The man who would come to be known as ‘Pink Panties’ was once one Martin McAllister, an avid US mountaineer, 25-years-old at the time of his accident. While navigating the summit of Everest with his fiance, Martin was tragically swept up by an avalanche and thrown 30 meters down a crevasse. Although wearing a FUNbag system that protected Martin from the fall, it was discovered that he had inadvertently equipped his fiance's device by mistake, rendering him trapped as a silicone facsimile of the 21-year-old woman. Due to compression effects of the mis-sized suit, his mobility was negligible.
Although retrieved from the crevasse, the decision was made for the party to continue onto the summit without him rather than risk further injury transporting his immobile form down from the mountain.
Later criticized for what was seen as a callous decision, his fiance responded, “He may not be much to look at now but that little body is still 200lbs. There’s no way we could have carried him. At the end of the day, we made the right decision for the group, and I know Martin would agree, god rest his soul.”
When interviewed on the matter, the trapped doll produced only a muffled series of expletives.
Like many casualties of Everest’s infamous Death Zone, Martin has remained up there ever since, considered too dangerous to recover, discarded among the empty oxygen cylinders and other detritus that now litter the mountain. Like the climber Green Boots before him, he functions as a landmark now infamously known as ‘Pink Panties’ by other climbers.
The skinsuit maintains his vitals even during the brutal winter months when Martin becomes frozen in place beneath thick ice on the summit. During the summer thaw, he is commonly chiseled out by kindly volunteers and dragged to the nearest camp where he is given a good cleaning prior to being put to use providing much needed relief to the many thousands of climbers that try for the summit each year, individuals known collectively as the ‘Five Mile High Club’.
