Fetal stem cell infusion is a minimally invasive procedure that parents-to-be often use to get an idea of how their child might look and how they might deal with parenthood. A tiny number of cells are removed from the fetus and propogated in a laboratory before infused into a recipient (typically a friend or family of the expectant mother) inducing complete reshaping of the physiology within about a week.
Sophie was eager for it, so I stepped up to the plate like a good husband. It’s been a month since I became a clone of my own unborn daughter. The reality of it really only just hit me today while out having coffee with “mom”. I’m her. I mean I’m literally 50% my wife. It’s crazy. Just a few years ago this would have seemed like magic.
It’s been an incredible experience. I feel closer to my wife in some ways than I ever did as a man. We’ve shared things I never imagined - clothes and makeup mostly(!) but emotional things too - she even opened up about her doubts about being a mom.
“You’ve nothing to be worried about. You’ve been the best mom a girl could ask for.”
“Oh, you flatterer. If she’s half as sweet as you, we won’t have any problems,“ she smiles, stroking her belly. “I feel shallow saying this but I wasn’t expecting her to be quite so pretty.”
“Definitely gets that from you.” I push a long strand of hair back behind delicate ears. “Hey, as long as I’ve got five fingers and five toes, that’s all I care about.”
The waiter delivers chocolate cake to our table. A young man - or perhaps a few years older than I appear now. His short, dark hair is the same color as my coffee... with a face almost as sweet as the dessert. I watch him go.
Sophia gives a knowing laugh. “And now I know she's likely to grow up straight.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?!” I blurt, digging into the dessert to hide my deepening blush.
