Julie Sue Base

Julie Sue sat in the middle of her backyard, legs crossed on the soft blanket she'd laid out hours earlier. The air was cool but gentle, brushing her skin like whispers from the night itself. Above her, the sky stretched endlessly, dark and speckled with pinpricks of light. Stars shimmered like tiny, distant diamonds, while the crescent moon hung low, casting a silver glow across the world.

She let out a soft sigh, her chest rising and falling as the sound of crickets surrounded her. Her eyes traced the constellations she could recognize—the Big Dipper, Orion’s Belt—though tonight, they felt faint compared to the ones she couldn’t name.

What’s out there? Julie thought, her lips curving into the smallest smile. She wasn’t sure if she was looking for answers or just enjoying the question itself. Her mind wandered as it always did on nights like this. It was one of the few times she felt truly at peace. No noise, no distractions, just the vast unknown above her, reminding her how small she really was.

Lying back on the blanket, Julie folded her arms behind her head and stared even deeper into the stars. “Maybe I’m looking for something,” she murmured to herself, her voice barely above a whisper. She couldn’t say exactly what that was. An escape? A new adventure? Something to make her life feel… bigger?

The thought lingered as she gazed at a particularly bright star. For a moment, it seemed to twinkle more vividly, almost as if it were winking back at her.

Julie Sue’s breath caught in her chest as a streak of light cut across the sky, fast and fleeting. A shooting star. Her eyes widened with awe, and for a moment, she forgot how to breathe. It was brighter than she’d ever imagined one could be, glowing with a soft, almost golden hue that contrasted beautifully against the deep navy of the night.

Her lips parted as she followed its arc, watching until it began to fade, its tail vanishing like the last note of a perfect melody. “Wow,” she whispered, the word escaping her in a breathless tone. She felt like a child again, experiencing magic for the very first time.

It lingered in her mind, the memory of that streak of light burning brightly even after it disappeared. Her heart raced with a mixture of excitement and disbelief. That really just happened. I just saw a shooting star.

Julie sat up straighter, her gaze still fixed on the spot where the star had been. She had always heard that shooting stars carried a special kind of magic, that they granted wishes if you made them fast enough. A little part of her, the part that still believed in fairy tales and endless possibilities, stirred to life.

“A wish…” she murmured to herself, her voice soft as the thought took shape. Her fingers fidgeted with the edge of the blanket beneath her as she stared at the now-empty patch of sky. If I could wish for anything… what would it be?

The world around her seemed to quiet as Julie considered the question. She didn’t rush to answer. Instead, she let herself bask in the stillness, her mind turning over the endless possibilities. For now, it wasn’t about making the wish—just the wonder of knowing she could.
