The Anchovy

Fred had always been the curious type. His fascination with his friend Jessica's extensive collection of obscure videos and tapes was no secret. On a particularly quiet afternoon, curiosity got the better of him. He knew she wouldn’t be home for hours, so he decided to sneak into her house and indulge his temptation. The neatly organized rows of DVDs, old VHS tapes, and even some rare burned CDs seemed to call to him. As he scanned the shelves, his eyes settled on an unmarked case with a hand-scrawled label that read: "SpongeChovy".

"Weird," Fred muttered. "I’ve never heard of this episode before." His fingers itched with intrigue as he pulled the case free and popped the disc into Jessica’s computer.

The screen flickered to life with the familiar underwater pineapple intro, but something about it felt… off. The colors were a bit duller, the music slower, almost warped. Spongebob’s laugh echoed eerily as a school of anchovies filled the Krusty Krab, chanting in unison, "Meep meep meep." The scene stretched far too long, the camera zooming into the glassy eyes of one of the anchovies until it felt like Fred himself was staring into a mirror.

A sudden warmth flooded Fred's body. He blinked and felt his vision blur. His arms felt oddly stiff, his fingers tingling as if they were asleep. He tried to move, but his limbs jerked awkwardly. Panic surged through him, but the strange warmth intensified, becoming a soothing wave of euphoria.

"What… what’s happening?" he whispered, his voice already sounding strange. He clutched his throat in alarm, feeling his vocal cords shift. His voice became flat, monotone, a perfect mimic of the anchovy chant: "Meep… meep… meep…"

Fred's skin began to ripple, the human texture smoothing out into a slick, rubbery surface. His arms thinned, shortening into narrow fins that twitched uncontrollably. His nails dissolved, replaced by a seamless extension of his transforming body. His feet cramped painfully, his toes merging together into flippers as he kicked helplessly at the floor.

He gasped as his face pushed forward, his nose shrinking into a nub while his mouth stretched unnaturally wide. His lips flattened, hardening into a thin line as his teeth disappeared altogether. His eyes grew larger, rounder, and glassy, fixed in an expression of eternal blankness.

"Meep… meep…" The sound came involuntarily now, his mind a swirling mix of bliss and fading human thoughts. His neck narrowed, his shoulders shrinking into his torso until his entire body was a tapered oval. The last remnants of his human self faded as a thin, ridged fin sprouted from the top of his head, trailing down his back.

The transformation complete, Fred flopped awkwardly onto the floor. His new form, a perfect anchovy, twitched and meeped with mindless contentment.

It was then that Jessica returned home. She barely stepped through the door before her eyes widened at the sight of Fred’s discarded clothes on the floor and the strange, flopping fish-like creature skittering about the room.

"Fred? What the heck are you doing here?" she demanded, stepping closer. Her eyes darted to the computer, where the cursed episode still played, Spongebob's warped laugh echoing.

Before she could react, Fred-anchovy launched himself at her feet, his slick body twisting with surprising strength. His glassy eyes stared up at her as he emitted a frantic series of "meep" sounds. Confused, Jessica stumbled backward, but it was too late. Fred flopped toward the desk, nudging the mouse with his fin. The screen brightened as the video rewound itself and began again.

"No!" Jessica screamed as she was forced to look. The warped colors, the endless anchovy chant… her mind spun as warmth surged through her limbs. She gasped as her skin grew slick, her fingers and toes merging into fins. Her voice flattened, joining the chorus of "Meep… meep… meep…" as her humanity dissolved.

Her hair slithered away, her eyes enlarging into round, lifeless circles. She shrank into herself, her curves flattening into the sleek, oval body of another anchovy. The last thought she had before the transformation took her completely was a fleeting, irresistible hunger for krabby patties.

The two anchovies flopped in mindless harmony, their glassy eyes fixed on the glowing screen. The episode looped endlessly, its hypnotic power waiting for its next viewer.
