Abandon Lab

Hailey, a rookie reporter with a burning ambition to uncover the truth, arrived at the shady laboratory late at night. Her heart pounded as she walked through the dimly lit corridors, the faint hum of machinery echoing around her. She clutched her recorder tightly, feeling a mix of apprehension and determination. The air felt heavy, and a strange metallic tang lingered in her nostrils, but she pressed on, determined to expose whatever illicit activities were taking place here.

As she carefully sifted through scattered documents and glowing monitors, Hailey felt a sudden hiss behind her. Before she could react, a blast of strange greenish gas engulfed her. She coughed violently, her vision swimming as the world began to tilt and blur. Her legs grew weak, and she stumbled to the ground. The last thing she saw before her eyes fluttered shut was the shadowy outline of figures in lab coats approaching her.

When Hailey regained consciousness, she felt... wrong. Her body felt unnaturally heavy, and when she tried to move her arms, they responded with an eerie mechanical precision. Panic surged through her as she glanced down—and froze in horror. Her once-familiar human limbs had been replaced with sleek, metallic appendages. Her arms, now gleaming silver with intricate joints and wires, whirred softly as she moved them. Her hands were no longer soft and warm; they were cold, metallic constructs with articulated fingers.

Her heart—or what should have been her heart—began to race, but instead, she heard a faint mechanical hum emanating from her chest. With trembling fingers, she reached up to touch her face and felt a mix of cold steel and smooth synthetic skin. She scrambled to find a reflective surface, and when she did, her stomach—if she still had one—dropped.

The reflection staring back at her was barely recognizable. Her eyes, wide with terror, were still human, but they were now set in a partially robotic face. One side of her face was covered in metallic plating, with glowing circuits running along its edges, while the other side retained a ghostly remnant of her former humanity. Her hair was gone, replaced by a smooth, metallic dome with faint lights pulsing in rhythmic patterns.

Looking down at her body, Hailey realized that the transformation was total. Her torso, legs, and even her neck were entirely mechanical, a seamless fusion of steel, wires, and advanced robotics. She could see panels and access ports where her skin once was. Any trace of softness, warmth, or humanity had been stripped away.

Desperate for answers, she stumbled forward, her new metal feet clanking against the cold floor. That’s when she noticed a monitor flicker to life. A video began to play, showing the laboratory's scientists casually discussing their "project."

“We’ve done it again,” one of them said with a smirk. “This one fetched a great price. All her organs, limbs, and tissues have already been sold on the black market. The robotics division did a fine job reconstructing her.”

Hailey’s breath—or what passed for it now—caught in her throat. They had sold her. They had stolen her body, her humanity, and left her as this... thing. A machine. A product. The only parts of her that remained human were her eyes, part of her face, and her brain, now encased in a metallic shell. Everything else was gone.

Her mind raced with questions, but the one that rang the loudest was also the most horrifying: What do I do now?
