After passing through the door, she found herself in the same playroom that they had been in earlier. Even if it didn’t feel the same...after all, the walls stretched farther, the ceiling was much higher, and everything in the room was so much bigger than earlier.
“No, not bigger,” Katy reminded herself, looking around in awe. “I’m small!”
Standing there in her cute pink dress and ribbon-print knee-highs, she couldn’t help but feel both giddy and afraid at the giant, almost foreign world around her. But amidst all the objects, was someone very familiar: her daughter, Sara, whom she saw in the distance playing with a dollhouse. The door behind Katy closed, and Sara looked up. A look of joy came to her face as she stood and came bounding over.
It was a very familiar and welcome reaction that Katy had experienced many times, but this time things were very different. As Sara approached, something seemed off; she was just so...big! Katy knew, consciously, that since she had shrunk, this change should be obvious...but to see her little girl come bounding, her depth perception telling her mind that this was a person of the same size...it was disorienting. She felt a little dizzy, but stood her ground, trying her hardest to crack a smile as her huge daughter arrived.
Sara obviously noticed the difference too, because she stopped a ways back. Her face looked concerned, and she peered curiously at the new girl who had entered the room. Slowly, she took a few steps forward...then a few more...until she was only a few paces away. Katy looked up...that’s right, up...at her daughter. She figured that she was probably only an inch or two shorter, otherwise the two girls were almost identical (except for Katy’s obvious adult proportions).
“M...Mommy?” Sara asked, cautiously, looking Katy up and down with confusion. Katy wondered what was going through her little brain right now.
“Wha...Wha happened, Mommy?”
Katy tried to remember back to the pamphlet, even though her heart was beating so quickly that she found it hard to think.
“Yes Sara! It’s me, Mommy. Mommy shrunk small! Isn’t that exciting?” Katy grinned widely and held out her arms, putting enthusiasm into her voice, hoping that the suggestions from the pamphlet were accurate.
Sara smiled and came closer immediately. She walked around her smaller mom, gasping and oo-ing as she took everything in. She even grabbed Katy’s dress at one point, giggling, “So cute Mommy! You’re so cute!”
Katy was a little taken aback by the strength the child exerted when she grabbed her, remembering back to the explanation of size and weight ratios. She slowly tugged at her dress until Sara released it, and put on a big smile.
“Wanna play with me, Sara? I like to play!”
Sara’s face lit up.
“Yea!” she yelled, grabbing Katy’s arm and tugging. Katy was almost pulled over, but managed to keep her balance as she was pulled with quite the degree of force over piles of toys as they made their way to the dollhouse. She just couldn’t get over how big everything was: there was a small riding horse that she could actually ride, alphabet blocks that would now fill her whole hand, and of course, many many dolls of varying shapes and sizes...but all larger than she was used to.
Sara let go of her and kneeled next to the dollhouse.
“Let’s play...you can be the Mommy and the kitty,” she said, handing Katy two small dolls, one of an adult woman and the other of a cat. Katy kneeled down as well, noting that she was indeed just a bit smaller than her child. It felt weird, but at the same time, she couldn’t help but feel a bit giddy.
Soon, Katy was lost in play. She was endlessly amazed at all the ideas that Sara came up with for the families that lived in the dollhouse. They often introduced new toys, sometimes fetched by Sara, and other times by Katy as she pranced about in her tiny stockinged feet. Sara had always been creative, but the way she spoke to her mother now…she added side comments like ‘The Mommy needs to go to work so everyone can have food,’ or she would explain things to her, like ‘The dog lives outside because dogs like to live outside because they can smell the moon.’ Sara had never been this talkative to Katy before, even when they played together: it truly was as if the barrier between their adult/child relationship had broken down, and her daughter was naturally treating her like just another child: an equal.
However, being as Sara was, in fact, still a child…she began to get frustrated sometimes when Katy would say something wrong, or wouldn’t put a doll in the right place, or would make a suggestion she didn’t like.
“No, the Mommy isn’t supposed to go there, that’s the sitting room...No, you’re doing it all wrong!”
Then, it happened: Katy accidentally knocked over a piece of furniture, causing a bit of a mess. Sara shouted in frustration, turned and pushed her shrunken mother. The push was much more forceful than Katy could have ever anticipated, and she felt herself fly back a good foot, landing on her back. She opened her eyes in shock as she saw the slightly taller little girl looking at her, her own eyes wide as she realized what she had just done.
Katy felt hurt and confused, her mind racing. Her initial reaction was to discipline her daughter, tell her that what she did was wrong and that she needed to say sorry. But as she looked at this child who matched her in size and outmatched her in strength, she remembered that the pamphlet had mentioned this sort of behavior specifically and how to diffuse it. There was a list of suggestions, but she could only remember the first, so she decided to try it.
Katy sat up, bringing her knees up, burying her face into them...and pretended to cry. She snuck tiny peeks from the corner of her eye as she sniffled and cried out into her knees. It took a few moments, but soon Sara put down the toy she was holding, came over and wrapped her arms around her small mother, holding her close.
“I’m sorry, Mommy...I din mean it. Peez don’t cry.”
Katy looked up a little, rubbing her eyes with her hands, slowing her sniffling.
“It’s okay,” she said. “I’m okay. Do you want to play more?”
Sara happily returned to the dollhouse. Katy stood to join her when a shadow loomed over her. She turned around and was met by a button down blouse and the lab coat of Dr. Davis. Katy’s vision slowly traveled upwards for what seemed like forever until she finally made eye contact with the gigantic woman who was peering down at her. She felt dizzy again, and this time she fell back onto her tush.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, Ms. Smalls,” Dr. Davis said, her voice much louder than Katy remembered it being. “I know that this must seem a shock to you, but you were adapting so well, that I didn’t do my usual slow approach,” she explained.
Katy stood up, rubbing her bottom. She felt the ruffles of her little skirt, and suddenly felt embarrassed standing before this huge woman. She could feel heat rising in her cheeks and was pretty sure she was blushing.
“It’s okay,” she responded in her high-pitched voice, now feeling even more self-conscious.
“Your twenty minutes are up,” the Doctor continued, “If you’ll follow me, we’ll get you out of those clothes and restore your height.”
Katy looked around at the huge room and all the her-sized toys. She suddenly felt a feeling of longing...like she didn’t want to leave. She was just getting used to her height and she had been having a really good time.
“You enjoyed it, didn’t you?” the Doctor added, a grin on her face. “I could tell…not everyone adapts as quickly as you. It’s almost like you were born to be small,” she said with a chuckle.
Katy felt even more fierce burning in her cheeks.
“I...I’m ready,” she said softly, not daring to stare the giantess in the eye.
“Follow me then. Oh,” she added, kneeling down to Katy in the way an adult would to a child.
“You did a really good job diffusing the pushing incident earlier. It was a textbook situation. You have a knack for this.”
She led Katy back to the first room, where she gave her a second injection. “That will counteract the previous drug and restore any lost height. You would grow back eventually, even without it, but it would be a much slower process.”
Then she guided Katy back to the changing room and left her there. Katy started to remove her old clothes, but not before taking one more good look in the mirror. She admired herself, how cute and small she looked...and already knew she would be returning again.
She felt her clothes beginning to tighten, so she quickly removed them, trudging over to the table which held her adult sized clothing. The regrowth process was quicker than the shrinking, and soon she was changed and standing back in the exam room again with the Doctor.
Doctor Davis smiled when Katy re-entered the room and preemptively answered the question before Katy could even pose it.
“We’re booked this week, but I have plenty of openings next week.”
With a smile, she opened the company calendar on her screen before turning back to Katy.
“What works best for you?”
