up a vertical cliff face, my claws provide purchase on slippery rock.
A rock breaks beneath my paw-hand, sending me tumbling. My monkey-brain screams in panic. My cat-body reacts, twisting to position all four limbs beneath itself for a perfect landing. It barely gives me pause. Only the sloshing of my breasts slows me down.
I'd told my wife this was just a test drive. But as I stand on the mountain peak, barely breathing heavily from the ascent, feeling young blood rushing through my veins and cartilage in my knees for the first time in decades, I know I can't give this up.
The exchange-salesman is grinning broadly as I scamper down to the base of the mountain. "What did I tell you? Ain't she a beaut? Glad you picked out the outdoors model - they're tweaked for speed, these vat-grown clones. Like speedboats made flesh."
"Miaow," says my male human body dumbly, rubbing at the collar the salesman has placed on it.
"How much?" I ask.
"I know I've got a sale when I see the customer's tail swishing like that," he winks. "Assuming you're going for part exchange - and I'd be happy to take this thing off your hands..." He gestures at my senile old flesh squatting in the dirt trying to scratch itself with one foot, and sucks air through his teeth.. "... I could let you go away with it for... ohhh, $70,000?"
I shake his hand so fast that I forget to put my claws away. "Don't worry about it. Happens all the time," he says breezily, wiping off his bleeding hand as he retrieves the paperwork from his car. "Hope you don't mind signing in blood," he jokes.
And just like that, it is done. One signature and my birth-body is gone, miaowing as it is coaxed into the salesman's car. "Nice doing business with you. You have a good life now. Oh, and if your wife feels like she can't keep up with the new you, bring her down to the showroom," he grins. "We've got a few tom cat models I know you'd both love."
