The mall was crowded with weekend shoppers, echoing with laughter, music, and the scent of pretzels and perfume. Toby and Megan strolled beside Megan’s older sister, Cassie, who had barely said a word since they arrived. She kept her eyes low, her smile faint, her arms wrapped tightly around her chest like she was holding on to something that wasn’t there.

Cassie had lost her twin babies just a few months ago. A tragic miscarriage had stolen her dreams of motherhood before they ever got the chance to bloom. Megan, heartbroken for her sister, had invited her out, hoping that the mall, the noise, and a bit of retail therapy might lift her spirits.

But nothing seemed to help.

As they passed a store filled with pastel onesies, tiny shoes, and soft plush toys, Cassie paused. Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears as she stared into the window, her reflection ghosted by the image of what could have been.

Megan held Toby’s hand tightly. “I just wish… she could be a mom,” she whispered to him, her voice shaking. “She would’ve been amazing at it.”

Toby nodded. “Yeah, she would’ve.”

There was a strange, electric hum in the air as Megan closed her eyes. Deep inside, something primal and desperate stirred—a wish, pure and selfless, sent out like a flare to the universe.

She had no way of knowing that something heard it.

The shift was instant.

Reality twisted.

Pain bloomed in Megan’s chest and spine as her limbs shrank, her bones cracked and softened, and her thoughts scattered into innocent confusion. She tried to scream, but it came out as a tiny, garbled wail.

Beside her, Toby was undergoing the same horrifying fate. His height dropped rapidly, eyes wide in panic until awareness faded. His clothes vanished, replaced by a pale-pink onesie with a name stitched on the chest: Bella.

Megan—no, Jenna now—was bundled in matching lavender. Her mind was quickly unraveling, memories fading like chalk in the rain. Within seconds, she no longer remembered being a girl named Megan, or that the man next to her had once been her boyfriend. She only knew warmth, the softness of a blanket, the scent of powder, and the comforting sound of a familiar heartbeat close by.

Cassie blinked.

She was standing in front of the baby store, holding the handles of a double stroller.

Inside were her beautiful baby girls—Bella and Jenna. Her daughters. Her miracles.

She smiled brightly for the first time in months. “Mommy’s gonna spoil you both today,” she cooed lovingly, kneeling down to brush a stray hair from Jenna’s forehead. The infant gurgled and kicked, eyes wide and unknowing.

To everyone else in the mall, Cassie had always been a single mom blessed with twin girls. There was no Megan. No Toby. No tragic miscarriage. No sorrow.

Reality had rewritten itself to make room for this new life—where a wish had been answered at the cost of two lives.

Cassie strolled through the mall, chatting with her girls, picking out soft blankets and teething toys, never once suspecting the strange trade that had been made. And why would she?

In her world, she already had everything she ever wanted.
