Zoey sat slouched in the break room, sipping on a lukewarm cup of vending machine coffee. Her heels were kicked off under the table, and her blazer was tossed lazily on the chair beside her. The clock ticked with agonizing slowness, mocking her with every passing second of her fifteen-minute break.

It had been six months since she graduated college—top of her class, full of ambition, and ready to tackle the corporate world. And where did all that drive land her? As an intern. Not even a paid one.

Her days were filled with making copies, organizing spreadsheets she never got credit for, and fetching overpriced lattes for her supervisor, who always seemed too busy to remember her name.

She took another sip and let out a sigh. “Ugh. I swear, I didn’t spend four years and fifty grand just to be a glorified assistant,” she muttered to herself. Then, putting on an exaggerated voice like she was on stage, she chuckled sarcastically, “Oh, I wish I had a real position in this company. Something exciting. Something different.”

She rolled her eyes and shook her head, still smirking at her own performance. “Yeah right, like that’s ever gonna happen.”

The break room was silent except for the low hum of the fridge and the faint buzz of fluorescent lights. She didn’t notice the flicker in the air behind her. Not yet.
