"This doesn't look much like a changing room," I muttered, staring at the surgical room to which I had been led.
"On the contrary, you're in for the change of your life. Sit here," the Doctor instructed.
Confused but not wanting to push my luck any further on my first day, I sank into the dentist-like chair.
The Doctor smiled. "Now I'm afraid when they told me we were getting a nurse Alex, I rather assumed you were a girl. Not that it makes much difference, but the uniform may be a little tight."
"I hope I'm not going to be wearing a skirt," I laughed nervously.
"Of course not. Clothing is an infection hazard. Her, breathe this." He pressed a breathing mask to my face.
"Um. I think maybe there's been some sort of mistaaaa..."
A thick white gas streamed from the mask and down my nostils. Instantly my body sagged like a marrionette puppet into the soft rubber of the seat, all strength sapped from my muscles.
"Deference to authority," he mused, evidently pleased. "Promising. You should have less trouble meshing with the programming that way. I've built drones before that tried to go against their programing. The brain damage was so severe, they were only worthy to be refurbished as roombas. After all, the mind is a terrible thing to waste."
I had no idea what he was talking about, but I was damned sure I didn't like it! Yet as desperately as i struggled I couldn't move a single muscle! Only my lungs continued to function - calmly, deeply inhaling and exhaling the paralysing white gas...
