“What is black and white… and tanned all over…” Dick Grayson mumbled to himself around a mouthful of creamy milkshake. The answer was obviously a cow, yet the clues seemed to have dried up here, at this milk bar out in Gotham’s boonies.
The dastardly Riddler was on the loose, and the Dynamic Duo were keeping themselves sharp, knowing his twisting puzzles were soon to come. Batman was once again putting his young ward through his paces. He’d given Dick a tricky riddle to solve and the promise of “find the solution and you’ll find me. I’ve every faith in you, Boy Wonder!” before vanishing into the night.
That had been days ago.
Dick Grayson scrutinised the milk bar patrons with a detective’s eye. With Batman’s DNA Disguise Kit, the master of disguise could be any one of them! He twirled the syringe of DNA reversion serum around his fingers and sighed.
In the farm adjoining the milk bar, a dairy cow lowed plaintively from its fenced enclosure. Its insistent moos almost seemed directed at the Boy Wonder.
The poor beast does have rather swollen udders. Perhaps that's what is causing her discomfort, Dick noted with a keen eye. Or perhaps she doesn’t like the sight of that beastly-looking bull loping across the field towards her!
In any event, he was allowing himself to become distracted, and anyway a farmer was tending to her. The gruff man lashed the unruly beast to the fence before unbuckled some dirty black rag tangling around the creature’s neck and affixing a cowbell in its place. The cow's head hung low as it was led away towards the cow shed for a much needed milking.
Robin returned to his drink and the mystery at hand, not noticing the vial of reversion serum that rolled out of the cowl stripped from the young, fertile heifer, nor hearing the crack of glass as one of the bull’s hooves pushed it into the dirt.
